UTe2 is a recently discovered unconventional superconductor that has attracted much interest because of its potentially spin-triplet topological superconductivity. Our ac calorimetry, electrical resistivity, and x-ray absorption study of UTe2 under applied pressure reveals key insights on the superconducting and magnetic states surrounding pressure-induced quantum criticality at Pc1 = 1.3 GPa. First, our specific heat data at low pressures, combined with a phenomenological model, show that pressure alters the balance between two closely competing superconducting orders. Second, near 1.5 GPa, we detect two bulk transitions that trigger changes in the resistivity, which are consistent with antiferromagnetic order, rather than ferromagnetism. Third, the emergence of magnetism is accompanied by an increase in valence toward a U4+ (5f2) state, which indicates that UTe2 exhibits intermediate valence at ambient pressure. Our results suggest that antiferromagnetic fluctuations may play a more substantial role on the superconducting state of UTe2 than previously thought.

The automatic frequency tuning method in the high-pressure ac calorimetry system constructed to measure heat capacity for molecules-based compounds with CuBe[Formula: see text]+[Formula: see text]NiCrAl cramp-type pressure cell is reported. This development is performed for increasing resolution and temperature ranges of the heat capacity measurements under external pressure up to 2.0 GPa. The system can check the appropriate conditions by tracing frequency dependence of [Formula: see text] to determine the oscillation frequency at the center of the plateau region of this value. The experiments using the powder samples of metal complexes clarified that the appropriate frequency changes sensitively depending on the difference of temperature and that of external pressures, especially at low temperature region. It decreases with increasing temperature and this relation was found to be almost linear with temperature in ambient pressure and under pressure conditions. The change of thermal diffusion from the sample part to the heat bath should be treated carefully in order to get enough resolution in high pressure AC heat capacity measurements of molecule-based compounds.

Abstract In this paper, the potential existence of two-gap superconductivity in Mo8Ga41 is addressed in detail by means of thermodynamic and spectroscopic measurements. A combination of highly sensitive bulk and surface probes, specifically ac-calorimetry and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), are utilized on the same piece of crystal and reveal the presence of only one intrinsic gap in the system featuring strong electron-phonon coupling. Minute traces of additional superconducting phases detected by STS and also in the heat capacity measured in high magnetic fields on a high-quality and seemingly single-phase crystal might mimic the multigap superconductivity of Mo8Ga41 suggested recently in several studies.

The temperature dependence of the specific heat of the single crystal Pb(In[Formula: see text]Nb[Formula: see text])O3-Pb(Mg[Formula: see text]Nb[Formula: see text])O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) was obtained at 80–500[Formula: see text]K by means of ac-calorimetry, and comparison with the calorimetric data for PMN was made, allowing one to determine absolute values of the specific heat of PIN-PMN-PT. For the high-temperature region ([Formula: see text][Formula: see text]K), the background heat capacity was calculated, the anomalies of the heat capacity for both compounds were determined, and the hump of the temperature dependence of specific heat PIN-PMN-PT was detected for the first time.
