Abstract Background The network of intermediate filament proteins underlying the inner nuclear membrane forms the nuclear lamin. A- and B-type lamins are the major components of the nuclear lamina. Lamins function in many nuclear activities. The role of lamin A and transcription factors (NF-kB) as anti-apoptotic is well documented. Recently, lamin A has also been considered as a mechanosensor protein that is able to maintain nuclear integrity from mechanical insults. We aimed to verify how lamin A expression varies in healthy cuff cells and in those with different-sized tears where various mechanical stresses are present. Methods Forty-three patients with rotator cuff tear (RCT) [23M–20F, mean age (SD): 63.5 (6.1)] were enrolled. Tissue samples excised from the most medial point of tear margins were analyzed for lamin A expression by immunohistochemistry. Controls were represented by samples obtained by normal supraspinatus tendons excised from patients submitted to reverse shoulder prosthesis implant [8M–7F, mean age (SD): 67.9 (7.1)]. The intensity of staining was graded, and an H-score was assigned. Statistical analysis was performed. Results Our study revealed a moderate intensity of lamin A in the healthy cuff tendons, a higher expression of this protein in the small tears, and a significant decrease of lamin A with increasing tear size (p < 0.0001). Conclusions Our study emphasizes the importance of early repair of small RCTs since nuclear stability is maintained, and the cellular function is protected by lamin A overexpression. High re-tear of massive cuff repair could be due to cellular apoptosis and nuclear modifications induced by lamin A lack. Level of evidence III

Abstract Measurement of Z-boson production in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 8.16 TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} $$ s NN = 5.02 TeV is reported. It is performed in the dimuon decay channel, through the detection of muons with pseudorapidity −4 < ημ< −2.5 and transverse momentum $$ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mu } $$ p T μ > 20 GeV/c in the laboratory frame. The invariant yield and nuclear modification factor are measured for opposite-sign dimuons with invariant mass 60 < mμμ< 120 GeV/c2 and rapidity 2.5 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < 4. They are presented as a function of rapidity and, for the Pb-Pb collisions, of centrality as well. The results are compared with theoretical calculations, both with and without nuclear modifications to the Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). In p-Pb collisions the center-of-mass frame is boosted with respect to the laboratory frame, and the measurements cover the backward (−4.46 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < −2.96) and forward (2.03 <$$ {y}_{\mathrm{cms}}^{\mu \mu} $$ y cms μμ < 3.53) rapidity regions. For the p-Pb collisions, the results are consistent within experimental and theoretical uncertainties with calculations that include both free-nucleon and nuclear-modified PDFs. For the Pb-Pb collisions, a 3.4σ deviation is seen in the integrated yield between the data and calculations based on the free-nucleon PDFs, while good agreement is found once nuclear modifications are considered.

Abstract We present a model-independent determination of the nuclear parton distribution functions (nPDFs) using machine learning methods and Monte Carlo techniques based on the NNPDF framework. The neutral-current deep-inelastic nuclear structure functions used in our previous analysis, nNNPDF1.0, are complemented by inclusive and charm-tagged cross-sections from charged-current scattering. Furthermore, we include all available measurements of W and Z leptonic rapidity distributions in proton-lead collisions from ATLAS and CMS at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 5.02 TeV and 8.16 TeV. The resulting nPDF determination, nNNPDF2.0, achieves a good description of all datasets. In addition to quantifying the nuclear modifications affecting individual quarks and antiquarks, we examine the implications for strangeness, assess the role that the momentum and valence sum rules play in nPDF extractions, and present predictions for representative phenomenological applications. Our results, made available via the LHAPDF library, highlight the potential of high-energy collider measurements to probe nuclear dynamics in a robust manner.

Abstract We investigate the transverse momentum dependence of valence and sea quark distribution functions of light asymmetric nuclei ($$^{3}He$$3He and $$^{7}Li$$7Li). To this end, we first calculate the valence and sea distributions of these nuclei applying a parametrization method in which the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of nucleus are related to those of free nucleon via a weight function that contains the nuclear modifications. Then we obtain the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent (TMD) PDFs of the nucleus using the covariant parton model (CPM) approach. We also compute the valence and sea quark distributions ratios of $$^{3}He$$3He and $$^{7}Li$$7Li to those of deuteron and present the results with respect to x (Bjorken variable) at fixed values of transverse momentum. It is found that these ratios shift to the larger values of x by increasing the transverse momentum value as expected and they are not transverse momentum dependent in large x region.
