An ultra-wideband, compact planar antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) has been presented in this article for future 5G millimeter-wave applications. The proposed antenna overcomes the limitation of bandwidth of the conventional microstrip patch antenna (typically < 5%). The antenna exhibits an ultra-wideband characteristic covering frequency band from 21.3 GHz to 40.6 GHz which makes the fractional bandwidth of 62.36%. The antenna performance is enhanced by etching slots on the patch and incorporating defect on the ground plane. The antenna achieves gain greater than 4.01 dBi and radiation efficiency greater than 95% throughout the operating band. In the given band it also exhibits very low cross-polarization level as well as stable radiation performance. This antenna is designed to operate in n257, n258, n260 and n261 5G millimeter-wave spectrum.

A dual-polarization substrate-integrated Fabry-Pérot cavity (SI-FPC) antenna is presented in this paper. The patch embedded in SI-FPC is excited with a near-field coupled feeding structure for V-polarization and with a slot-coupled feeding structure for H-polarization. The feeding structures are separated by a ground plane to improve the isolation between the ports. As a design example, an antenna operating at 10.0 GHz is fabricated and measured. A high degree of port isolation (<−40 dB) over the whole operating bandwidth (9.5–10.2 GHz) and good cross-polarization level (>25 dB) can be achieved.

This paper presents a compact, bouquet-inspired, four-element MIMO array for super wideband (SWB) applications. The proposed unit element monopole antenna has compact geometry, and it is deployed by the fusion of an elliptical and circular-shaped radiator. The convoluted geometry and semi-elliptical ground plane, along with the narrow rectangular slit defected ground structure, provides a wide impedance bandwidth. The designed unit cell has the dimensions of 32 mm × 20 mm × 0.8 mm, operates from 2.9 to 30 GHz (S11 ≤ −10 dB) and provides a bandwidth dimension ratio (BDR) of 2894. The proposed low-profile diversity array without any decoupling structures consists of four orthogonally placed, uncorrelated antennas with an inter element spacing of 0.05 λ0, occupies an area of 57 mm × 57 mm and provides dual polarization. The performance metrics of the diversity array were validated for frequencies over ultra-wideband, using mutual coupling characteristics, envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) by far-field radiation, diversity gain (DG), total active reflection coefficient (TARC), channel capacity loss (CCL) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) analysis. The measured mutual coupling over the operating band was less than −18 dB, the ECC was less than 0.004 and the TARC was less than −15 dB, and a better CCL of ˂0.28 bits/s/Hz was achieved by the fabricated antenna.

In this paper, triple-band stacked microstrip patch antennas (MPAs) are presented with wide impedance bandwidth and suppressed cross-polarization level. Triangular and circular shaped slots are embedded in the patch of antenna. Slot-loaded microstrip patches are fed with meandered microstrip line supported by a semi-ground plane structure. Triangular shaped slot-loaded MPA shows triple resonance at frequencies 2.2, 4.45, and 5.3 GHz having bandwidth of 45.9, 19.23, and 15.67%, respectively. Circular shaped slot-loaded MPA also shows triple resonance at frequencies 2.2, 4.42, and 5.38 GHz having bandwidth of 50.24, 33.21, and 13.43%, respectively. Using circular slot in place of triangular; bandwidth of the first and the second band is improved by 4.34 and 13.98%, respectively. Both the proposed antennas show an omnidirectional radiation pattern at all three resonance frequencies in the xz-plane with almost 0 dBi gain. Both the proposed antennas are fabricated on a FR-4 epoxy substrate and show a minimum level of cross-polarization radiations.

Slots or defects integrated on the ground plane of microwave planar circuits are referred to as Defected Ground Structure. DGS is adopted as an emerging technique for improving the various parameters of microwave circuits, that is, narrow bandwidth, cross-polarization, low gain, and so forth. This paper presents an introduction and evolution of DGS and how DGS is different from former technologies: PBG and EBG. A basic concept behind the DGS technology and several theoretical techniques for analysing the Defected Ground Structure are discussed. Several applications of DGS in the field of filters, planar waveguides, amplifiers, and antennas are presented.

Abstract A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) square and circular slot ground plane planar antenna with a modified circular patch for UWB communication is presented. This antenna has a low reflection coefficient and high gain in the range of 8.94 GHz, starting from 2.85 to 11.79 GHz. The proposed antenna demonstrates UWB behavior with electrically small dimensions of 0.18 λ0×0.14 λ0×0.015 λ0 (λ0 is the free-space wavelength at 2.85 GHz). The fractional bandwidth of the antenna is 122.1%, with stable radiations. The antenna's maximum gain stands at 2.79 dBi, and the antenna's peak efficiency stands at 72%, respectively. It is lightweight, compact, and easy to manufacture. Hence, it can be used for the complete range of UWB applications and covers Wi-Max/WLAN/ X-Band and Ku-Band.

A miniaturized high-gain (MHG) ultra-wideband (UWB) unidirectional monopole antenna with defected ground structure (DGS) is designed for ultra-wideband applications. The MHG antenna is printed on the FR4 substrate material with an overall size of 26.6-mm [Formula: see text] 29.3-mm [Formula: see text] 1.6-mm, which operates over the UWB frequency range and achieves the bandwidth between 3.1[Formula: see text]GHz and 10.6[Formula: see text]GHz. This high-gain unidirectional antenna exhibits a peak gain of 7.20[Formula: see text]dB with an efficiency of 95%. The compact antenna is a simple overlay design of circular and rectangular patches with the partial ground plane exhibiting high gain and better directivity. The overlay patch antenna acts as the radiator for wider bandwidth compared to the fundamental design of patch antenna and is matched to an SMA connector via 50[Formula: see text][Formula: see text] microstrip feed line. These simulated results are presented using HFSS software package. The designed antennas are fabricated and validated by using Agilent Vector Analyzer.
