Abstract: The article aims to investigate possible implications between Leminski’s poetics with its clouds of equivocities, counter-narcissistic echoes – and his concerns about the environment, as explained in some texts since the 1970s. The interpretation of some of Leminski’s poems would expose that such implications are not limited to the possible thematization of nature’s elements, sometimes sublimated in a Parnassian chic or haiku- orientalizing way. On the contrary, they would pulsate in the relationship that the poet establishes between his gestures (in the movement), the friction between (two or more) codes and the wills and rhythms of the matter. Thus, Leminski’s poetry would help us to refine a thought about the links between poetry and ecology, language and the world, built in dialogue with reflections on this dilemma made by Michel Deguy (2007; 2009; 2012) and by Déborah Danowski and Eduardo Viveiros de Castro (2014).Keywords:  Paulo Leminski; Brazilian poetry; contemporary poetry.

On 13 March 2020, in the magazine Po&sie, which he founded, Deguy published a text entitled Coronation. Here, the reading of the contingent viral situation and certain concomitant events made use of his particular interpretative lens aimed at the poetic fact: the continuous exorbitance of the verbal matter from the confined space of the text, and the 'oppugnance' between its inside and outside, as a gift and its antidote. The twofold meaning of the lemma corona (here explored with reference to the tradition and to the modern poets Baudelaire, Mallarmé and Valéry) leads us back to the double status of the virus: both evil and remedy. By overflowing its borders, the virus pervades the global world, becoming a metaphor for contemporary evils and at the same time urging the critical act. We are left, as Deguy notes in La Poésie n'est pas seule, with «that homeopathic vaccine, catalysis and apocalypse, which adds to the world its end, 'precipitates' its end, is the possibility of art».

In Au fond des images (2003), Jean-Luc Nancy introduces concepts about the image, pertinent to understanding the minor genre of poets’ writings on painting. Nancy begins by stating that the image is sacred, clarifying that the sacred should not be confused with the religious, which is based on rituals. The sacred signifies that which is separated, excluded, distanced. The image’s attraction is derived from this, from its untouchable nature. Because of its separation from the viewer, the image inspires a desire for intimacy, and draws the spectator to it. Poets’ texts on painting constitute minor forms: prefaces to catalogs, criticism, or poems that are verbal transpositions of visual objects ( ekphrasis). These minor forms often express major preoccupations. In this essay, we address Mark Strand, Michel Deguy, Nicolas Pesquès, Yves Bonnefoy, and T. Alan Broughton from this perspective of a desire for contact in their efforts to develop their aesthetic and ethical principles through the gaze.
