Field experiments were carried out at Dinajpur, Nilphamari and Faridpur from July, 2017 to March, 2018 to evaluate the performance of native land races of rice viz., Chinigura, Kataribhog, Radhunipagol, Badshabhog, Kalozira, Uknimadhu, Dudshar, Salna, Shitabhog and Zirashail to assess G x E interaction against five quantitative characters, plant height (cm), productive tillers/hill, 1000-grain weight (g), grain yield/m2 and days to maturity, and three qualitative characters, proline (%) as µmol/g fresh weight, aroma from green leaves and cooked rice. The field experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The highest grain yield (390.25 g/m2) was obtained from Radhunipagol at Dinajpur. Next to Radhunipagol, Kataribhog produced higher grain yield (350.00 g/m2) which was significantly higher than that of Nilphamari and Faridpur but Radhunipagol was suited both for Dinajpur and Nilphamari. The cultivar, Kalozira was adapted to three locations as reflected by its regression coefficient very close to unity (b=0.92) and deviation from the coefficient estimated very near to zero (s2d=0.16). Maximum proline was estimated (18.7 µmol/g fresh weight) from Chinigura cultivated at Dinajpur. The proline (%) estimated average from Kalozira at three locations and the range varied from 14.00 -15.90 µmol/g fresh weight. Dinajpur appeared as the best and Faridpur as an unfavorable location for local aromatic rice cultivars. Since, aroma was assessed through sensory method the maximum aroma was assessed from Chinigura under Dinajpur but its content gradually decreased at Nilphamari and Faridpur. The aroma assessed from cooked rice ranged from 7.05-8.90 over three locations but maximum aroma was assessed under Dinajpur. Chinigura, Radhunipagol and Kataribhog found suitable for Dinajpur, and Kalozira and Badshabhog might suggest cultivating over the locations of Bangladesh.

An experiment was carried out at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh to evaluate the effect of urea super granule (USG) as a source of nitrogen on the yield and yield components of transplant Aman rice cv. BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan46 and BINA dhan7. Five levels of N (viz., 0, 60, 120 kg ha-1 as prilled urea and 60 and 120 kg ha-1 as USG) were taken as experimental treatments. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Plant height, effective tillers hill-1, grains panicle-1 and grain yield varied significantly due to different cultivars. All the yield and yield components except 1000-grain weight were influenced significantly by the levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The highest grain yield (4.82 t ha-1) was recorded in BINA dhan7 and the lowest one (4.30 t ha-1) was recorded in BRRI dhan39. Nitrogen @ 120 kg ha-1 as USG performed the best among the treatments in respect of yield and yield components of rice. The highest grain yield (5.46t ha-1) was obtained from BINA dhan7 with 120 kg N ha-1 as USG which was statistically identical with 60 kg N ha-1 as USG. A considerable amount (31.25%) of prilled urea (PU) nitrogen could be saved by using USG. A field experiment was conducted at the Agrotechnology Field Laboratory of Khulna University during the boro season to evaluate the effect of planting density on the performance of rice variety BRRI dhan28. The experiment received twelve treatments, which were divided into two distinct patterns - single row and paired row. The single row had four treatments and paired row had eight treatments. Planting densities were 40, 27, 20 and 16 hills m-2. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Standard management practices were followed in raising crops. Results revealed that closer spacing produced higher yields where 40 hills m-2 produced the most (4.81 t ha-1), which was statistically similar with that of 27 hills   m-2. Paired row planting showed better performance than single row planting. Plant height, grains panicle-1, sterile spikelets panicle-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield were found better in paired row planting. Paired row planting at a spacing of (35 cm + 15 cm) × 10 cm  i.e row to row distance is 35 cm & 15 cm and hill to hill distance is 10 cm; found the highest grain yield (4.81 t ha-1) and the lowest yield (2.97 t ha-1) was found in single row using a spacing of 25 cm × 25 cm.Bangladesh Agron. The aim of the present study was to compare the selection performed by the sum of standardized variables index (Z Index) with the selection based only on the grain yield character, to verify if the grain yield alone is a good alternative for the selection involving multiple characters. The experiments were conducted in Lavras-MG and in Lambari-MG, during the 2015/2016 agricultural year. The used design was the randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Thirty-six genotypes of the preliminary trial of upland rice breeding program of the Federal University of Lavras were evaluated. In order to compose the Z index, the following characteristics were evaluated: grain yield, height, number of days for flowering, 1000-grain weight, income, yield, leaf blast incidence, and grain length/width ratio. Z index was efficient in the selection for multiple characters whereas not all lines with the highest grain yield obtained good results in the other desirable characteristics, indicating that the selection based only on grain yield is not efficient when working with several characters of interest in upland rice cultivation.

Phosphorus is one macronutrient that commonly gets fixed and accumulates into soils after it has been in use for long, thus becoming readily unavailable to plants in subsequent years. Such scenario is ontological in Mwea where rice farming is practiced, yet this element is one main critical nutrient that plants cannot do without for they need it for root initiation, root development, photosynthesis, grain- formation, grain-filling, as well as yielding. In that view therefore, an experiment was undertaken in Mwea irrigation scheme with the aim of investigating on the influence of phosphorus levels on yield components and grain yield of Nerica 4 and 11. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design in split-plot arrangement replicated thrice. Two rice varieties (Nerica 4 and Nerica 11) formed main plots and phosphorus levels (0 kg P/ha, 25 kg P/ha, 50 kg P/ha and 75 kg P/ha) formed split plots. Data was collected on appropriate parameters between week 4 and 19 after sowing at intervals of three weeks. Results demonstrated that phosphorus levels significantly influenced the 1000-grain weight and number of panicles in the tested varieties. Additionally, Grain yield mean variation was observed, where highest grain yield of 0.988 tons per hectare was produced in Nerica 4 on 50 kg P/ha in season 2, while least grain yield of 0.831 tons per hectare was still produced in the same variety on control in season 1, thus 50 kg P/ha on Nerica 4 is recommended for rice farming in Mwea. The study would be used as a body of guidelines and information for judicial, responsible, and promotion of prescribed application of phosphates in Nerica rice farming at planting for realization of higher yields between the two Nerica varieties (Nerica 4 and 11) in Mwea and with like agro ecological areas.

Two field experiments were carried out at farmer’s field of Rajshahi and Chapainawabgonj under the Department of Agronomy, BINA during aman season of 2017 and 2018 consecutively to evaluate the drought tolerant rice varieties under different establishment methods in rain fed condition. First experiment (E1) was conducted to find out the performance of varieties and second experiment (E2) was to find out the suitability of method of transplanting/sowing in combination with short duration aman varieties. Different methods were as direct seeding, puddled and un-puddled transplanting and cultivars were used to cultivate BRRI dhan56, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-17 (except in second experiment) and Huttra (local cultivar). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The recommended fertilizer doses applied for the experiment were 80 kg N ha-1, 15 kg P ha-1, 50 kg K ha-1, 20 kg S ha-1 and 2 kg Zn ha-1. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were supplied from urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum and zinc sulphate monohydrate respectively while urea was applied in three equal splits. Among the cultivar Binadhan-17 produced statistically higher grain yield (5.62 t ha-1) at Chapainawabgonj. Among methods Binadhan-7 statistically higher grain yield 5.32 t ha-1 and 5.21 t ha-1, respectively) in puddle transplanting method both Chapainawabgonj and Rajshahi region during 2017. Among the cultivar Huttra (local) produced statistically higher grain yield (5.43 t ha-1) at Chapainawabgonj. Among methods, BRRI dhan56 statistically higher grain yield 6.37 t ha-1 and 6.19 t ha-1, respectively) in puddle transplanting method bothat Rajshahi and Chapainawabgonj during 2018. Overall results indicates that BRRI dhan56, Binadhan-7, Binadhan-17 performed better in puddled transplanting, Huttra (local) in direct seeding method in drought prone region of Bangladesh.

The field trial was carried out to evaluate the effect of timing nitrogen second dose fertilization on the grain yield and yield components of some improved maize varieties. The field experiments was conducted at the Institute for Agricultural Research IAR-ABU Research Farm Samaru – Zaria and Military Cantonment Farm Jaji – Nigeria. Treatments consist of three maize varieties (SAMMAZ 14, SAMMAZ 15 and SAMMAZ 16) and six timings of nitrogen second dose of fertilizer application. Data were recorded on grain yield, number of cobs /plant, number of grain /row, cob(ear) diameter, cob(ear) weight and 100 grain weight. Treatments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. SAMMAZ 16 produced significantly higher grain yield and recorded superior yield characters over SAMMAZ 14 and 15. The results further showed that time of nitrogen second dose application 6 WAS outperformed other timings evaluated at both location. The study identified. SAMMAZ 16 and time 6 WAS appeared to be the option for increased maize grain yield in the study area

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during November 2014 to April 2015 to investigate the effect of planting spacing and nitrogen levels on yield attributes and yield of maize cv. Khaibhutta. The experiment comprised three nitrogen levels viz. 50, 100 and 150 kg N ha-1 and five plant spacings viz. 75 cm × 25 cm, 75 cm × 20 cm, 50 cm × 25 cm, 50 cm × 20 cm and 100 cm × 20 cm. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Results revealed that nitrogen levels and plant spacing had significant effect on yield attributes and yield of Khaibhutta. The highest number of cobs plant-1, grains row-1, grain yield and stover yield were recorded with 150 kg N ha-1 followed by 100 kg N ha- 1and the lowest values were observed in 50 kg N ha-1. The highest number of cobs plant-1, grain rows cob-1, grains row-1, grains cob-1, 1000-grain weight, grain yield and harvest index were recorded at 75 cm × 25 cm spacing. In contrast, the closest spacing of 50 cm x 20 cm produced the lowest values of grain rows cob-1, grains row-1, grains cob-1, 1000-grain weight and grain yield. In case of interaction, the highest grain yield and harvest index were obtained at 75 cm × 25 cm spacing fertilized with 150 kg N ha-1. The lowest values of the above parameters were recorded in the closest spacing 50 cm × 20 cm with 50 kg N ha-1. From this study it may be concluded that maize (cv. Khaibhutta) can be cultivated at the spacing of 75 cm × 25 cm with 150 kg N ha-1 for appreciable grain yield.J. Bangladesh Agril. Univ. 14(1): 43-48, June 2016

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of spacing on grain yield and above ground biomass of cowpea. Methodology: A randomized complete block design was used. Field experiments were conducted. The study was conducted at Agriculture demonstration farm (Dakabaricha) and Yayo’s farm(Nagayo) and a private farm Demo farm. There were 18 treatment combinations consisting of three water harvesting techniques and two intra-row spacing. Results:Tied ridges with cross bars at 2.5m interval with the spacing of 60 x 20cm (W3 /S1) and open ridges with a spacing of 60 x 20cm (W3/S1) recorded the highest grain yield of 1408 kg/ha and 1296 kg/ha respectively. Unique  Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy:An assessment of adaptation of more cowpea genotypes at different environments across years is recommended. The investigation provided sufficiently evidence to continue with further studies.

Development of maize varieties tolerant to drought is very important to extensification program in dry maginal lands, especially outside Java. The research objective was to evaluate the agronomic performance, genetic variabilities and heritabilities of hybrid maize top crosses at Probolinggo and Gowa during dry season. A randomized complete block design with two replications was applied to each location. The combined analysis of variance showed that hybrid x location interaction was significant for harvesting date, corncob length, 1000 grain weight, and highly significant for flowering date, leaf curling, husk cover aspect, corncob aspect, plant harvested, weight of corncob harvested and grain yield. The genetic variance was considered broad for grain yield, weight of corncob harvested, shalling percentage, number of grain rows per corncob, and corncob aspect. Heritability values in combined location analysis were high for shalling percentage; medium for grain yield, weight of corncob harvested, shalling number of grain rows per corncob and corncob aspect; but for the other characteristics they were low. Low selection intensity (≥ 10%) can be applied in this generation (S2), but strong selection intensity (≥20%) can be applied in the next generation (≥S3).

The experiment was carried out during the period of June to November 2013 at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh with a view to examine the yield performance of some transplant aman rice varieties as influenced by different levels of nitrogen. The experiment consisted of four varieties viz. BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan56, BRRI dhan57 and four levels of N viz. 0, 46, 60 and 75 kg ha-1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Variety, levels of N and their interactions exerted significant influence on yield contributing characters and yield of transplant aman rice. Among the varieties, BRRI dhan52 produced the tallest plant (117.20 cm), highest number of effective tillers hill-1 (11.28), grains panicle-1 (121.5) and 1000-grain weight (23.65 g) whereas the lowest values of these parameters were produced by BRRI dhan57. Highest grain yield (5.69 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan52 followed by BRRI dhan49 (5.15 t ha-1) and the lowest one (4.25 t ha-1) was obtained from BRRI dhan57. In case of N, the tallest plant (111.70 cm), highest number of total tillers hill-1 (12.34), grains panicle-1 (133.6), 1000-grain weight (24.55 g) and grain yield (5.64 t ha-1) were obtained from 75 kg N ha-1 and the lowest values were obtained from control. BRRI dhan52 fertilized with 75 kg N ha-1 showed best performance with respect to all the parameters studied. The overall results suggest that BRRI dhan52 should be fertilized with 75 kg N ha-1 for getting higher yield under the agro-climatic condition of BAU.J. Bangladesh Agril.
