Intense heat from fire can result in significant damage to firefighting robots. To avoid this damage, numerous studies have been conducted on the thermal insulation of firefighting robots using electrical motors and sensors that can not withstand high temperatures. In this paper, we present an attachable skin for enhancing the thermal resistance of firefighting robots using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), where a wet chemical extinguishing agent is injected into the holes on PDMS. The pilot experiment was conducted to verify the thermal insulation performance of a wet chemical extinguishing agent compared to water. Several experiments were also carried out with different diameters, depths, shapes, and degrees of PDMS holes to determine optimum hole dimensions. The results demonstrated that the thermal resistance of PDMS skin is related to the capacity of the wet chemical extinguishing agent. In addition, the performance of the PDMS skin can be verified by its variation according to the ignition time.

As reason of increasing requirements of thermal insulation properties of the exposed envelope, reflective insulation are among kind of modern thermal insulation materials ones, which can significantly increased thermal insulation performance if their application is correct. Thermal insulation performance is caused by reduction of the heat transfer by radiation. Conjunction of low-emissivity surface of the reflective insulation and air layer is important to account. This article is focused on the determination of thermal properties of reflective insulation and the results of measured values thermal resistance of determination by hot box method using heat flow meter are presented here. As part of determination of thermal properties of reflective insulation by experimental methods, the test element used to measure the thermal resistance of an insulated air cavity had to be created for concordance with the normative requirements. The part of this article is determination of the thermal resistance by the calculation of derived physical relations and comparison with values of the laboratory measurement.

The infrared opacifiers loaded Al2O3 aerogel-SiO2 fiber mat composites were fabricated by the sol–gel process. The effects of the content of the TiO2 and SiC particles on thermal insulation performance of the Al2O3 aerogel-SiO2 fiber mat composites were studied. The results showed that the optimum doping content of TiO2 and SiC for Al2O3 aerogel-SiO2 fiber mat composites were 10[Formula: see text]mol.% and 0.5[Formula: see text]mol.%, respectively. The optimum TiO2-Al2O3 aerogel-SiO2 fiber mat composite had the low thermal conductivity of 0.021[Formula: see text]W/(m[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K) at 35∘C and 0.031[Formula: see text]W/(m[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K) at 600∘C. Meanwhile, the SiC-Al2O3 aerogel-SiO2 fiber mat composite also had the low thermal conductivity of 0.022[Formula: see text]W/(m[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K) at 35∘C and 0.025[Formula: see text]W/(m[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K) at 600∘C.

The hole shape design of perforated brick directly affects thermal insulation performance of wall. In order to study the influence of shape, size and configuration of perforated brick on the insulation performance, six kinds of perforated brick with different hole shape were designed, and their temperature field were simulated with finite element method. The results show that the insulation performance of perforated brick with square hole is the best. Filling brick holes with thermal insulation materials can improve the insulation performance of perforated brick, Besides; The thermal conductivity of perforated brick affects its thermal resistance, so brick materials with low thermal conductivity should be developed for the achievement of energy-saving standard of wall thermal resistance.

Graphitic carbon-doped silica aerogels, including graphite-doped and graphene-doped silica aerogels, were fabricated by the sol–gel method. Thermal resistance was a significant comprehensive parameter which could reflect the ability to prevent the heat transfer. In order to give a direct evaluation of the thermal insulation performance, the calculated formula of thermal resistance for graphitic carbon-doped silica aerogel thermal insulation layers had been given through theoretic analysis on the basis of the thermal conductivity and the aerogel-based heat insulation layers showed good thermal insulation performance. It was expected that theoretical evaluation and experimental research could provide a reference for the reliability and performance in the field of the aerogel-based insulation layers.
