Digital repositories bring direct impact and influence on the research community and society but measuring their value using formal metrics remains challenging. their value. It is challenging to define a single perfect metric that covers all quality aspects. Here, we distinguish here between impact and influence and discuss measures and mentions as the basis of quality metrics of a digital repository. We argue that these challenges may potentially be overcome through the introduction of standard resource identification and data citation practices. We briefly summarize our research and experience in the Neuroscience Information Framework, the BD2K BioCaddie project on data citation, and the Resource Identification Initiative. Full implementation of these standards will depend on cooperation from all stakeholders --- digital repositories, authors, publishers, and funding agencies, but both resource and data citation have been gaining support with researchers and publishers.

Digital repositories bring direct impacts and influence to the research community and society but at the moment it is challenging to objectively measure their value. We distinguished the difference between impacts and influence and discussed measures and mentions as the basis of a quality metric of a digital repository. It is challenging to define a single perfect metric that covers all quality aspects. We argue that these challenges may potentially be overcome through the introduction of standard resource identification and data citation practices. We briefly summarized our research and experience in the Neuroscience Information Framework, the BD2K BioCaddie project on data citation, and the Resource Identification Initiative. We outline our accomplishments and challenges ahead. Full implementation of these standards will depend on cooperation from all stakeholders --- digital repositories, authors, publishers, and funding agencies, for which we have been gaining support with endorsements and resource investments.

While stakeholders in scholarly communication generally agree on the importance of data citation, there is not consensus on where those citations should be placed within the publication – particularly when the publication is citing original data. Recently, CrossRef and the Digital Curation Center (DCC) have recommended as a best practice that original data citations appear in the works cited sections of the article. In some fields, such as the life sciences, this contrasts with the common practice of only listing data identifier(s) within the article body (intratextually). We inquired whether data citation practice has been changing in light of the guidance from CrossRef and the DCC. We examined data citation practices from 2011 to 2014 in a corpus of 1,125 articles associated with original data in the Dryad Digital Repository. The percentage of articles that include no reference to the original data has declined each year, from 31% in 2011 to 15% in 2014. The percentage of articles that include data identifiers intratextually has grown from 69% to 83%, while the percentage that cite data in the works cited section has grown from 5% to 8%. If the proportions continue to grow at the current rate of 19-20% annually, the proportion of articles with data citations in the works cited section will not exceed 90% until 2030.

This chapter presents an overview of the use of digital repositories in the field of education. The authors’ purpose in writing this chapter is not only to provide their readers with general knowledge about educational repositories, but to give them some idea of the various issues and processes involved in launching a digital repository. The chapter first discusses key concepts and general functions of repositories, and offers the authors’ thoughts on the most important functions of repository software management tools. A case study of repository implementation for the State of Florida is briefly described. The chapter closes with a look at some of the different ways repositories are being used nationally and globally, and with the authors’ expectations on future developments in this area.

Considerando la expansión de la producción científica en ambientes informacionales digitales y las nuevas formas de disponibilización de datos siguiendo los principios Linked Data, se objetivó discutir posibilidades de relacionamiento de datasets y enriquecimiento semántico de metadatos en repositorios digitales. Adicionalmente, presentar un modelo de conversión de registros en RDF. Es una investigación teórica y exploratoria, que realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre repositorios digitales y Linked Data. Se demostraron posibilidades del proceso de conversión, con la identificación de bases de datos, vocabularios y estándares que deben ser adoptados para que los datos generados sean enriquecidos semánticamente. El trabajo presenta un modelo que refleja los pasos a ser aplicados durante el proceso de disponibilización de metadatos de un repositorio digital en Linked Data. Se concluye que la integración entre repositorios digitales y las tecnologías de la Web Semántica permite la disponibilización de datos en Linked Data, la cual proporciona nuevos medios para la divulgación y la integración de los recursos en la Web. Considering the expansion of scientific production in digital information environments and the new forms of data availability following the principles of Linked Data, the objective is to discuss possibilities of relationships of datasets and semantic enrichment of metadata in digital repositories and present a model of conversion of records in RDF. It is a theoretical and exploratory research, performing a bibliographic review on digital repositories and Linked Data. In this way, we have demonstrated possibilities of the conversion process, identifying databases, vocabularies and standards that must be adopted so that the generated data is enriched semantically. The work presented a model that reflects the steps that must be taken in the process of making available the metadata of a digital repository in Linked Data. It is concluded that the integration between digital repositories and Semantic Web technologies allows the availability of data in Linked Data, which provides new means for the dissemination and integration of resources on Web.

La presente investigación muestra la ausencia de un repositorio ordenado de la indumentaria utilizada en el ámbito de las artes del espectáculo, rituales y actos festivos en el contexto peruano. Como consecuencia, la brecha entre el objeto y el espectador se amplía a pesar de diferentes eventos realizados de manera presencial. El traje típico, como parte del patrimonio cultural inmaterial de las danzas, ritos y festividades de una ciudad, evoluciona y se transforma con el transcurso del tiempo por diferentes factores. Un repositorio digital que capture la esencia del traje y su evolución es necesario para conectar y vincular con el objeto cultural. En este sentido, a partir de las características definidas en el Ux Honeycomb la investigación propone determinar la interacción entre estas características en un repositorio digital de trajes para generar valor a la comunidad. Para lograr los objetivos, se ha realizado una revisión de literatura, un análisis de repositorios digitales y entrevistas a expertos, profesionales y alumnos de carreras creativas. Los factores de valor encontrados en el repositorio digital a partir de la investigación son: preservación, conexión, representación y conocimiento, los cuales son complementarios. A partir de la interacción, producida por la fuerza interna y externa, de dos o más valores mencionados anteriormente se genera la utilidad del repositorio digital. AbstractThe research herein shows the absence of an orderly repository of the garments worn at the show arts environment, rituals, and festive acts in the Peruvian context. Consequently, the gap between the object and the spectator broadens regardless of several events carried out in a face-to-face manner. The typical costume, as part of the intangible material cultural heritage of the dances, rites, and festivities of a city, evolves and transforms over time due to different factors. A digital repository that captures the essence of the costume and its evolution is necessary to connect and link with the cultural object. In this sense, based on the characteristics defined in the Ux Honeycomb, the research proposes to determine the interaction between these characteristics in a digital costume repository to generate value to the community. In order to achieve the objectives, a review of the literature was made, as well as an analysis of digital repositories and interviews with experts, professionals, and students of creative careers. From the interaction, produced by the internal and external force, of two or more values mentioned above the utility of the digital repository is generated. The relationships and interactions between the elements bring functionality and vitality to the repository. Keywords: Costumes repository, value, cultural heritage, user experience, web design.
