In this brief review, we give an introduction to selected colloidal and microfluidic nematic microstructures, as enabled by the inherent anisotropy and microscopic orientational ordering in complex liquid crystalline materials. We give a brief overview of the mesoscopic theory, for equilibrium and dynamics, of nematic fluids, that provides the framework for understanding, characterization, and even prediction of such microstructures, with particular comment also on the role of topology and topological defects. Three types of nematic microstructures are highlighted: stable or metastable structures in nematic colloids based on spherical colloidal particles, stationary nematic microfluidic structures, and ferromagnetic liquid crystal structures based on magnetic colloidal particles. Finally, this paper is in honor of Noel A. Clark, as one of the world pioneers that helped to shape this field of complex and functional soft matter, contributing at different levels to works of various groups worldwide, including ours.

AbstractOrdering of mobile defects in functional materials can give rise to fundamentally new phases possessing ferroic and multiferroic functionalities. Here we develop the Landau theory for strain induced ordering of defects (e.g. oxygen vacancies) in thin oxide films, considering both the ordering and wavelength of possible instabilities. Using derived analytical expressions for the energies of various defect-ordered states, we calculated and analyzed phase diagrams dependence on the film-substrate mismatch strain, concentration of defects, and Vegard coefficients. Obtained results open possibilities to create and control superstructures of ordered defects in thin oxide films by selecting the appropriate substrate and defect concentration.

Mesoscopic theory is applied to show the nanoparticles migration through a porous 3D cavity. Various amounts of Lorentz forces, buoyancy and Darcy number on working fluid behavior are considered and depicted. Al2O3-H2O is selected including Brownian motion effect. Outputs are illustrated in views of streamlines, isokinetic and isotherms contours. Outputs display that the enhancing magnetic forces lead to rise in conduction mode. Nu_ave augments with the decrease in Lorentz forces while it improves for stronger Lorentz forces.

Internal and mesoscopic variables differ from each other fundamentally: both are state space variables, but mesoscopic variables are additional equipped with a distribution function introducing a statistical item into consideration which is missing in connection with internal variables. Thus, the alignment tensor of liquid crystal theory can be introduced as an internal variable or as one generated by a mesoscopic background using the microscopic director as mesoscopic variable. Because the mesoscopic variable is part of the state space, the corresponding balance equations change into mesoscopic balances, and additionally an evolution equation of the mesoscopic distribution function appears. The flexibility of the mesoscopic concept is not only demonstrated for liquid crystals, but is also discussed for dipolar media and flexible fibers.
