Whether on oddly-shaped pillows, shrieking dolls, or basic coffee mugs, the emaciated protagonist with a gaping mouth and the swirling landscape of Edvard Munch's <em>The Scream </em>is one of today's most widespread images. Though Munch died just as abstract expressionism was being born, his emphasis on the highly personal and the unconscious through abstraction, brushwork, and intensely evocative colors link him closely to this important American art movement. Through the specific comparison of the oeuvre of Munch and the abstract expressionist Willem de Kooning, this essay will examine how and why the Norwegian painter became known as the "father of expressionism" in the history of art. <em>The Scream</em> is not central to this discussion, but instead will be looked at in conjunction with other early paintings and prints, such as <em>The Sick Child</em> and <em>The Kiss. </em>These works and others reveal Munch's artistics philosophy and technique and allow us to draw broader connections to future movements, neo-dadaism and expressionism among them.

Willem de Kooning (1904–1997) and Jackson Pollock (1912–1956) are perhaps the best-known members of the abstract expressionist movement, a group of diverse artists from disparate backgrounds who radically transformed American art during the 1940s and into the 1950s. While the development and legacy of abstract expressionism remains a subject of considerable debate, what this diverse group of artists had in common was the belief that the materials, and the ways the artists applied them, are crucial to the expression of their art.

Focusing on a series of exhibitions of modern art from the 1950s to the early 1970s, this article traces the frictions between two related, yet separate endeavors during the first postwar decades: on the one hand, the historicizing of modernism as a specifically European story; and on the other, the constitution of an all-encompassing concept of “World Art” that would integrate all periods and cultures into a single narrative. The strategies devised by exhibition organizers, analyzed here, sought to maintain the distance between World Art and modernism, and thus deferred the possibility of a more geographically expansive view of twentieth-century art. Realist art from the Soviet bloc and elsewhere occupied an uneasy position in such articulations between World Art and modernism, and its inclusion in exhibitions of modern art often led to the destabilizing of their narratives. Such approaches are contrasted here with the prominent place given to both realism and non-Euro-American art from the twentieth century in the Soviet Universal History of Art, published from 1956 to 1965. Against the context of current efforts at a “global” perspective on modern art, this article foregrounds the instances when the inner contradictions of late modernism's universalist claims were first exposed.

A leading post-World War II artist, Willem de Kooning painted in the vigorous style known as ‘‘gestural abstraction’’ or ‘‘action painting,’’ one of the two divisions of Abstract Expressionism. The artists associated with this Abstract Expressionism—Jackson Pollock, Franz Kline, and Robert Motherwell, among others—emphasized the act of painting and used pronounced, often energetic, brushstrokes to convey expression. A preeminent figure of Abstract Expressionism, de Kooning occupied a distinct place within a group that rejected any critical labels. In 1955, de Kooning declared ‘‘Words and labels are very confusing. We need definitions. I’m not an Abstract Expressionist, but I express myself.’’ Although he experimented with various degrees of abstraction and epitomized the bold, improvisational brushstroke of Action Painting, de Kooning created a style that remained unique within the movement, with a deep commitment to the body and the human figure. Blending expressionist, cubist, and surrealist elements with technical skill, his paintings explored the ambiguous relations between figure and ground, abstraction and representation, and abstract versus overt figuration.

The artwork of Raphael Montañez Ortiz (b. 1934) represents the broad sweep of new art forms since the 1950s, their imbrication with concurrent intellectual and social movements, and the productive tension between object-based and performance-based art. Starting out as an Abstract Expressionist painter in the late 1950s, Ortiz proceeded to participate in the development of several new modes: recycled film and music, mixed-media sculpture, installation, performance art, guerrilla theater, piano destruction concerts, and computer art. Yet despite his presence and impact, he remains missing from art history. This essay argues that Ortiz’s earliest destructions—recycled films made in 1957 and 1958—challenge the accepted history of US avant-garde film. These films were concurrent with Bruce Conner’s A MOVIE (1958), yet signaled an entirely different direction than the diagnostic and rational modernism of Conner and other avant-garde filmmakers. Ortiz turned to destruction, non-Western ritual, and the unconscious while also engaging film as an object rather than a text, bringing the medium into dialogue with the shifting status of the art object and the colonial underpinnings of modern art. The essay explores Ortiz’s intellectual and artistic development, not toward a psychological profile but rather as one element of a broader historical moment. The text moves between the experiential and the contextual, the individual and the societal, the art object and everything else outside the white cube, exploring the relations between them. In this way, telling the story of Ortiz also tells a constellation of simultaneous histories that overlap around his life. Al comenzar como pintor expresionista abstracto a fines de la década de 1950, Ortiz participó en el desarrollo de nuevas formas: cine y música reciclados, escultura de medios mixtos, instalación, performance artístico, teatro de guerrillas, conciertos de destrucción de pianos y arte computacional. A pesar de la presencia e impacto de Ortiz en las artes, sigue siendo un artista poco visible en la historia. Este ensayo sostiene que las primeras destrucciones de Ortiz, las películas recicladas hechas en 1957 y 1958, ponen en cuestión la historia aceptada del cine de vanguardia de los Estados Unidos. Sequential movements in history of art have led to revolutions during the times they originated. Thereafter, they maintained their existence in work of art with their indications. These heritages artists have acquired take them away from their pasts, bring them to present, and at this very point where past and present intersect, enable them to view future. Drawing is the origin of creative practice in all plastic arts, from painting to architecture. Artistic contemplation begins with nature we are part of and a familiar object close by. Examining entity and life-drawing teaches us how to observe. Identifying and contrasting objects are only complete with mathematical discipline, coordination of eyes and hands, and finally with a self-styled line of plastics. In the present paper, drawing is explained in relation to the influence of surrealism. To this end, quotations of portray able examples of our memories’ and dreams’ nonvisible worlds, rather than drawings of entities confined in their external appearances, are given. Line, emerging from imitating the visible, has responded to the messages of the unconscious. This paper examines the drawings of three surrealist artists, namely, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Klee, and Réne Magritte. According to surrealists, the unconscious does not aim solely for the creativity of meaningless facts, yet, it establishes a relationship between facts and objects in human contemplation. In this context, surrealist creation is a rich synthesis for drawing. Today, surrealist aspects can be seen in many drawings. ‭This brief introduction discusses the need for scholars to turn their attention to the intersections between art and Christianity in Latin America, and traces the origins of this special double-issue of Religion and the Arts to a one-day scholarly symposium entitled “Christianity and Latin American Art: Apprehension, Appropriation, Assimilation.” This symposium was sponsored by the Association of Scholars of Christianity in the History of Art (ASCHA), and held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles, California, in February 2012.‬
