Background: Breast cancer is the common malignant lesion in women. Fine needle aspiration cytology has high sensitivity and specificity and is a simple, rapid and safe method to diagnose breast lesions. The aim of the study was to categorize breast lesions and correlate the Fine needle aspiration cytology diagnosis with histopatholoical findings. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective study done in department of Pathology of Institute of medicine, Trivuwan university teaching hospital, from January 2007 to December 2010. There were 1403 FNAC cases and 469 histopathology cases. Fine needle aspiration correlation with histopathology was done in 249 cases. All the cases were categorized according to risk for cancers: Unsatisfactory sample, Inflammatory breast disease Benign proliferative breast disease without atypia, Benign proliferative breast disease with atypia, Suspicious for malignancy and Malignant lesions. Results: Benign breast lesions were common in the age group of 21-30 years and malignant breast lesion common in the age of 41-50 years of age. In our study fibroadenoma was most common benign lesion and ductal carcinoma was the most common malignant lesion. The sensitivity and specificity of FNAC for malignancy were found to be 98.2% and 98.5% respectively. Conclusion: Fine needle aspiration cytology is highly sensitive and specific technique for diagnosis of most of the malignant and benign breast lesions. Objective: To evaluate the role of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology in the preoperative diagnosis of malignancy in parotid and submandibular gland neoplasm. Methods: This cross sectional study on 50 cases was conducted in the Department of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital from January’2009 to June 2010. Results: Fine needle aspiration cytology findings of our all 50 cases were compared with postoperative histopathological reports. Out of the 50 cases, in 36(72%) cases of benign neoplasm and 7(14%) cases of malignant neoplasm, pre-operative FNAC findings and post operative histopathological findings were same. In 7 cases, FNAC and post operative histopathological findings did not matched. These were 2 (4%) false positive and 5 (10%) false negative result.In our study sensitivity of FNAC for reporting malignancy was 58.33%, specificity to rule out malignancy was 94.73% and overall accuracy in detecting malignant tumour was 86%. Positive predictive value and negative value were 77.77% and 87.80% respectively. It can be concluded that fine needle aspiration cytology is a safe, cheap and useful preoperative diagnostic tool in the diagnosis of malignancy in parotid and submandibular gland, but as fine needle aspiration cytology partly depends on operator skill, it may give false negative and false positive result. Conclusion: FNAC is a useful preoperative diagnostic tool for malignant parotid and submandibular glands with high specificity and sensitivity. The National Public Health Program has established the organized mammography screening in Hungary. The aim of this study was to conduct an audit of “gray zone” smears of the organized mammography screening in comparison with histopathological diagnoses. Methods: Cytology results were rated to C3 atypia probably benign and C4 suspicious of malignancy. Results: 1361 women had aspiration cytology performed from a total of 47,718 mammography non-negative lesions. 105 (7.8%) were diagnosed as C3, whereas 78 (5.7) as C4. Of the 105 patients with C3 diagnosis 61 (58%) patients underwent surgical biopsy. Histology proved malignancy in 20 (32.8%) cases, and benign lesion in 41 (67.2%) cases. All (100%) of the 78 patients with C4 diagnosis had open biopsies; 69 (88.4%) cases were histologically malignant and 9 (11.6%) cases were benign lesions. Conclusion: The auditing results of fine needle aspiration cytology of “gray zone” in organized mammography screening meet the proposed threshold values.
