The discourse of slimming diets in contemporary Italian women's press. Qualitative analysis. Based on a corpus of articles extracted from contemporary Italian female magazines (2021) Donna Moderna and Grazia, this paper examines the nature of discourse of slimming diet. It is shown that the discourse has changed compared to the study conducted on the material from 2005-2008. Altogether 29 monthly issues have been analyzed. Currently emerging corpus does not contain many persuasive techniques related to emotions (Aristotle's pathos), the credibility of provided advice is enhanced mostly by arguments from authority (ethos). The innovation thus lies in the references to currently important societal topics, such as ecology (a manifestation of linguistic fashion). The research based on a rhetorical tools and analysis of press discourse shows that the topic of weight loss is treated nowadays with greater awareness and is being transferred to the pages of the men's press, in women's magazines its place is taken by e.g., cosmetic-surgical, or ecologic discourse. The conclusions from own research have been preceded by a review of theoretical issues in the field of a modern concept of a slimming diet, myth of beauty, development of the press in Italy, the role of cuisine and food in the Italian women's press.

Chapter 2 shows how, in preaching, the self comes to be mediated by the whole Christ. The insight about memory and Christ from the Confessions grows into a full-fledged Christological reality wherein the “whole Christ” becomes a route to God. This chapter, especially by attention to exegesis and rhetorical tools in addition to his philosophical and theological interlocutors, shows the development of Augustine’s communal construct called the whole Christ, or totus Christus. The chapter tracks Augustine’s developing understanding of Christ’s mediation through the incarnation, passion, and ascension. In his mature preaching, Augustine describes ongoing Christological mediation as transfiguring human persons into Christ. Chapter 2 concludes the first part of the book, “The Beginning of Memory,” and sets up the method of the middle portion of the book.

A novel and original take on the history of popular science showcases that making science accessible to the public has been part of scientific activity since ancient times. Under this lens, and through twenty-one case studies, current trends such as sci-art and virtual technology can be seen as part of a continuum that was already present in the use of aesthetic and rhetorical tools by the ancient Greeks. Thanks to a careful curation of the collection of texts, this volume as a whole offers more than the sum of its parts (chapters).

This study aims to analyze the form of rhetorical tools in a collection of poems Masih Ingatkah Kau Jalan Pulang by Sapardi Djoko Damono and Rintik Sedu. Data analysis was carried out in a descriptive-qualitative manner consisting of words, phrases, or sentences in poetry. The results of the research are in the form of rhetorical means, consisting of simile, metaphor, personification, and synecdoche display, repetition structure manipulation, parallelism, polysyndeton, asyndeton, hyperbole, rhetoric, and climax, as well as images of sight, hearing, smell, touch, and motion. The function of rhetoric means is to intensify, enliven, provide clarity of imaginary images, aesthetically, emphasize, rhetorically, generate more effective associations of meaning, make it concrete, and make it easier to imagine. The dominant use of rhetorical means, in structural manipulation, is parallelism and repetition, in images are images of motion, sight, and hearing, in a presentation are metaphors and personifications. The learning design in SMP must be student-centered, paying attention to individual differences and selecting the right learning model.

Abstract This paper examines the use of antithesis and paradox in the Epistle to Diognetus. The text employs these rhetorico-philosophical techniques in order to provoke interest in readers, whether pagan or Christian, and lure them toward deeper inquiry and understanding of the truths the author thinks Christianity teaches. That is, the anticipated effects of antithesis and paradox as classical rhetorical tools, as described by ancient rhetoricians and philosophers, promotes the overall protreptic goal of the text. The antitheses capture the audience’s attention, while the pervasive use of paradoxical language and reasoning guides it toward deeper inquiry about Christianity. Not only are Christian existence and God’s plan of salvation paradoxical, but the author’s very understanding of how to comprehend these paradoxes contradicts the expectations created by classical philosophical notions of paradox.

For a long time, classical and evidential apologetics have been firmly established as a way of defending the Christian faith. However, postmodernism appears to criticize the use of absolute verification tools for faith claims. Nevertheless, James K.A. Smith and Alister McGrath see postmodernism as friend rather than foe, opportunity rather than challenge. Therefore, paying attention to important criticisms of the spirit of postmodernism will actually help the church to answer the demands of postmodernism itself. This article proposes an imaginative apologetics approach as a solution to answer this criticism. In contrast to classical/evidential apologetics, this apologetics tends to use imagination more than before in efforts to account for the Christian faith. When apologetics accepts dry accusations and seems to override existential aspects that actually dwell in humans, imaginative apologetics can be a proposed solution to avoid these accusations. Two implications emerge from this reasoning. First, in apologetic dialogues, an apologist must use more imaginative rhetorical tools. Second, the church must help listeners get an imaginative presentation of what it’s like to live as a Christian, by presenting them with stories of everyday Christian life. Thus, instead of the church using apologetics, the church is apologetics itself.

This chapter considers the approach to traditional philosophical sources of intellectual property (IP). It argues that philosophical questioning is characterized by specific and unique features that distinguish it from all other forms of knowledge, including scientific knowledge. It then shows how philosophical concepts—i.e. concepts coined in the course of philosophical questioning—translate in other domains of knowledge, such as jurisprudence, where they eventually decay into empty rhetorical tools devoid of questioning force. The current ‘intellectual property debate’ illustrates this point. In this connection, the chapter questions how intellectual property concepts can be reconstructed in their original philosophical dimension. By way of example, the interpretation of three great philosophers—Kant, Fichte, and Hegel—is considered, by reference to their seminal writings on intellectual property issues.

Abstract This article explores the concept of ecofascism during the twenty-first century. In the midst of worsening ecological crises, a revival of ecofascist rhetoric and action has been observed. Despite this resurfacing, there is a lack of theorizing around the topic. This discussion will explore how the ecofascist label has been applied in different contexts historically, and the ways it may manifest in the twenty-first century. We hope that this stimulates conversation and awareness around ecofascism and serves as a guide to identify various ecofascist rhetorical tools, policies, and proposals.

We seek to advance the understanding of how the populist radical right in Spain reacted to Covid-19 in 2020. In particular, our contribution seeks to answer three questions. First, we consider the discursive and rhetorical tools adopted by the party. Second, we analyse how VOX, as an opposition party, has sought to challenge the governing coalition and the mainstream right. Specifically, we analyse the incentives, rationale, process and consequences party’s no confidence measure brought against the governing coalition. Third, we assess to what extent the party’s electoral potential has been influenced by the pandemic by analysing the party’s performance in the polls as well as support for VOX’s leadership amongst the party’s own voter base.
