This article explores how Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Sunday in the Park with George conveys Seurat’s scientific influences, how the show’s Chromolume engages with Seurat and his modernist legacy, and how the 1984 and 2017 Chromolume designs reflect Seurat’s work and legacy. Using original oral history interviews, this article compares the 1984 and 2017 Broadway Chromolume designs to explore how production decisions inform the show’s engagement with pointillism, Seurat and colour theory. By analysing Sunday, this article sets out to provide a case study highlighting how science and technology inform and influence the book, music and theatrical design of a major American musical.

New energy vehicles have a significant advantage in energy saving and environmental pollution reduction in the transportation industry; however, they are still at a disadvantage in the market competition. The Chinese government has introduced lots of policy measures to promote the mass adoption of new energy vehicles (NEVs), specifically the dual credit policy. Moreover, consumer’s preferences are vital factors in their purchase decision making. This study focuses on the production decisions of automobile manufacturers under the decentralized and centralized supply chain, considering the factors of both consumer preferences and dual credit policy. First, under the centralized decision mode, higher demand drives the manufacturer to expand production; however, retailers’ profits are harmed. With the increase in consumers’ environmental preference and cognition of endurance ability, market pricing and demand increase under the decentralized decision mode. The cross effects of preferences bring more profits for manufacturers and retailers. Second, the difference in prices and profits widens, under the two decision modes, as increases in consumer preferences’ value. When consumers have higher environmental preferences, manufacturers and retailers should increase the new energy vehicle pricing. Otherwise, they should decrease pricing to increase the market penetration ratio. In addition, the impacts of one preference on the profit difference are related to the other preference.

AbstractCap and trade mechanisms enjoy increasing importance in environmental legislations worldwide. One of the important aspects of designing cap and trade mechanisms is the possibility of authorities to grant emission permits for free. Unlike analyzed in the seminal contributions on cap and trade systems, in reality free allocations are not made lump sum, but are updated contingent on firms’ actions, i.e., contingent on production decisions and contingent on facilities entering the market or retiring (see IEA, https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/content/publication/b7d0842b-en, 2020). As it has already been shown in the literature, such updating yields distorted production decisions of firms (see e.g., Böhringer and Lange in Eur Econ Rev 49(8):2041–2055, 2005, Mackenzie et al. in Environ Resour Econ 39(3):265–282, 2008, or Damon et al. in Rev Environ Econ Policy 13(1):23–42, 2019). The impact of updating on firms’ investment and retiring decisions and the resulting technology mix has received much less attention up to now, however. It is the purpose of the present article to shed light on this aspect and to study the impact of a cap and trade mechanism not only on firms’ output decisions, but also on their investment incentives in different technologies and to analyze the optimal design of emission trading systems in such an environment.
