Abstract This work concerns the comfort-related properties of seersucker woven fabrics made of cotton. Seersucker woven fabrics are characterized by alternating puckered and flat strips in the warp direction. Some researchers consider that due to this structure seersucker fabrics are characterized by very good comfort-related properties. In this work seersucker fabrics with differing repeats of the seersucker effect and different weft yarns were investigated in intense heat and high moisture transfer. Results showed that the structural factors significantly influence the comfort-related properties of the investigated cotton fabrics.

Background: Season of the year can affect the reproductive behavior in Holstein cows, altering the competition of the oocytes, reflecting a reduced production of embryos. The objective of this study was to evaluate the average of total oocytes, competition of oocytes and embryos in the in vitro production process at different season of the year in Holstein cows. Methods: During the four seasons of the year, was performed on each of the oocyte donor cows (winter, n = 957; spring, n = 1571; summer, n = 1776; autumn, n = 1128), by in vivo transvaginal follicular aspiration technique after the collection were subjected to the embryos production in vitro. Result: The highest number of total embryos were produced in winter and autumn, compared to spring and summer (3.76±0.16 and 3.54±0.18 vs. 2.73±0.11 and 2.45±0.10; respectively, P less than 0.05). During winter, a higher percentage of oocyte competition was observed, followed by autumn and spring and less competition shown in summer (26.03±0.39, 19.08±0.29, respectively, P less than 0.05). The quantity and competence of the oocytes collected and in vitro embryo production were drastically reduced during the hottest months of the year in this area of intense heat.

Abstract Understanding the patterns of heat transfer during quenching is important for many technical applications. Of particular interest is the boiling regime, which is characterized by high intensity and occurs at surface temperatures exceeding the temperature of attainable liquid superheat. This work is aimed at studying the effect of surfactants on the onset of intense heat transfer during quenching. For this, experiments were carried out on quenching spheres made of different metals (nickel, stainless steel and zirconium) in water with different concentrations of surfactants. The surfactant was alkylbenzene sulfonate, the concentration of which varied from 0.1 to 2%. The analysis of the obtained cooling thermograms revealed the influence of not only the surfactant concentration on the beginning of the intensive cooling mode, but also the state of the heat transfer surface.

The paper analyzes the dynamics of formation of a collection of Astilbe varieties and species included in the bioresource collection USU 44053 in the conditions of Western Siberia forest-steppe. The ways of further expansion of Astilbe collection fund are substantiated by attracting representatives of the Astilbe chinensis , A. crispa groups; varieties with rhombic, narrow-lobed and pyramidal inflorescences, primarily belonging to the group of colors: red, dark red, purple and dark purple. In contrast to the conditions of the middle zone of Russia in which Astilbe are divided into four groups according to the period of flowering: 1) very early (end of June - July), 2) early (July), 3) medium (mid-July - mid-August) and 4) late (end of August - mid-September), for the conditions of Western Siberia forest-steppe, with intense heat gain in mid-May-early June, the flowering dates of very early and early varieties converge. Accordingly, there are three groups: early-flowering (bloom July 8-10), medium-flowering (bloom from July 15-18), late-flowering (bloom from late July-early August). It is proposed to add a narrow-lobed and pyramidal-drooping inflorescence to the traditionally described forms of Astilbe varieties. The expansion of the set of dwarf varieties from the A. crispa group with strongly dissected fringed leaves gives additional opportunities for a landscape design.

Activity pattern of the Golden Jackal was studied by camera trapping survey in an urban influenced protected habitat in Odisha, eastern India from January to April 2019. A total of 552 independent photos of Golden Jackals were obtained from 771 trap nights. Although Golden Jackals were active throughout the day, they showed two major peaks in activity; the first peak during late evening after sunset, and the second peak during early morning until sunrise. The reduced activity of Golden Jackal during day time in the present study area might be due to less movement of prey species, intense heat, and heavy human traffic.

Globally, 2020 ended the warmest decade since the beginning of the measurements (WMO), and the warmest year was 2016, marked by a strong and intense El Ñino. In Oltenia the warmest year was 2019 with the average for the whole region of 12.4°C and the deviation from normal of 2.5°C, followed by 2020 with the general average of 12.2°C and the deviation from normal of 2.3°C. After the 2019- 2020 warm winter, which was the second Mediterranean winter in southern Romania, followed the normal thermal spring in which climatic anomalies were frequent. The summer of 2020 was warm and marked by great climate variability, given by the presence of a weak La Ñina climate process. Since June, the average temperature is normal and unstable, the climatic alternations and the progressive increase of the air temperature, determined that in August the weather will be the warmest during the summer and an intense heat wave occurred at the end of the month with the peak on 1.IX.2020.The paper analyses special climate variability in the summer of 2020, which is the continuation of an extensive series of works on climate variability and climate change in southwestern Romania (I. Marinică 2006, I. Marinică, Andreea Floriana, 2016, 2020). The paper is useful to all those interested in climate variability and climate change in this part of Romania.

Mine workings located in the areas of the ascending movement of thermal waters are characterized by intense water flow and significant water cut. Our observations and calculations showed that when hot water is poured into the workings, mainly due to the intense heat and mass transfer from water to air, the increase in the heat content of the ventilation stream increases sharply and over 100-300 m (depending on the air flow rate) the temperature mine air saturated with water vapor becomes approximately equal to the temperature of hot waters. Therefore, without preliminary diversion or elimination of the inflow of hot water, in this case, the creation of normal climatic conditions in mine workings is practically impossible.

Abstract Burns are a common cause of pediatric injury and represent significant morbidity and mortality in this age group. In children, most burns are thermal, resulting from exposure to a hot surface, liquid, or fire. Cyanoacrylate is a liquid compound commonly found in households, mainly in “superglue” and nail glue. This compound solidifies through an exothermic reaction that is magnified when in contact with certain fibers that act as catalysts, such as cotton. In these circumstances, intense heat is produced in the contact area, potentially causing severe thermal burns. Despite its widespread availability, there is a paucity of safety information about cyanoacrylate and its role as a cause for burns. In the literature, only 18 cases of cyanoacrylate burns are reported in children. We present 2 cases of pediatric burns with cyanoacrylate and a review of the literature.

In the wake of climate change and global warming, the production systems of water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) are receiving increasing attention in the tropics, where the silvopastoral systems can improve animal welfare and production conditions. The objective of this study was to characterize the behavior of heifer buffaloes in a silvopastoral system (SPS) with Leucaena leucocephala (600 trees/ha) and in a conventional system (CVS), under intense heat stress and moderate heat stress in Cuba. We observed nine animals, with an average weight of 167.9 kg at the beginning of the study, during the daylight period, from 6:00 to 18:00 h, at 10 min intervals, for 12 days. Activities recorded were grazing, ingestion of tree leaves, rumination, water intake, walking, lying, standing, sheltering in the shade of trees, and wallowing. Sheltering in the shade of trees and wallowing were collectively considered as thermoregulatory behavior (TB). TB was different in both systems and conditions of heat stress (p < 0.05), with 4.06 in CVS and 3.81 h in SPS in the intense heat stress period, while it was 2.91 and 1.08 h for SPS and CVS, respectively, during the moderate heat stress period. The wallowing activity showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) in the intense heat stress season with 1.18 and 2.35 h for SPS and CVS, respectively. Time spent on feeding behavior was highest in the SPS system (p < 0.05). Longer times of thermoregulatory and feeding behavior indicate the importance of trees in animal welfare for this species in tropical conditions, thus supporting avoided deforestation and the replanting of trees in existing production systems and landscapes.
