ABSTRACT The strain rate dependence of uncured rubber is investigated through a series of tensile tests (monotonic, multistep relaxation, cyclic creep tests) at different strain rates. In addition, loading/unloading tests in which the strain rate is varied every cycle are carried out to observe their dependence on the deformation history. A strain rate–dependent viscoelastic–viscoplastic constitutive model is proposed with the nonlinear viscosity and process-dependent recovery properties observed in the test results. Those properties are implemented by introducing evolution equations for additional internal variables. The identified material parameters capture the experiments qualitatively well. The proposed model is also evaluated by finite element simulations of the building process of a tire, followed by the in-molding.

Cell cycle and its progression play a crucial role in the life of all living organisms, in tissues and organs of animals and humans, and therefore are the subject of intense study by scientists in various fields of biomedicine, bioengineering and biotechnology. Effective and predictive simulation models can offer new development opportunities in such fields. In the present paper a comprehensive mathematical model for simulating the cell cycle progression in batch systems is proposed. The model includes a structured population balance with two internal variables (i.e., cell volume and age) that properly describes cell cycle evolution through the various stages that a cell of an entire population undergoes as it grows and divides. The rate of transitions between two subsequent phases of the cell cycle are obtained by considering a detailed biochemical model which simulates the series of complex events that take place during cell growth and its division. The model capability for simulating the effect of various seeding conditions and the adding of few substances during in vitro tests, is discussed by considering specific cases of interest in tissue engineering and biomedicine.

In this paper an isotropic hardening elastoplastic constitutive model for structured soils is applied to the simulation of a standard CPTu test in a saturated soft structured clay. To allow for the extreme deformations experienced by the soil during the penetration process, the model is formulated in a fully geometric non-linear setting, based on: i) the multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient into an elastic and a plastic part; and, ii) on the existence of a free energy function to define the elastic behaviour of the soil. The model is equipped with two bonding-related internal variables which provide a macroscopic description of the effects of clay structure. Suitable hardening laws are employed to describe the structure degradation associated to plastic deformations. The strain-softening associated to bond degradation usually leads to strain localization and consequent formation of shear bands, whose thickness is dependent on the characteristics of the microstructure (e.g, the average grain size). Standard local constitutive models are incapable of correctly capturing this phenomenon due to the lack of an internal length scale. To overcome this limitation, the model is framed using a non-local approach by adopting volume averaged values for the internal state variables. The size of the neighbourhood over which the averaging is performed (characteristic length) is a material constant related to the microstructure which controls the shear band thickness. This extension of the model has proven effective in regularizing the pathological mesh dependence of classical finite element solutions in the post-localization regime. The results of numerical simulations, conducted for different soil permeabilities and bond strengths, show that the model captures the development of plastic deformations induced by the advancement of the cone tip; the destructuration of the clay associated with such plastic deformations; the space and time evolution of pore water pressure as the cone tip advances. The possibility of modelling the CPTu tests in a rational and computationally efficient way opens a promising new perspective for their interpretation in geotechnical site investigations.

The review deals with a novel approach (MNEQT) to nonequilibrium thermodynamics (NEQT) that is based on the concept of internal equilibrium (IEQ) in an enlarged state space SZ involving internal variables as additional state variables. The IEQ macrostates are unique in SZ and have no memory just as EQ macrostates are in the EQ state space SX⊂SZ. The approach provides a clear strategy to identify the internal variables for any model through several examples. The MNEQT deals directly with system-intrinsic quantities, which are very useful as they fully describe irreversibility. Because of this, MNEQT solves a long-standing problem in NEQT of identifying a unique global temperature T of a system, thus fulfilling Planck’s dream of a global temperature for any system, even if it is not uniform such as when it is driven between two heat baths; T has the conventional interpretation of satisfying the Clausius statement that the exchange macroheatdeQflows from hot to cold, and other sensible criteria expected of a temperature. The concept of the generalized macroheat dQ=deQ+diQ converts the Clausius inequality dS≥deQ/T0 for a system in a medium at temperature T0 into the Clausius equalitydS≡dQ/T, which also covers macrostates with memory, and follows from the extensivity property. The equality also holds for a NEQ isolated system. The novel approach is extremely useful as it also works when no internal state variables are used to study nonunique macrostates in the EQ state space SX at the expense of explicit time dependence in the entropy that gives rise to memory effects. To show the usefulness of the novel approach, we give several examples such as irreversible Carnot cycle, friction and Brownian motion, the free expansion, etc.

Abstract The cluster variation method (CVM) is one of the thermodynamic models used to calculate phase diagrams considering short range order (SRO). This method predicts the SRO values through internal variables referred to as correlation functions (CFs), accurately up to the cluster chosen in modeling the system. Determination of these CFs at each thermodynamic state of the system requires solving a set of nonlinear equations using numerical methods. In this communication, a neural network model is proposed to predict the values of the CFs. This network is trained for the BCC phase under tetrahedron approximation for both ordering and phase separating systems. The results show that the network can predict the values of the CFs accurately and thereby Helmholtz energy and the phase diagram with significantly less computational burden than that of conventional methods used.

Indonesia is the largest archipelago country in the world accounting for over 17,000 islands. The West Java Province is one of the country’s 34 provinces and is an important fisheries production centre, owing to its abundance of fish resources. This annual catch of marine life and fish in this area is the source of livelihood of this area’s coastal communities. The fish processing business in West Java is done mostly by women. Any support to the household fish processing business improves the livelihood of local people, benefits the income of the coastal communities and the economy of Indonesia. A simple model of empowerment has been constructed that can be applied to these fishing communities to help them. By identifying external and internal variables, an analysis structural equation model (SEM) capable of simplifying multivariate data to empower home-based fish processors has been formulated. This research can strengthen the theory of community empowerment, pointing out the importance of extension programmes and formulating future strategies, especially in the field of fisheries.

Abstract We present a constitutive model for particle-binder composites that accounts for finite-deformation kinematics, nonlinear elasto-plasticity without apparent yield, cyclic hysteresis, and progressive stress-softening before the attainment of stable cyclic response. The model is based on deformation mechanisms experimentally observed during quasi-static monotonic and cyclic compression of mock Plastic-Bonded Explosives (PBX) at large strain. An additive decomposition of strain energy into elastic and inelastic parts is assumed, where the elastic response is modeled using Ogden hyperelasticity while the inelastic response is described using yield-surface-free endochronic plasticity based on the concepts of internal variables and of evolution or rate equations. Stress-softening is modeled using two approaches; a discontinuous isotropic damage model to appropriately describe the softening in the overall loading-unloading response, and a material scale function to describe the progressive cyclic softening until cyclic stabilization. A nonlinear multivariate optimization procedure is developed to estimate the elasto-plastic model parameters from nominal stress-strain experimental compression data. Finally, a correlation between model parameters and the unique stress-strain response of mock PBX specimens with differing concentrations of aluminum is identified, thus establishing a relationship between model parameters and material composition.

Only a successful and consistent banking sector can play the role of financial intermediary in the economy properly. As an intermediary in the modern economy, the bank must be profitable. The general aim of this study focuses on analyzing the factors that influence the profitability of private and public commercial banks in Tanzania. By the use of annual time series internal and external data for the period 2013 to 2019, and a quantitative approach methodology using GMM technique analysis of the impact of the selected determinants was made. The results from bank-internal variables comprised of four statistically significant variables which are capital adequacy, asset quality, loan composition, and cost efficiency while the rest is insignificant. Likewise, the macro-economic determining factors (growth domestic product (GDP) and inflation rate) were found to be non-significant. The empirical results have shown that profitability is more explained by bank-specific determinants that are directly controlled by the management than the macroeconomic factor variables which are beyond the reach of management control.
