In this article theoretical analysis of the signal thresholding effects on the accuracy of cross-correlation based sound source direction of arrival estimation was presented. The aim of the investigation was to determine the theoretical limits and challenges of the accuracy of the localization of a speaker within an acoustic enclosure by cross-correlation of two microphone signals and to offer means to increase the accuracy of sound source direction of arrival estimation via selection of audio frames based on the time lag estimation realiability measure. For the investigation, audio material from an openly accessible database was used. Presented are the methods for obtaining various features of the microphone signal frames, signal amplitude to minimum error amplitude calculation and experimentation with threshold-based audio frame selection.

Most commercial prosthetic hands lack closed-loop feedback, thus, a lot of research has been focusing on implementing sensory feedback systems to provide the user with sensory information during activities of daily living. This study evaluates the possibilities of using a microphone and electrotactile feedback to identify different textures. A condenser microphone was used as a sensor to detect the friction sound generated from the contact between different textures and the microphone. The generated signal was processed to provide a characteristic electrical stimulation presented to the participants. The main goal of the processing was to derive a continuous and intuitive transfer function between the microphone signal and stimulation frequency. Twelve able-bodied volunteers participated in the study, in which they were asked to identify the stroked texture (among four used in this study: Felt, sponge, silicone rubber, and string mesh) using only electrotactile feedback. The experiments were done in three phases: 1) Training, 2) with-feedback, 3) without-feedback. Each texture was stroked 20 times each during all three phases. The results show that the participants were able to differentiate between different textures, with a median accuracy of 85%, by using only electrotactile feedback with the stimulation frequency being the only variable parameter.

The transfer function-generalized sidelobe canceller (TF-GSC) is one of the most popular structures for the adaptive beamformer used in multi-channel speech enhancement. Although the TF-GSC has shown decent performance, a certain amount of steering error is inevitable, which causes leakage of speech components through the blocking matrix (BM) and distortion in the fixed beamformer (FBF) output. In this paper, we propose to suppress the leaked signal in the output of the BM and restore the desired signal in the FBF output of the TF-GSC. To reduce the risk of attenuating speech in the adaptive noise canceller (ANC), the speech component in the output of the BM is suppressed by applying a gain function similar to the square-root Wiener filter, assuming that a certain portion of the desired speech should be leaked into the BM output. Additionally, we propose to restore the attenuated desired signal in the FBF output by adding some of the microphone signal components back, depending on how microphone signals are related to the FBF and BM outputs. The experimental results showed that the proposed TF-GSC outperformed conventional TF-GSC in terms of the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) scores under various noise conditions and the direction of arrivals for the desired and interfering sources.

Background Automated sound recorders are a popular sampling tool in ecology. However, the microphones themselves received little attention so far, and specifications that determine the recordings’ sound quality are seldom mentioned. Here, we demonstrate the importance of microphone signal-to-noise ratio for sampling sonant animals. Methods We tested 12 different microphone models in the field and measured their signal-to-noise ratios and detection ranges. We also measured the vocalisation activity of birds and bats that they recorded, the bird species richness, the bat call types richness, as well as the performance of automated detection of bird and bat calls. We tested the relationship of each one of these measures with signal-to-noise ratio in statistical models. Results Microphone signal-to-noise ratio positively affects the sound detection space areas, which increased by a factor of 1.7 for audible sound, and 10 for ultrasound, from the lowest to the highest signal-to-noise ratio microphone. Consequently, the sampled vocalisation activity increased by a factor of 1.6 for birds, and 9.7 for bats. Correspondingly, the species pool of birds and bats could not be completely detected by the microphones with lower signal-to-noise ratio. The performance of automated detection of bird and bat calls, as measured by its precision and recall, increased significantly with microphone signal-to-noise ratio. Discussion Microphone signal-to-noise ratio is a crucial characteristic of a sound recording system, positively affecting the acoustic sampling performance of birds and bats. It should be maximised by choosing appropriate microphones, and be quantified independently, especially in the ultrasound range.
