Context: Empirical and anecdotal evidence suggest that many athletic trainers were former athletes and select the profession due to its affiliation with sport. Qualitative research has indicated that collegiate athletic trainers may have a strong athletic identity, but the concept of athletic identity has not been quantified in this population. Objective: To quantitatively asses the athletic identity of collegiate athletic trainers and determine if group differences exist. Design: Cross-sectional observational study. Setting: Collegiate clinical setting. Patients and Other Participants: A total of 257 (n = 93 (37%) males, n = 162 (63%) females) athletic trainers employed in the collegiate setting were included in data analysis. Main Outcome Measure(s): Data were collected via a web-based survey platform which was designed to measure athletic identity. Demographic information was analyzed for frequency and distribution. Mann-Whitney U tests and Kruskal-Wallis tests were calculated to determine if group differences existed. Results: The large majority of participants (90%) self-identified as having participated in organized sport yet scored moderately on the athletic identity measurement scale (22.9 ± 7.9). There were no sex differences in overall athletic identity (p = .446), but females did have higher levels of negative affectivity (p = .045) than males. Testing also revealed group differences based on current employment setting for social identity (p = .020), with NCAA Division I scores less than Division II, III, and NAIA. NCAA Division III exclusivity (p = .030) was lower than NCAA Division II and NAIA. Conclusions: It appears that components of athletic identity vary based on the employment setting of collegiate athletic trainers and may have a relationship to the number of hours worked in the summer. The moderate athletic identity scores of collegiate athletic trainers are comparable to former athletes who selected career paths outside of sport. This may indicate adaptive career decision processes.

Introduction. There are several β-lactamase genes described for Bacteroide s strains, of which cepA and cfiA are specific for Bacteroides fragilis and define two genetic divisions. The expression and phenotypic effects of these genes are usually regulated by insertional activation. Hypotheses/Gap Statement. Information is lacking about how cepA is regulated for most of the B. fragilis strains and whether there could be a genetic element for it. Aim. We aimed to investigate the molecular background of ampicillin (and other β-lactam) resistance among Bacteroides strains as mediated mainly by cepA and also to find a genetic element for it as known for cfiA. Methodology. Various PCR methods were used for β-lactamase-resistance gene and insertion sequence (IS) element detection in 42 Bacteroides strains. β-Lactamase activity measurements and antimicrobial-susceptibility testing using agar dilution were also applied. Further molecular experiments involved sequencing, gene targeting, Southern blotting and bioinformatic analyses. Results. We found that high antibiotic resistance and β-lactamase levels are brought about by insertional activation of the cepA gene or by similar or dissimilar activation of cfxA or cfiA, or by the newly described pbbA genes. Non-activated cepA genes produced low levels of specific β-lactamase activities that did not correlate with ampicillin resistance. We found a genetic element for cepA and another region close to it that are characteristic for division I B. fragilis strains, which are replaced by other sequences in division II B. fragilis strains. Conclusion. cepA usually is not activated by IS elements and usually produces low β-lactamase activities that do not correlate with the ampicillin MICs; therefore, it probably involves some non-β-lactamase-mediated resistance mechanism(s). pbpA is a newly described, effective β-lactamase gene that is located on a plasmid, and cepA resides on a well-defined chromosomal segment that is mutually replaced in division II B. fragilis strains. This latter finding demonstrates the genetic dichotomy of cepA–cfiA in B. fragilis and requires further investigation.

The population structure of Hia was examined by interrogation of the H. influenzae MLST website. There were 196 entries of Hia with 55 sequence types (STs) identified (as of September 3, 2020). BURST analysis clustered related STs into four complexes with ST-23, ST-4, ST-21 and ST-62 identified as their ancestral STs. The majority of Hia entries (73.4%) and STs (65.5%) were identified as clonal division I (ST-23 and the ST-4 complexes). Only 43 (21.9%) entries and 14 STs (25.5%) were identified as clonal division II (ST-62 and ST-21 complexes). Current data suggested most invasive Hia belonged to clonal division I and the ST-23 complex while most clonal division II Hia were respiratory isolates with the exception of ST-62 which was common among invasive Hia in the U.S. southwest. Comparison of the capsule bexABCD genes from clonal divisions I and II strains showed sequence diversity with variations following the pattern of clonal divisions. Evidence from the literature and the current study suggests recent emergence of invasive Hia might be related to capsule replacement subsequent to the implementation of the Hib conjugate vaccine and possibly exacerbated by other conjugate vaccines that may have altered the microbial flora of the human respiratory tract.

Istrian Flysch was deposited during the Eocene in the Dinaric foredeep and is composed of hemipelagic marls and various gravity flow deposits. The latter are predominantly 5-40 cm thick turbidites, developed mostly as laminated and cross-rippled sandstone beds (Tb-e, Tc-e and Td-e Bouma sequences). In addition to the turbidites, there are deposits characterized by a significant thickness, occasionally more than 10 m, described as complex (bipartite) megabeds. The megabeds are composed of debrites in the lower part (Division I), and high-density turbidites in the upper part (Division II). The distinct clast composition of each megabed indicates that the lithoclasts were derived from tectonically active slopes and fault scarps along which collapses of the different parts of the Cretaceous to Palaeogene neritic carbonate succession, (that underlie the Flysch), occurred. The Division II deposits are well cemented, normally graded calcirudite/calcarenites composed mostly of orthophragminids, nummulitids, and red algae, originating from outer ramp environments. Redeposited marl, observed in the matrix of the debrites and as intraclasts in some megabeds, implies that the collapses along the synsedimentary fault scarps and steep slopes also occurred within the foredeep itself, during the rapid tectono-sedimentary evolution of the Dinaric foreland basin.

Athletics at National Collegiate Athletic Association schools have played a major role in the educational experience of students, alumni, and surrounding communities since they were first introduced to college campuses. This study examined the relationship between athletic team fiscal expenditures on athletic and academic success for NCAA Division II football and men's and women's basketball programs. There was a void in the literature as it relates to the relationship of athletic spending on specific sports at the Division II level. The quantitative study used correlation and regression analyses. This study found a positive statistically significant relationship between athletic spending and overall win percentage in all three sports. Only women's basketball demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between Academic Success Rates scores and total team expenses. Recommendations for future research include utilizing total athletic department expenses to evaluate the relationship with academic success of all sports at an institution. As sport-specific expenses may not be used to support academic services within the sport, total athletic department expenses may better represent a university's commitment to its student-athletes' academic success.
