Water pollution in the near shore area has become a serious problem in coastal engineering. In such a situation, not only wave dissipation but also the functioning of water pollution control is expected from the coastal structure. Since breaking waves are accompanied by many bubbles and intense water turbulence, they promote the contact between organic matter and bacteria and between water and air. Therefore the water quality related to organic matter seems to change under the effect of breaking waves. In this study the variation of the dissolved oxygen and the organic matter near the surf zone were considered. First, a self purification model in the surf zone was developed. Second, the efficiency of breaking waves on reaeration and organic matter decomposition was estimated by an experiment in the laboratory flume and numerical simulation.

A spherical wave measurement buoy capable of detecting breaking waves has been designed and built. The buoy is 16 inches in diameter and houses a 9 degree of freedom inertial measurement unit (IMU). The orientation and acceleration of the buoy is continuously logged at frequencies up to 200 Hz providing a high fidelity description of the motion of the buoy as it is impacted by breaking waves. The buoy was deployed several times throughout the winter of 2013–2014. Both moored and free-drifting data were acquired in near-shore shoaling waves off the coast of Newport, OR. Almost 200 breaking waves of varying type and intensity were measured over the course of multiple deployments. The characteristic signature of spilling and plunging breakers was identified in the IMU data.

Dissolved oxygen as a basic project of water quality monitoring can reflect water quality changing in time. The author studied the changing law of DO in Baiyang Lake with water depth and time in autumn and winter for providing important data to research the aquatic organisms living and water pollution state, a theory gist for water pollution control of Baiyang Lake was given at the same time.

Soil pollution with plastics represents a great threat to plants, animals, but especially to humans, as a very small quantity of the plastic which is discarded daily is recycled or incinerated in waste facilities, much of it reaching landfills where their decomposition lasts up to 1000 years and during this time the toxic substances penetrate the soil and the water. If, initially, the pollution with plastics has been identified and recognized in the aquatic environment, recent studies show that plastics residues exist in huge quantities in the soil. The present study focuses on the analysis of factors that pollute soil, so the various studies that have been carried out claim that soil pollution with plastic is much higher and increases in an aggressive manner, being estimated to be 4 to 23 times higher than water pollution with plastics, and the accumulation of microplastics in the soil has a negative impact on soil biota. Thus, once the plastic material accumulates in the soil, it is assimilated to organic matter and the mineral substitutes of the soil and persists for several hundred years.

An estimated 80 % of all illnesses in developing countries is in one way or another related to water. In order to alleviate this most serious condition, the united Nations has initiated the “International Water Decade”, for which the estimated costs are $600 000 million, a sum which is far beyond any available means. By application of “low-cost technology” this sum could be reduced to $100 000 million which brings the objective within the reach of possibility. Details are given of the design and methods of construction of units which are best suited to the specific requirements and which would be simple, reliable and economical to operate. These can be constructed largely from local materials and by local labour. The need for appropriate training of both operators and the user population is stressed.

The paper takes the Second Songhua River as an object for research and selects Thomas's BOD-DO stable model as the initial structure on the basis of overall investigations and analyses on water pollution in every reach. In view of the characteristics of the river being located at the north, values k’1, k’2 and k’3 in dry season of winter were determined and calculated, and a series analyses have been made. The self-purification ability of the river and the total elimination amount of the main pollutants BOD5 were also calculated. In order to minimize the required cost, we distributed the cost to the main pollution sources, which are to be controlled. We firstly set a cost function of sewage treatment plant by series design and calculated the related cost parameters, then calculated two kinds of optimal distributing models of BOD5 elimination, which were a mathematical model of extreme value of conditions and a matrix mathematical model. Now they have been applied to the practical pollution control plan for the Second Songhua River.
