Based on carbonyl derivatives of 4-substituted-4-butanolides, the appropriate semi- and thiosemicarbazones have been synthesized. It has been found that some representatives of thiosemicarbazones have pronounced algicidal activity against filamentous green alga Cladophora and blue-green alga (cyanobacterium) Synechocystis and some of the semi- and thiosemicarbazones exhibit moderate antitumor activity. The assessment of the antitumor activity of the compounds was carried out using strains of syngeneic and allogeneic tumor systems as test-objects: lymphocytic leukemia P-388, Lewis lung carcinoma, B16 melanoma and Ehrlich’s ascites tumor. It has also been established that some representatives of thiosemicarbazones exhibit antimutagenic properties. It has been reliably proven that with the formation of a thiazole ring, all properties disappear and a new property in the series of thiazololactones is revealed – antibacterial․

We report herein the synthesis and crystal structures of five new homoleptic copper complexes of curcuminoids. The scarcity of reports of homoleptic complex structures of curcuminoids is attributed to the lack of crystallinity of such derivatives, and therefore, their characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction is rare. The ligand design suppressing the phenolic interaction by esterification or etherification has afforded a significant increase in the number of known crystal structures of homoleptic metal complexes of curcuminoids revealing more favorable crystallinity. The crystal structures of the present new copper complexes show four-fold coordination with a square planar geometry. Two polymorphs were found for DiBncOC-Cu when crystallized from DMF. The characterization of these new complexes was carried out using infrared radiation (IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of the obtained complexes was evaluated.

Polyuronides are an acidic class of polysaccharides with interesting rheological and biological properties. However, except pectin and alginate, the structural variability of this class of polysaccharides is poor and low described in literature. In this context, a new generation of polyuronides has been isolated from two sources in the middle of the 90’s. Firstly, a bacterial β -(1,4) polyglucuronic acid called glucuronan was identified as the sole exopolysaccharide produced by a bacteria belonging to the Rhizobiaceae family. Secondly, the development of the TEMPO chemistry led to the production at large scale of oxidized cellulose called cellouronate. Both new polyuronides were largely patented and found applications in several industrial areas. Moreover, the biodegradation study of these polysaccharides has led to the identification of a new family of polysaccharide lyases very specific for these substrates. This review focuses on the actual knowledge of this class of acidic polysaccharides and on the enzymes acting about them.
