Background. The arches used in orthodontic therapy are subject to increasing physical and chemical stresses. Purpose of the study: This in vitro experimental study aims to highlight and compare the main mechanical properties of orthodontic arches. Materials and Methods: We used 40 springs, 2 materials, 20 of Ni-Cr and 20 of Co-Cr, of different diameters, 0.7 mm 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm, subjected to the environment of artificial saliva and artificial saliva with cola for one month and two months, respectively. Five springs of each material were tested at different times: T0, before application in the oral cavity, then at time T1, T2, T3, T4. Three lengths of the lever arm were considered for bending forces acting on the springs (dental wires). These lengths were 15, 10 and 5 mm. The wires were tested under the action of bending forces on a Hans Schmidt HV 500N stand, obtaining the characteristics of the wires: deformation-force-time. Results: Graphical determinations show that the degree of deformation of the wires is influenced by the applied force, diameter and obviously by the immersion time, respectively by the type of solution in which the springs were immersed. Conclusions: The final degree of bending is higher for Co-Cr arcs than for Ni-Cr at all three dimensions.

Comfort is a key feature of any clothing that relates significantly to softness of the fiber, yarn and fabric from which is it constructed. A known softness assessment method for fibers is the resistance to compression test. This traditional test only provides a single force value for the resistance of a loose fiber sample using a fixed mass under compression. In this research, a modified resistance to compression test was introduced to show the effects of repeated compression, providing more information about the softness and resilience of selected fibers. Three different natural fiber types, including wool, cotton and alpaca were compared using this new approach. The results showed compression profiles were quite different for different fiber types as well as for the same fibers with different diameters. While the diameters of the wool and alpaca samples were similar (18.5 μm), the modified resistance to compression values were significantly higher for wool (with a peak value at 9.5 kPa compared to 2.1 kPa for alpaca). Cotton was different from wool and alpaca but showed a similar modified resistance to compression value (10.4 kPa) to wool. During cycles of compression, modified resistance to compression peak values decreased slightly and then tended to be constant. Even though the structures of wool, cotton and alpaca were quite different, there was no significant difference in the magnitude of decline in modified resistance to compression peak values. This means that the modified resistance to compression test is able to provide additional information on the resilience characteristics of different natural fibers, and can reveal the resistance behavior of fiber samples during cyclic compression.

Abstract This study was designed to compare the postoperative outcomes of bicanalicular intubation using different diameters of silicone tubes to treat post-saccal nasolacrimal duct obstruction. A total of 130 patients diagnosed with post-saccal obstruction who underwent endoscopic-assisted silicone tube intubation were included in the study. The patients were divided into two groups; those intubated with a 1.5-mm large diameter tube (Group LD) and those with a 1.0-mm normal diameter tube (Group ND). The patency rates of the two groups at one year after tube removal were compared using the Kaplan–Meier's curve and Restricted mean survival time (RMST) method with τ = 365 days. Results showed that the recurrence rate after tube removal was significantly lower in the LD group compared to the ND group (p = 0.001). The patency rates at one year after removal in the LD and ND group were 0.857 (0.754-0.919) and 0.739 (0.617-0.828), respectively. When comparing the patency rates by the RMST method at τ = 365 days, the RMST difference, RMST ratio, and RMTL ratio were higher in the LD group at p = 0.045, 0.052, and 0.046, respectively.

Baffles with holes in different diameters (or HDD baffles) and conically-corrugated tubes are respectively longitudinal flow baffle and high-efficiency heat exchange tubes proposed by the author. In this paper, vibrations of tube bundles with HDD baffles and fluid flow as well as heat transfer inside conically-corrugated tubes were numerically simulated, and the heat exchanger with conically-corrugated tubes and HDD baffles was tested for the heat transfer efficiency. It is found that compared with the traditional segmental baffles, tube bundle vibrations in heat exchangers, if using the HDD baffles, can be significantly reduced. Regarding heat transfer efficiency, conically-corrugated tubes are much better than smooth tubes and even better than other high-efficiency heat transfer tubes. Compared with the traditional heat exchangers, heat exchangers constructed with conically-corrugated tubes and the HDD baffles can provide better heat transfer efficiency and less tube bundle vibration.

Abstract The aim of this work is to make a visual investigation of the fire behavior during the extinguish process with water mist at different temperatures, different diameters of the nozzle and different angles of diffusion jet, too. It was used a numerical simulation approach to analyze 24 scenarios regarding the influence of mist water in fire extinguish process. The main test was focused on a given enclosure with dimensions of 1.0 × 1.0 × 3.0 m and the fire source placed inside, in the middle. The enclosure is considered opened on the upper part. From the numerical simulation values, we concluded the best scenario in fire extinguish process using water mist.

Abstract Two types of fatigue cracks at arc notch in steel bridge deck were repaired by drilling stop-holes. The effect of stop-holes with different diameters and positions was considered. Based on finite element models, the variation laws of stress distribution and the effects of stress concentration were compared for different stop-hole diameters and positions. Analysis results indicated that stop-hole can effectively improve the stress concentration at crack tip and the fatigue life of components can be considerably increased. The crack-stopping performance enhances with the increase of stop-hole diameter, but large stop-hole cannot effectively retard crack growth. The stop-hole performs well with the location at -0.5D∼0.5D. The maximum stress point still appears at crack tip when the stop-hole is outside or inside the crack. The stop-hole diameter has no effect on the stop-hole location.

Abstract In this paper, the laboratory data were compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) Flow3D for predicting the beginning of sediment incipient motion in rigid boundary channel for two types of sands, irrigation, and sewer types, in rectangular flume (0.5*0.5)m cross-section. Tests were made for soil samples with different diameters, specific weights. The testing was performed in slopes ranging from 0.001-0.003 for irrigation types and 0.0025-0.025 for sewer types depending on the original parameter. The Flow-3D software has simulated the laboratory work using scouring models MPM and Nielsen. the relation between sediment incipient motion velocity, particle size, and channel bed slope was predicted. The results were relatively more than laboratory data for the MPM model, while grating convergence for Nielsen model, especially for small diameter sediment. Also, the laboratory results are more close to the results of Flow3D using the Nielsen model when the value of bed slope of the channel is greater, and vice versa when the slope decreases.
