Field Efficacy, Net Profit and Cost Benefit Ratio of Certain Insecticides against Fruit Borer,Helicoverpa armigera(Hubner) in Tomato

To determine Incremental Cost-Benefit Ratio (ICBR) of certain bio-pesticides and insecticide against 2nd larval instar of Helicoverpa armigera in chickpea, an experiment was conducted during winter 2011. Certain pesticides as sole treatments were tested with standard, low and high doses and in treatment combinations with one half of standard doses of two respective pesticides only once at 50% flowering and podding stage of the crop. Upon crop maturity; total grain yield, additional yield, increased income and net income were obtained for each respective treatment to determine its ICBR. Overall, the treatment combination of ½ Btk + ½ Azadirachtin had the highest ICBR of 1:27.57. The lowest ICBR of 1:5.25 was obtained with Azadirachtin-0.05 %, when other treatments had ICBR from 1:8.51 to 1:23.28.

Field efficacy of seven geographical isolates of Helicoverpa armigera nucleopolyhedrovirus (HaNPV) along with an insecticide control was evaluated against H. armigera on cotton and chickpea in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, India. Among the HaNPV isolates, CBE I (Coimbatore) and NEG (Negamum) applied at 3.0 &times; 10<sup>12</sup> POB/ha to cotton and 1.5 &times; 10<sup>12</sup> POB/ha to chickpea with an adjuvant, crude sugar, significantly reduced the H. armigera larval population and increased the yield. CBE I and NEG recorded the highest yield of 2038 kg/ha and 2033 kg/ha, which was on a par with endosulfan (2026.7 kg/ha) with cost/benefit ratios of 1:2.32, 1:2.48, and 1:1.12, respectively, on cotton. In chickpea grain yields of 980, 983, and 973.3 kg/ha and cost/benefit ratios of 1:1.36, 1:1.48 and 1:0.87, respectively, in CBE I, NEG and endosulfan treated plots were obtained. The isolate RAJ (Rajasthan) recorded the lowest yield comparable to that of the untreated control in both crops.

The present investigation was undertaken to find out the effective and economical control measures for the management of foliage feeding wheat aphids, for which three insecticides viz quinalphos 25 EC, thiamethoxam 25 % WG, and spinosad 45 EC were evaluated. Minimum aphid population was observed in case of quinalphos 25 EC @1600 ml/ha and was found at par with spinosad 45 EC @125 ml/ha and was found significantly better than other treatments, viz. quinalphos @1200 ml/ha and thiamethoxam 25 % WG @ 100 gm/ha including untreated check after 7 days of treatment. However, quinalphos 25 EC @1600 ml/ha and spinosad 45 EC @125 ml/ha and significantly better than other treatments including untreated check. Grain yield of plot treated with quinalphos 25 EC @1600 ml/ha was registered with highest yield (39.25 q/ha) and significantly better than other treatments including control. Cost-benefit ratio and net profit calculated for different insecticidal treatments revealed that quinalphos 25 EC @1600 ml/ha (1:9.65) was found highly cost effective as compare to other insecticides.

Helicoverpa armigera (H&uuml;bner) is a major pest of several crops, e.g., Tomato, cotton, pigeon pea, and chickpea suffered by this insect in various parts of the worldwide. Trichocards as parasitoids regarding the different release levels of Trichogramma chilonis were used to evaluate the effectiveness against tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera as well as five insecticides with new chemistries were used to find out the comparative bio efficacy, which were relatively safer to human and environment, i.e., Capital plus (Beta-Cyfluthrin + Triazophos, 41.7% EC) 500 ml/Acre, Commando (Acephate, 97% DF) 62 g, Border (Profenofos + Lambda &ndash; Cyhalothrin, 61.5% EC) 500 ml/Acre, Polytrin C (Cypermethrin + Profenofos, 440 EC) 500 ml/Acre, Profit (Emamectin Benzoate, 1.9% EC &amp; 90% Tech.) 500 ml/Acre. We also compared the insecticides with trichocards. There were 3 treatments, T1 Profit (Emamectin Benzoate, 1.9% EC &amp; 90% Tech.) 500 ml/Acre, T2 (16000) of biological control agent (egg Parasitoid) and T3 (control plot). 16000 eggs of the parasitoid Trichogram chilonis, released per hectare were most effective in controlling tomato fruit borer. Out of the five insecticides tested, Border proved to be the best one, followed by Profit and Capital Plus in reducing the percent infestation of tomato by tomato fruit borer. In the third experiment, Profit gave best result followed by the Trichograma. chilonis cards with 16000 eggs per hectare. Among the tested insecticides, treatments sprayed with Border gave maximum yield (6179.0 kg/ha), followed by Profit &amp; Polytrin C. Cost benefit ratio shows that highest net return (46.45 BCR) was obtained with Trichograma chilonis cards released plots followed by Profit. Trichocards are suggested for the controlling of Helicoverpa armigera as best substitute for insecticides. The use of trichocards practice have very effective role to protect the soil moreover, this practice may have significant role to protect the soil and save the natural resources from insecticides pollution.
