Heart rate monitoring is becoming more and more important in the development of modern health industry. At present, wireless sensor network equipment is mainly used to realize the real-time or periodic monitoring of human heart rate, so as to realize the health management of specific people. At the same time, the monitoring and analysis technology of heart rate is also widely used in special competitive sports. Through the real-time monitoring and analysis of athletes’ heart rate, we can feedback and analyze their corresponding competitive state in real time, so as to monitor the sudden state of athletes, and also provide a basis for the improvement of athletes’ later sports level. Based on this, this paper will use a single-chip microcomputer as the central data processing unit of the monitoring system at the hardware level, and inertial sensor and heart rate sensor at the sensor level. The system will design data acquisition module, motion positioning module, low-power module, athlete heart rate acquisition module, and motion state recognition module. Aiming at the low accuracy of traditional heart rate acceleration motion wireless sensor in competitive sports athletes’ heart rate recognition and motion state recognition, this paper innovatively proposes an athlete heart rate recognition algorithm based on acceleration signal, which extracts the frequency-domain characteristics of motion signal. The time-domain and time-frequency characteristics of athletes’ acceleration signal are used to realize the recognition of athletes’ sports state, and the power spectrum cancellation technology is used to realize the accurate detection of athletes’ heart rate. In order to verify the advantages of the hardware system and algorithm in this paper, three sports with quiet, dynamic, and random dynamic characteristics are selected for experimental verification. The experimental results show that the software algorithm proposed in this paper has obvious accuracy advantages in quiet and dynamic competitive sports compared with the traditional algorithm.

The rejection of coming out as a linear narrative must be accompanied by an alternative to the formulas of confession, disclosure, and identity adoption that have pervaded the current representations of coming out in the West. The appearance of coming out in film narratives provides important opportunities to observe how elements such as repetition, rehearsal, and, above all, contrasts are incorporated into the stories that are recounted. Conventional coming-out films have relied so heavily on the restrictive nature of the genre’s narrative structure that the potential for alternative, or queered, realities of coming out is erased. The continual reappearance and adaptations of coming out will enable a better understanding of the ways in which the act is presented as a moment that is never finished and that often evades a final, perfected, and polished performance. Four specific narratives from queer film—Beautiful Thing (1996), Summer Storm(2004), Brotherhood (2009), and North Sea Texas (2011)—will be presented to offer counter models for coming out. In Beautiful Thing, the visual narrative demonstrates the importance of the reiterative, adaptable, and unanticipated representation of the act in visual media. In Summer Storm, the audience witnesses how coming out occurs in a world of competitive sports and where the teenage athletes reveal secrets that everyone already knows. In Brotherhood, the act of coming out is transformed into a moment when identities are instantaneously accepted and rejected within a homophobic, neo-Nazi subculture. In North Sea Texas, the script of coming out is reimagined by two characters who ambiguously decline any opportunity to define their identities. Coming out in visual narratives must be understood through an elaboration of Janet Harbord’s belief that the audience gravitates toward particular visual narratives where a comfort zone is created. These films have authored reiterative and adaptable approaches to the act of coming out that both comfort and challenge the audience.

Abstract. Young athletes face mental challenges both in competitive sports and in school. High self-efficacy and self-regulation competence contribute to an individual’s ability to successfully master these challenges. The present study links the domains of competitive sports and academic education by investigating the relationships of self-efficacy and self-regulation to performance in mathematics lessons. Here, we compare competitive rowers ( n = 239) and “regular” students ( n = 171; total N = 410). The competitive rowers showed a higher subjective expectation of self-efficacy, which in both groups had a positive effect on mathematics grades. While self-regulation had a mediating effect on the competitive rowers in this context, we observed no significant effect for the regular students. The study provides evidence that competitive athletes are apt to use psychosocial resources fostered by professional sports training across domains.

In this article, we introduce a theory on the dynamic development of affective processes, affect regulation, and the relationship between emotions and sport performance. The theory focusses on how affective processes emerge and develop during competitive sport involvement. Based on Scherer’s component process model, we postulate six components of emotion that interact with each other in a circular fashion: (I) triggering processes, (II) physiological reactions, (III) action tendencies, (IV) expressive behaviors, (V) subjective experience, and (VI) higher cognitive processes. The theory stresses the dynamics of affective processes and describes the consequences for performance in competitive sports. It assumes that the peculiarities of different sports must be taken into account in order to understand the affective processes, and offers starting points on which strategies can be used to effectively regulate affective states. Consequences for research and practice are derived and discussed. To study the development of affective processes, future research should test the assumptions in ecologically valid contexts, such as real competitions or competition-like situations, using multi-component measures of emotions.

The goal of this research was to test whether and to what extent mental toughness contribute to the explanation of state anxiety in athletes. This study relied on a multidimensional construct of anxiety which includes somatic and cognitive anxiety. Dimensions of anxiety were measured with “Competitive State Anxiety Inventory-2” (cognitive and somatic anxiety), and mental toughness was measured with “Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire”. The research sample consisted of 117 athletes, 67 men and 50 women, who have been actively engaged in various competitive sports. The structure of the sample by age was: 64 athletes are from 20 to 25 years old; 19 respondents aged 25 to 30; 31 athletes aged 30 to 35; and 4 respondents are over 35 years old. The results showed statistically significant correlations between dimensions and overall mental toughness on the one hand and cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety on the other. Multiple regression analysis was conducted with the aim of predicting the dimensions of anxiety based on mental toughness. Based on the dimensions of mental toughness, 25% of the variability of cognitive anxiety and 22% of somatic anxiety were explained. Self-confidence as a dimension of mental strength is a predictor of all dimensions of the state of anxiety. This study has indicated a great significance of developing athletes’ mental toughness with the goal of reducing anxiety and achieving better performance in competitions.

Abstract The primary objective of preparticipation cardiovascular evaluation (PPCE) in young athletes is to detect asymptomatic individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD) at risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD). The study population included a consecutive series of competitive athletes age 12–18 years who underwent PPCE, which according to Italian law is mandatory and based on yearly evaluations, at the Center for Sports Medicine of Treviso (Veneto region of Italy), from 2009 to 2019. The screening protocol included personal and family history questionnaire, physical examination, resting 12-lead ECG, and limited stress testing for evaluation of exertional ventricular arrhythmias. 2,3 This latter test was performed using a bicycle with constant-load increases (i.e. 2 W/kg in female participants and 3 W/kg in male participants) for 3 min for at least 85% or more of maximal heart rate was achieved, plus 3 min of postexercise monitoring. 3 Athletes with a positive medical history and abnormal physical examination, ECG, or stress test underwent further investigations. The diagnostic yield of the initial screening session was compared with that of repeat PPCEs. Athletes with a definitive diagnosis of CVD at risk of SCD were considered ineligible for competitive sports, although they received a tailored programme for leisure physical activity and were enrolled in a yearly follow-up programme. Outcome data of screened athletes, either eligible or ineligible to play competitive sports, were obtained from office visits, hospital records, or interrogation of the Registry of Juvenile SCD of the Veneto region. The study population included 15 127 consecutive athletes (64% male, 96% White) who underwent a total of 53 396 annual PPCEs (mean 3.7 per athlete) over the 11-year study period. The median age at first screening was 13 years [interquartile range (IQR): 12–14]. Sixty-three athletes (65% male) were diagnosed with a CVD at risk of SCD such as congenital heart disease (n = 17), ion channel disease (n = 11), inherited cardiomyopathy (n = 13), isolated nonischaemic left ventricular scar (NLVS) with ventricular arrhythmias (n = 18), or other (n = 4); 266 athletes had cardiac conditions not associated with SCD. Seventeen of the 63 athletes (27%) with atrisk CVD had a positive family history, symptoms, or abnormal physical examination, 38 (60%) had ECG abnormalities, and 32 (51%) developed arrhythmias on limited exercise testing. CVDs more frequently identified on repeat evaluation included inherited cardiomyopathies [7/11 (64%)], NLVS with ventricular arrhythmias [15/18 (83%)], and long QT syndrome [7/11 (64%)]. During a mean follow-up of 6.7 ± 3.5 years, 1 athlete with a negative PPCE experienced an episode of aborted SCD attributable to ventricular fibrillation that remained unexplained after a comprehensive diagnostic workup (event rate, 0.98/100 000 athletes per year). These results show that annual cardiovascular screening of adolescent athletes increased by three times the diagnostic yield of CVD at risk of SCD compared with a once-only (initial) evaluation. Inherited cardiomyopathies and isolated NLVS with ventricular arrhythmias were the CVDs more frequently identified on repeat evaluation.

In order to explore the relationship between sport motivation sport mental fatigue, as well as the mediating effect of coping style, a sample of 523 active athletes were recruited to complete sport motivation questionnaire, sport mental fatigue questionnaire and coping inventory for competitive sports. The result indicated that sport motivation negatively predicted the sport mental fatigue. Coping style partially mediated the relationship between sport motivation and sport mental fatigue. The mediating effect accounted for 65% of total effect. Sport motivation and coping style explain the 35% variation of sport mental fatigue. The harm effect of sport mental fatigue on sport motivation could be reduced while the coping style could be improved.

The popularity of doping in competitive sports is relevant for all those involved in sports, particularly for evaluating anti-doping policy measures. However, there is a gap of information that addresses this subject so far. As a consequence, the prevalence of doping in competitive sports in resource limited countries is unknown. Even though it is challenging to uncover the exact prevalence of herbal products with prohibited activity such as doping, various methods put in place by world antidoping agency (WADA) have now been adopted to uncover parts of this particular problem, and enables the circumvention to some extend the issues of honesty, definition problems and the limits of pharmacological evidence. It is evident that current doping control test results can show a distinct underestimation of true doping prevalence in low middle income countries (LMIC). Nowadays, doping is a critical issue at international levels of sporting competitions. Athletes’ use of herbal supplements has seen a significant increase in the past two decades. At the top of the list of popular herbs used in sports are echinacea and ginseng, whereas garlic, St. John’s wort, soybean, ephedra and others are also gaining popularity or have been historically prevalent. Despite the increasing popularity of herbal supplements, recent events have illustrated possible concerns regarding efficacy and safety of herbal supplements usage. Remarkable sports performances at the end of the 20th century raised suspicions about herbal supplement use by athletes, prompting the formation of WADA. With WADA creation it was not long when the deaths of two professional athletes raised concerns that the herbal supplement ephedra, may have contributed to their deaths. These events and others have prompted clinicians and scientists to reexamine and evaluate the role of herbal supplements in competitive sports. This review attempts to give an insight into the use of herbal supplement in doping within the concept of play clean to win clean. An attempt has been made to provide guidance on the efficacy and side effect of most used herbal supplements found in sporting activities, especially in international competitive sports.
