For more than thirty years the mathematics education programs of the United States have been the subject of proposals for change. Such efforts as those of the School Mathematics Study Group (SMSG), the University of Illinois Committee on School Mathematics (UICSM), and the Madison Project were well intentioned but fell short of attaining the anticipated reform.

This expensive little book, originally a thesis for the University of Illinois, is an artless but sometimes perceptive account of certain library endeavours in British East and West Africa, based on archival and library research in Britain and the United States. It is not a history of libraries per se so much as a study of instances of external aid to the development of libraries beyond the sphere of teaching institutions. In the 1930s, one such source – as in so much of the English-speaking world – was the Carnegie Corporation. Grants to Kenya underpinned a system of circulating libraries, the depot for which was housed in the McMillan Memorial Library, Nairobi; membership was confined to whites until 1958. In Lagos, Alan Burns, as chief secretary, secured a grant to start an unsegregated but fee-charging library: in 1934 just 43 of its 481 members were African. The grant ended in 1935, but the library was still going forty years later.

Since the 1960s, film theory has undergone rapid development as an academic discipline—to such an extent that students new to the subject are quickly overwhelmed by the extensive and complex research published under its rubric. “Film Theory in the United States and Europe” presents a broad overview of guides to and anthologies of film theory, followed by a longer section that presents an historical account of film theory’s development—from classical film theory of the 1930s–1950s (focused around film as an art), the modern (or contemporary) film theory of the 1960s–1970s (premised on semiotics, Marxism, feminism, and psychoanalysis), to current developments, including the New Lacanians and cognitive film theory. The second section ends with a very brief overview of film and/as philosophy. The article covers the key figures and fundamental concepts that have contributed to film theory as an autonomous discipline within the university. These concepts include ontology of film, realism/the reality effect, formalism, adaptation, signification, voyeurism, patriarchy, ideology, mainstream cinema, the avant-garde, suture, the cinematic apparatus, auteur-structuralism, the imaginary, the symbolic, the real, film and emotion, and embodied cognition.

The Great Sphinx in Egypt is about 73.2 m (240 ft.) long, including the paws, which are each 15.3 m (50 ft.) long. Would one of its paws fit in a typical classroom? Would it fit in the school hallway? If the 90 800 kg (200 000 lbs.) of copper sheeting that make up the Statue of Liberty were melted down into pennies, how many pennies could be produced? How high would the pennies stand if they were stacked on one another? In which city and state would you find the world's largest ball of twine? Where would you find the world's largest catsup bottle? Such questions were the focus of the World's Largest Math Event 4— Landmarks: Seeing the World by Numbers— in April 1998. All over the United States and throughout the world, tens of thousands of students, from kindergarten through college, participated in the event. With the emphasis that the NCTM's Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) places on having students use real-world phenomena as a context for the study of mathematics, the World's Largest Math Event is a popular program.

There is by this time quite a literature on the war economy. With the one exception of the recent symposium by Professor Steiner and his associates, most of whom are connected with the University of Indiana, all of the longer treatises on the subject discuss the war economy in abstract terms or on the basis of the experience of the First World War. These treatises served a useful purpose and were the only books on the economies of war which could be written at the time; but they now seem unreal, because this war differs so greatly from the prior struggle. The University of Indiana book, dealing as it does with concrete problems of present war, is up-to-the-minute and excellently done in all respects. It does not attempt, however, to do what I am venturing: a brief, overall picture of what the war has been doing to the United States.

In Publications of the School Mathematics Study Group, an angle is defined as the union of two noncollinear rays having the same origin. This definition is now widely used in the United States, and has found its way into many contemporary textbooks.

A new classification system is introduced this year in the annual listing of graduate theses on mission and related subjects. The genera] listing is by author, alphabetically, with each thesis assigned a serial number. The subject index then classifies each thesis, identifying its relation to one or more subjects, by use of its serial number and short title. This year 25 theses from countries other than the United States are reported. Reader cooperation in expanding the list in December 1968 is sought. As a matter of policy, B. D. and M. R. E. theses are not included. A few titles represent theses accepted prior to the 1966-67 academic year, about which information had not been received when the December 1966 issue went to press. Any inquiry should be addressed to the school where the thesis was submitted, not to the Missionary Research Library nor the Editorial Office. If the dissertation has been microfilmed, orders may be sent to the University Films, 313 North First Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103.
