There is a second problem with Vendler’s proposed reduction of “objective” imaginings (from-the-outside) to “subjective” imaginings (from-the-inside): it dismisses the possibility of seeing oneself from-the-outside while still maintaining internal or embodied perspectives such as kinesthetic imagery. Yet internal and external perspectives can often come together or come apart in interesting ways: there is a plurality of perspectives. Evidence for the claim that an external visual perspective may coexist and align with internal embodied and emotional imagery is explored by drawing on examples from autobiographical memory, cinema, and sports psychology. Observer perspectives are memories in which one sees oneself from-the-outside, but one may still maintain internal embodied and emotional imagery and there need be no inherent feeling of detachment.

AbstractThis paper provides an account of the strategic control involved in skilled action. When I discuss strategic control, I have in mind the practical goals, plans, and strategies that skilled agents use in order to specify, structure, and organize their skilled actions, which they have learned through practice. The idea is that skilled agents are better than novices not only at implementing the intentions that they have but also at forming the right intentions. More specifically, skilled agents are able formulate and modify, adjust and adapt their practical intentions in ways that are appropriate, effective, and flexible given their overall goals. Further, to specify the kind of action plans that are involved in strategic control, I’ll rely on empirical evidence concerning mental practice and mental imagery from sports psychology as well as evidence highlighting the systematic differences in the cognitive representations of skills between experts and non-experts. I’ll claim that, together, this evidence suggests that the intentions that structure skilled actions are practical and not theoretical, that is, that they are perceptual and motor and not abstract, amodal, or linguistic. Importantly, despite their grounded nature, these plans are still personal-level, deliberate, rational states. That is, the practical intentions used to specify and structure skilled actions are best conceived of as higher-order, motor-modal structures, which can be manipulated and used by the agent for the purpose of reasoning, deliberation, decision-making and, of course, the actual online structuring and organizing of action.

This study investigates placebos and video games’ usefulness as psychological research tools. One proposed underlying mechanism of the placebo effect is participants’ expectations. Such expectation effects exist in sports psychology and healthcare domains, but inconsistent findings have emerged on whether similar effects impact a participants’ cognitive performance. Concurrently, using video games as task environments is an emerging methodology relating to expertise and large-scale behavioral data collection. Therefore, this study examines the expectancy effect induced by researcher instructions on in-game performance. The instructional expectancy condition for this study is in-game successes framed using emoting (e.g., emoting under the pretense of subsequent performance increases) versus a control group. Preliminary results showed no evidence of different in-game performance between expectancy conditions. Potential mechanisms that could have led to a lack of effect were discussed.

The 'four Cs' (concentration, confidence, control and commitment) are considered the key mental qualities required for success in competitive sports. The increased stress of competing can cause the body to react physically and mentally, producing negative thoughts and decreasing performance. This has led to an increase in the concept of sports psychology, with the development of psychological methods to allow the participant to overcome pre-competition anxieties to confer a positive advantage.

The purpose of this study is to examine the level of knowledge and skills to apply the Psychological Skills Training (PST) among the Co-Curriculum Coaches of Malaysian Teachers' Teachers Institute which are randomly selected. A total of 77coches participated in this study consisting of 63 male coaches and 14 female coaches. The instrument for this study is a set of The Sports Psychology Revised Coach-2 (SPARC) questionnaire modified by the researchers based on the suitability. The questionnaire consists of 2 parts namely coaches demography and knowledge level Psychological Skills Training (PST) consisting of 10 items of questions and skilled to apply psychological Skills Training (PST) exercise sports psychology skills (10 items) based on Likert scale five values. An analysis is carried out descriptively involving frequency and percentage. The results based on application training showed that the method of self-talk training was very frequent and always applied, by 10 samples or 12.9%, followed by stress management training method by 6 samples or 7.8% and findings also showed that 66.2% or 51 samples did not apply the biofeedback training session method while training their athletes. Findings also showed that Co-Curriculum Coaches at the Malaysian Teachers Institute of Malaysia are less knowledgeable and less skilled to apply Psychological Skills Training (PST) even though the coaches have the qualifications in sports specific and sports science certificate at the highest level. 8% and findings also showed that 66.2% or 51 samples did not apply the biofeedback training session method while training their athletes.
