On 31 July 2019, a Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans) was observed consuming a Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus) at Meux Creek, Neustadt, Ontario. The bat was likely roosting at a nearby undercut bank when it was predated by the frog, which required nearly 90 min to consume its prey. This is the first record of a Green Frog consuming a bat species in Canada.

The Early Pleistocene site of Pietrafitta (central Italy) produced a rich vertebrate assemblage from the Late Villafranchian Land Mammal Age (late MN18). Geological and paleobotanical data from Pietrafitta indicate a lacustrine environment, surrounded by a humid deciduous broadleaved forest with a temperate climate. The vertebrate assemblage consists of at least 40 taxa including actinopterygians, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Here, we concentrate on the ichthyofaunal and herpetofaunal remains. The ichthyofauna includes Barbus Cuvier and Cloquet, 1816, Scardinius Bonaparte, 1837, aff. Squalius Cuvier, 1817, and Tinca Cuvier, 1817. The two anuran genera are the large-sized alytid frog Latonia Meyer, 1843 and the “green frog” Pelophylax Fitzinger, 1843. Three snake precloacal vertebrae were recognized, one attributed to Colubrines indet., another one to ­Natrix sp. Laurenti, 1768, and the largest and most complete vertebra is referred to the genus Vipera s.l. Laurenti, 1768 (cf. gr. “Oriental vipers”). The chelonian fossils, including some complete carapaces and plastrals, are attributed to the European pond turtle (Emys gr. Orbicularis Linnaeus, 1758) and Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni Gmelin, 1789).

Abstract Background Gabonese flora abounds in a significant reserve of plants in medical matter. Thus, medicinal plants occupy a significant place in African pharmacopeia. Aim of this work was to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic properties of extracts of Guibourtia tessmanii (Harms) J. Léonard. Methods The test for sensitivity to microorganisms was performed by the diffusion method, while the MICs and MBCs were evaluated by the microdilution technique. Antioxidant tests were performed by scavenging the DPPH and ABTS radicals. Anti-inflammatory activity was determined by protein denaturing and membrane stabilization methods. The cytotoxicity was evaluated on the tadpoles of the green frog. Results The antibacterial activity shows that the Gt F2 fraction and the water-acetone extract produced the greatest inhibitions. The water, water-ethanol and water-acetone extracts exhibited bactericidal effects on the majority of bacteria. In the case of trapping of the DPPH radical, the IC50 values varied from 6.92 ± 0.48 to 16.64 ± 0.20 μg/mL. For the decolouration of ABTS, oxidation was mainly inhibited by the water-acetetone, water-ethanol extracts and some fractions. The water and water-acetone extracts showed good inhibition of denaturation. The hemolysis test confirmed the good activities of the extracts. The lethal test showed that the LC50 drops from 171.37 ± 9.25 to 58.25 ± 7.21 μg/mL after 24 and 96 h of exposure. In tadpoles exposed to 7.81 μg / mL of extracts, the first mortalities (12.5%) were observed on the second day of exposure. From the ninth day, the mortality rate increased (25%) until the 16th day. Conclusion Our results show that Guibourtia tessmanii may be a promising product for the isolations of molecules responsible for biological activities.

A new species of green frog of the genus Euphlyctis Fitzinger, 1843 is described from West Bengal, a state of eastern India. A robust frog, SVL of male 86mm and that of female 132mm. The species is diagnosed by the presence of following characters: green dorsum and female with a greenish white mid-dorsal line, tibiotarsal articulation reaches eye, male with two vocal sac openings at the junction of jaw, female is larger than male though body parameters is proportionately longer in male, nostril snout length 3.45% of SVL, nostril much closer to snout tip than eye, units of hind limb i. e. thigh, shank and foot are almost equal in length, relative length of finger: II < IV < I < III. The new species is compared with existing eight species of the genus Euphlyctis.

A molecular multiplex PCR method for identification of East European green frog species (Pelophylax ridibundus, P. cf. bedriagae and P. lessonae) and their hybrids was developed. This simple and rapid method can be used for identification of species-specific mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. The method is based on species-specific differences in primary structure of the subunit 1 of the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase gene (COI) and the intron-1 of the nuclear serum albumin gene (SAI-1). Based on the method, we analyzed numerous individuals of these species and their hybrids from East European Plain, the Crimea, the Caucasus, the Ural, as well as introduced populations from Western Siberia and the Kamchatka. In all cases, identification of species performed by use of the multiplex PCR method coincided with results of study of primary nucleotide sequences.
