It is widely known that a crisis in science and mathematics teaching exists in the United States. This crisis has reached all levels of education, from elementary to secondary to colleges and universities. The problem, which is easy to define but difficult to resolve, is trifold: there are not enough high-quality science and mathematics teachers; present teachers are teaching out-of field or are out-of-date and in need of subject updating; and the average education graduate is only minimally qualified to teach science and math. These factors have caused national and state “alarms” to be published that point out the increasing mediocrity and an overall lack of science education in our nation’s schools.Central Michigan University, long among the nation’s leaders in the training of teachers at all levels, is taking steps to remedy this alarming situation. A Science and Mathematics Teaching Center, designed to confront the problem head-on, has been founded. The Center’s major purpose is to improve the quality of science and math teaching. This goal is being accomplished through a series of workshops, seminars, in-service programs, conferences, and teacher outreach programs.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a portable voice masker used as an adjunct to stuttering therapy. Eight high-school and three adult stutterers undergoing intensive six-week summer therapy at the Central Michigan University Speech Clinic served as subjects. It was noticed that, when using the masker, a stutterer could often succeed in stopping a stuttering tremor and make a smooth, forceful transition to the next sound. The stutterers were trained to shift their monitoring set from auditory to tactual and proprioceptive channels in order to become aware of this phenomenon. At no time did a stutterer obtain stutter-free speech; however, the severity of his blocks was significantly reduced. The results indicate that the portable voice masker can be employed as a useful adjunct to stuttering therapy.

Purpose – This paper is a case study of the decision at Central Michigan University to take librarians off the reference desk. Departmental data on reference desk traffic and other ancillary functions of the reference department was used to make the case for removing the librarians from the desk. Data collected since the decision was made has supported the decision to move to an on-call reference desk staffing model. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The department reviewed and analyzed data on reference desk transactions of all types from previous years to inform its decision making. Data trends and an analysis of the nature of the questions asked at the reference desk were instrumental in the analysis. Findings – The department determined that the statistical data justified the removal of the librarians from the reference desk. Data collected since moving to the on-call model supports the earlier decision. Originality/value – This paper provides libraries considering their own desk staffing models with a discussion of another library’s decision-making process and evidence of a successful migration to a new reference service model.
