<p>This nursing study seeks to understand the experience of one group of people with chronic renal failure using renal replacement therapy, Pakeha men living on home haemodialysis. It is based on the assumptions that people living on dialysis have distinctive experiences that are characterized by common concerns reflecting their shared position as subjects of renal illness and therapy, but that these are not easy to discern because they are obscured by the professional viewpoint that is dominant in the renal setting. In order to understand the experience of people living on dialysis this study develops a critical interpretive approach, seeking the participant's own interpretation of their individual experiences, but then reinterpreting them from a critical standpoint, recognizing that they can only be adequately understood by contextualizing them, in order to discern the common perspective underlying them in contrast to the dominant professional viewpoint in the renal setting. Using some ideas derived from the thought of Michel Foucault this study develops a critical nursing view of the renal setting, as a specialized healthcare context that is constituted by several interrelated discourses, primarily the dominant professional discourse, but also by several other discourses, in particular a client discourse that is a response to the dominant discourse. The different discourses reflect contrasting perspectives based on the different positions of various groups within the renal context. The study presents accounts, derived from interviews, of the experience of six Pakeha men living on home haemodialysis. Reflecting on these accounts as a set, by contextualizing them in terms of the critical nursing view of the renal setting, I outline four concerns of Pakeha men living on home haemodialysis. Together these make up the renal client discourse that models the distinctive perspective from their position within the renal context, underlying each of their individual accounts of their experience of illness and therapy. These concerns include symptoms from chronic renal failure and dialysis, limitations resulting from the negotiation of the therapeutic regime into their lifestyle, their sense of ongoingness and uncertainty of living on dialysis, and the altered interrelationship between autonomy and dependence inherent in living on dialysis. The study suggests that the individual accounts can be understood as resulting from the interaction of the various dimensions of their own personal social locations, including their gender and ethnicity, with the concerns of client discourse, reflecting their common position as people living on dialysis. One important implication of this understanding is that the role of nursing in the renal setting can be articulated as a response to the experience of the person living on dialysis. The nurse can support the renal client in seeking to integrate the requirements of the therapeutic regime, reflecting the dominant discourse, into their personal situation, reflecting the interaction of their own personal location with their position as a person living on dialysis, outlined in the client discourse.</p>

This paper focuses on contributing to the reflection on the importance of providing opportunities to foster meaningful and creative connections in higher education. In a context of growing plurality, heterogeneity and diversity of backgrounds, languages, cultures, identities, roles, and purpose influences the sociocultural relations and professional interactions that occur and are formed within higher education communities of knowledge and learning, which are explored from the perspective of music education. A narrative approach on participant’s views about their participation in an elective music program was developed inside the framework of informal education. Issues that were discussed the most across the datasets by participants individual accounts are expressed through themes that fall into three broad areas: previous musical experiences, significant influences for music participation, and perceptions of the participation in the music program. Results suggest that the informal music program provided participants with a context for a safe emotional, social, cultural, and musical experience, and thus heterogeneity and diversity are seen as enriching factors. Some considerations are made on the ways through which music can help to foster connections and sense of humanity in higher education. This provides some insights into the relevance of fostering musical participation as part of the cultural responsibility of higher education institutions for participants.

Type material of 12 mammal taxa originally proposed as species or subspecies are housed in the former Macleay Museum (now Macleay Collections, Chau Chak Wing Museum), University of Sydney and consist of seven holotypes and 12 syntypes. These were published from 1875 to 1887, five by N.N. Miklouho-Maclay and seven by E.P. Ramsay, of which six are currently considered valid taxa. Six type specimens are identified in the Collection for the first time. This includes rediscovery of the holotype skull of the New Guinean forest wallaby Dorcopsis chalmersii Miklouho-Maclay not reported since its description in 1884, a likely syntype of the bandicoot Perameles macroura torosa Ramsay, and three additional syntypes of the flying fox Pteropus (Epomops?) epularius Ramsay. The holotype of the dasyurid Antechinus (Podabrus) froggatti Ramsay, housed at the Australian Museum since before 1959, is also discussed. Limited specimen data currently prevents validation of an additional six specimens identified here as suspected syntypes of four further names: the macropodoids Halmaturus mastersii Krefft, Halmaturus crassipes Ramsay and Hypsiprymnodon moschatus Ramsay, and the bandicoot Perameles moresbyensis Ramsay. Individual accounts are given for a total of 21 proposed names. Type material of four of these remain unlocated in world collections and it is not known if they were ever in the Macleay Collections: the bandicoot Brachymelis garagassi Miklouho-Maclay, 1884; the wallaby Macropus tibol Miklouho-Maclay, 1885; the cuscus Cuscus chrysorrhous var. goldiei Ramsay and the giant rat Hapalotis papuanus Ramsay. The nomenclatural status of the possum Phalangista pinnata Ramsay, 1877, a possible nomen nudum, is also discussed. No nomenclatural actions are taken in this paper.

This chapter explores the ways in which individuals narrated, structured, and recalled their own wartime experiences, and those of their family. The first section analyses the military memoirs of two Royalist commanders, Sir Hugh Cholmley and Sir Richard Grenville. The second and third sections draw on the war stories contained in the petitions of maimed Parliamentarian soldiers and war widows. It argues that, in all three cases, subjects were principally concerned with curating an account of their wartime experiences that would reconcile the events of the past with their present identity, a task that combined partial, partisan remembering with a healthy dose of selective amnesia. It also considers the extent to which individual accounts were coloured by public memory, and demonstrates that though historians often make a conceptual distinction between ‘public’ and ‘private’ recollection, the boundary between these two categories was highly porous.

AbstractIn this paper I explore how intellectual humility manifests in mathematical practices. To do this I employ accounts of this virtue as developed by virtue epistemologists in three case studies of mathematical activity. As a contribution to a Topical Collection on virtue theory of mathematical practices this paper explores in how far existing virtue-theoretic frameworks can be applied to a philosophical analysis of mathematical practices. I argue that the individual accounts of intellectual humility are successful at tracking some manifestations of this virtue in mathematical practices and fail to track others. There are two upshots to this. First, the accounts of the intellectual virtues provided by virtue epistemologists are insightful for the development of a virtue theory of mathematical practices but require adjustments in some cases. Second, the case studies reveal dimensions of intellectual humility virtue epistemologists have thus far overlooked in their theoretical reflections.

BackgroundMethodsIt draws on a series of 20 interviews with key protagonists and employs a Bakhtinian approach to narrative analysis, which explores the interplay between individual accounts and larger sociocultural themes.ResultsConclusionsIt concludes that the success in managing the complexity of this project can largely be attributed to a systems leader approach that draws on the power of an agile network to be replenished and redeployed against rapidly evolving strategic objectives. This effectively constitutes a parallel operating structure, which is devoted to the design and implementation of strategy based on a continual assessment of the organisation and serves to strengthen rather than supersede established hierarchical structures of authority.

Across journalism, numbers and non-numbers are used in conjunction with each other in the process of storytelling. When literature within journalism studies examines this relationship, it tends to focus on how numbers contextualise the specific anecdote or how numbers provide scale to individual accounts. Both explanations rest on a specific-general paradigm that underpins much of the way academics research and theorise the topic. In this article, I reconceptualise the relationship between the quantitative and the qualitative through two metaphors that emerged during my interviews with journalists regarding their coverage of humanitarian crises. In doing so, I set my study within the long history of using metaphors in journalism studies. First, I point to the metaphor of colouring to outline how we can reimagine storytelling as the combination of data that provides form and shape and the personal that colours this structure. Second, I explore the metaphor of anchoring to appreciate the journalistic practice of connecting subjective personal accounts with the ontological solidity of data. I conclude by highlighting the differences between these two metaphors and the specific-general paradigm, whilst also pointing to the ramifications of my article for journalism studies and mediated ethics.
