This article is giving an introduction to JSET’s special section on mechanical models. It explains why mechanical models represent essential tools in sports engineering, defines their potential application fields and proposes a possible categorization. Further two short examples of mechanical models with corresponding literature and an overview of the manuscripts included in this special section are given.

The research on multilayer neural network theory has developed rapidly in recent years. It has parallel processing capabilities and fault tolerance and has aroused the interest of many researchers. The neural network has made great progress in the field of control, especially in model identification and control. It has been quickly applied in the fields of device design, optimized operation, and fault analysis and diagnosis. Neural network control, as an automated control technology in the 21st century, has been fully proved by theories and practices at home and abroad, and it is very useful in complex process control. Sports psychology is a discipline that studies the psychological characteristics and laws of people engaged in sports, and it is also a new development in sports science. The main task of sports psychology is to study people’s psychological processes when participating in sports, such as feeling, perception, appearance, thinking, memory, emotion, and characteristics of will and its role and significance in sports. An important feature of multilayer neural networks is to achieve results that match the expected output through network learning. It has strong self-learning, self-adaptability, and fault tolerance. The multilayer neural network system evaluation method is unique with its extraordinary ability to deal with complex nonlinear problems and does not involve human intervention. This article presents a multilayer neural network algorithm, which classifies the samples of athletes, and studies the physical education training process, the psychological characteristics of related personnel in sports competitions, such as the psychological characteristics of the formation of sports skills, and the psychological training of athletes before the game.

The objective of the work presented is to develop emotional competencies in higher-education students by following Bisquerra’s five-block model. With the methodological support of adventure pedagogy and gamification, students improve their emotional competencies, as well as the basic competencies of the degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences and the specific ones of the subject. The proposal, which is entitled “In search of my Avatar”, aims to make sure that, in their future as sports professionals, they will be able to serve their customers in a fully competent way. The work presented proposes different activities of emotional education to work transversally in higher education, ranging from conflict management and the use of language to improve the relationship with oneself and with others. The proposal was developed for the Degree in Sports Science and for the subject of Physical Activity and Sport in the Natural Environment, but with certain adaptations, it could be transferred to any university-degree subject.

The study explores the motivational profiles of Spanish EFL sports science university students from the second language (L2) motivation self system (L2MSS) perspective to ultimately support Spanish higher institutions´ plans committed to improving employability and competitiveness. The study analyzes the relationships between L2 motivation, L2 proficiency, gender, and L2 contextual variables using data from 196 English as a foreign language (EFL) sports science university students. The data reveal that the ideal L2 self construct stands out as the most salient and powerful factor, while the ought-to and rebellious L2 selves are less significant and there are items loading on both of them at the same time. Thus, higher means for the ideal L2 self motivation correspond to higher levels of L2 proficiency and are supported by L2 learning contextual variables. The strongest ought-to L2 self was registered in students with mid-low L2 proficiency and a lack of L2 learning experiences. Meanwhile, the rebellious L2 self is clearly distinguishable only for students with high L2 proficiency. Pedagogical and curricular implications of these findings are that the ideal and the rebellious L2 selves could positively predict students´ L2 proficiency. Thus, new dynamics of education should explore language teaching methodologies that are more likely to enhance students´ ideal and rebellious L2 selves.

This study, which was conducted to examine the employability perceptions of students studying in the field of sports sciences in terms of gender, department, type of university, work in the field of diploma and level of foreign language knowledge, was designed according to correlational survey and causal comparison methods. In determining the sample of the study, accessible sampling method, which is one of the non-random sampling methods, was used. The sample in question consists of a total of 206 participants, 99 females (48.1%) and 107 males (51.9%). As a measurement tool the “Employability Perception Scale” (IEAS) developed by Rothwell et al. (2008) and adapted into Turkish by Karlı (2016), was used in the study. According to the results of the analysis, a significant difference was determined in terms of gender variable in the University Prestige sub-dimension (p < 0.05). No significant difference was determined in terms of other sub-dimensions and variables. As a result, it is possible to state that the employability perception of the students studying in the field of sports sciences is high, that the female participants perceive their university as more prestigious than the male participants, and this contributes positively to their belief that they can be employed in this situation.

This study aims to analyze the views of Erasmus+ Exchange students studying in the field of sports in different countries regarding the programme. In the study, descriptive phenomenology design, one of qualitative study designs, was used. In accordance with this aim, five open ended questions answered by 14 foreign students participating in the Erasmus+ exchange programme in different universities offering sports science programmes in Portugal were analyzed through content analysis. The data obtained from the students were discussed under five themes, which are; reasons for participating in the programme, contribution to the field, challenges faced, similarities and differences with their education and suggestions. The views expressed by the students reveal that their reason for participating in the programme is to experience different cultures; the contribution of the programme to their field is the different course styles; the challenges they face are language and financial challenges; the similarity with the education in their country is the course contents and the difference is the teaching styles; and their suggestion is that the students shouldn’t be afraid to participate in exchange programmes.

The study purpose. This study aims to determine the level of understanding of the pedagogical competence ofPhysical Education, Health and Recreation students of the Faculty of Sports Science, Yogyakarta State University, batch 2016. Materials and methods. This research method is a survey with a quantitative descriptive approach. The population is 180 physical education students, the sample selection is 52 physical education students using incidental sampling technique. The research instrument is a valid and reliable questionnaire. The data analysis technique is the analysis presented using the percentage. Results. The results obtained show that the level of understanding of the pedagogic competence of Physical Education, Health and Recreation students of the Faculty of Sports Science, Yogyakarta State University, class 2016 was “very low” 3.85% (2 students), “low” 67.31% (35 students), “medium” 19.23% (10 students), “high” 9.62% (5 students) and “very high” 0% (0 students). Conclusions. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the level of understanding of the pedagogic competence of Physical Education students is in the low category.

In the last decade, the number of studies about machine learning algorithms applied to sports, e.g., injury forecasting and athlete performance prediction, have rapidly increased. Due to the number of works and experiments already present in the state-of-the-art regarding machine-learning techniques in sport science, the aim of this narrative review is to provide a guideline describing a correct approach for training, validating, and testing machine learning models to predict events in sports science. The main contribution of this narrative review is to highlight any possible strengths and limitations during all the stages of model development, i.e., training, validation, testing, and interpretation, in order to limit possible errors that could induce misleading results. In particular, this paper shows an example about injury forecaster that provides a description of all the features that could be used to predict injuries, all the possible pre-processing approaches for time series analysis, how to correctly split the dataset to train and test the predictive models, and the importance to explain the decision-making approach of the white and black box models.

The careful use of online learning can achieve a variety of goals in sustainable education, such as providing access for students, particularly in times of crisis, as well as providing them with opportunities to study interdependently. Also, it gives them the opportunity to develop thinking skills and awareness to become active in working towards sustainable societies, ones where the actions of the current society do not damage the abilities of future generations to address their own needs. In this small-scale study at a Japanese national university, the switch from classroom-based teaching to online study in language education is considered in relation to flipped learning. This involved videoconferencing software and the organization of “study buddy” groups, supported by materials on a learning management system. The effect of the change has been investigated using a mixed-methods approach with survey data from students and data from two classroom observations by external observers. The data has been analyzed and framed in relation to sustainable education goals, produced by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), such as cooperation, interdependence, sense of responsibility, and international awareness. The author of this study found that the flipped learning approach was successful in building an online community and social interaction that provided the framework for achieving education for sustainability. In conclusion, the author considers how hybrid courses involving both classrooms and online technology may be the future for English language courses in Japanese universities.
