Microfiche was a common format used in microforms reproductions of documents, extensively used for archival storage before the move to digital formats. While contemporary documents are still available for digitization, others from older historical periods are no longer physically accessible for various reasons. In some cases, their microfiche copies are available, making microfiche digitization a must. However, a microfiche reader is not always available and, even then, it is a machine made for the purpose of reading and not for data collection. In this work, the performance two imaging devices are evaluated as alternatives to the traditional microfiche reader, by means of optical character recognition (OCR). Results show that this alternative surpasses the performance of a microfiche reader in terms of text legibility.

The purpose of this work is to identify errors and types of translation, readability, and aesthetic elements in the Korean literary work of the collection of poems by Yun Dong-ju, which is translated into Russian. To analyze the result of the study, errors on the accuracy of the translation were first checked, based on the correct interpretation of the original text by comparing the original with the translation. Further, students of Kazan Federal University studied the errors of text legibility in the reading process. In conclusion, the content of aesthetic elements as literary works, such as Russian grammar and poetic elements were analyzed. It is necessary to determine the priority of language skills in the initial and final version of the translation for optimal translation, as well as a deep understanding of the author and his work.

AbstractReading efficiency is one of the main concerns among the teachers, publishers, and also eye care practitioners. The size of the text was among factor that might affect the reading. The eye movement behaviour was studied in six different text legibility. The saccades and fixation were recorded and tracked among twenty-five university students. Significant changes in eye movements behaviour in term of saccades and fixations occurred when the university students read passages with different text legibility. The eye movements behaviour was able to adapt to the changes in shape, and size of presented reading materials for better understanding of reading. Keywords: eye movements; saccadic; fixation; readingeISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. Text legibility in augmented reality with optical see-through displays can be challenging due to the interaction with the texture on the background. Literature presents several approaches to predict legibility of text superimposed over a specific image, but their validation with an AR display and with images taken from the industrial domain is scarce. In this work, we propose novel indices extracted from the background images, displayed on an LCD screen, and we compare them with those proposed in literature designing a specific user test. We collected the legibility user ratings by displaying white text over 13 industrial background images to 19 subjects using an optical see-through head-worn display. We found that most of the proposed indices have a significant correlation with user ratings. The main result of this work is that some of the novel indices proposed had a better correlation than those used before in the literature to predict legibility. Our results prove that industrial AR developers can effectively predict text legibility by simply running image analysis on the background image.
