Ella Rhoads Higginson (b. 1862?–d. 1940) was born in Council Grove, Kansas, a launching point for westward movement of settler colonialists. When she was a child, her family moved to Oregon, traveling in a wagon train following the old Oregon Trail. The family eventually settled in Oregon City, where she was educated in private school. Ella’s strong interests in reading and writing began early. Her parents possessed a substantial library that included books by Irving, Longfellow, Shakespeare, and Tennyson. Ella began writing when she was eight. Her first publication, the poem “Dreams of the Past,” appeared in The Oregon City newspaper when she was fourteen. The following year she began work on The Oregon City Enterprise newspaper, learning typesetting and editorial writing. She also started publishing fiction. In 1885, she married Russell Carden Higginson, a businessman who was a cousin to New England author Thomas Wentworth Higginson. The couple moved north to Whatcom (later Bellingham), Washington, where Higginson lived for fifty-two years until her death. There she devoted herself to writing. She soon became the first influential Pacific Northwest author. People around the world were introduced to the region when they read Higginson’s award-winning writing. Her descriptions of majestic mountains, vast forests, and the scenic waters of the Puget Sound presented the then-remote, unfamiliar Pacific Northwest to eager readers. Her characterizations of white women and men who inhabited the region revealed what life was like in this part of the nation as opposed to regions such as New England. Higginson’s celebrated writings were the first to place the Pacific Northwest on the literary map. Her talent was widely recognized. The prestigious Macmillan Company, which became her publisher, approached her seeking to print her work. She was awarded prizes from magazines such as Collier’s and McClure’s. Her poems were set to music and performed internationally. She published over eight hundred works in her lifetime. However, World War I altered the means of production, resulting in books going out of print and diminishing reputations of well-known authors, especially writers of color and women. Most of Higginson’s books went out of print. After the war, new editors, mostly white men, managed US newspapers, periodicals, and publishing companies. Largely uninterested in prewar authors, they sought writing from nascent literary movements such as Modernism while also promoting works by overlooked white male authors such as Melville. Higginson’s reputation faded in the last decades of her life. By the time she was chosen first Poet Laureate of Washington State in 1931, she and her work were largely remembered only in the Pacific Northwest. When she died in 1940, she was almost completely forgotten. In the 21st century, Higginson and her writings are returning to literary distinction.

A review of the naming profile of the inhabitants of Toledo, Paraná: traditional or innovative?Abstract Anthroponyms can be considered, for many, the maximum identity of an individual. Moreover, it is undeniable that, like other factors, people's names are an integral part of the culture of a place, since they reveal the beliefs, desires, and preferences of the named individuals. Thus, the objective of this study is to compare the results of an anthroponomastic survey conducted in the city of Toledo – Parana State - Brazil in 2013 (GRESPAN, 2013), which traced the inhabitants' naming profile from the records between 1954 and 2004, and the data collected in the civil registry of those registered in January 2018 in the same city. It is worth considering that only the names of the subjects will be analyzed. It was sought to answer the following research questions: did the naming phenomena found in the 2013 survey continue to occur in 2018? Do the names considered traditional until 2004 remain in the records 14 years later? Which names registered in 2018 are most repeated? This work is based on the Onomastics, more precisely in the Anthroponomastics, from which postulate Dick (1992) and LópezFranco (2010). To make it feasible, in addition to the data from the 2013 survey, the names of those registered in 2018 were registered at the Civil Registry Office of Toledo, totaling 164 names until January 26th. Of these, 87 are male, 76 female and 1 could not have the gender identified because it is an innovative name. It should be noted that the names of the nominees were not allowed - unlike the 2013 research - and therefore questions that were addressed in the first survey will not be considered here, such as, for example, the motivation to choose a homage to a family member. In addition, the corpus, quantitatively, is not comparable to the initial study, which contributes so that only the analysis of the names is done at the moment. The initial hypothesis is that the choice for religious motivation remains outstanding among subjects in Toledo, since a report published in a city newspaper on April 3, 2016, revealed that the names David and Maria were the most registered in 2015 in the city registry office. These data are in agreement with Grespan's (2013) research, which also recorded Maria as the most frequent name in the analyzed corpus.

The article represents features of the media image of language in the city newspaper. Semantic and stylistic characterization of the use of the lexeme ‘language’ in the newspaper text reveals the specificity of the media image. The material for the semantic and stylistic analysis of the interpretative field of the concept ‘language’ is the Russian mass city newspaper “Kuznetskiy rabochiy” (Novokuznetsk). Content analysis of the newspaper texts of 2002–2018 revealed regularities of the actualization of the semantics of the lexeme ‘language’ in the contexts. In the newspaper texts, the language is realized, primarily, as a system of the verbal means used to express the national identity, to increase the level of education and spiritual culture, and to improve the mutual understanding. In some degree, the language policy controls and corrects the state of this system. The newspaper texts demonstrate that the speech behavior of a modern person realizes not only the harmonious (the topic of creativity) but also the incorrect use of the language system (lie, verbal aggressiveness, errors, lack of the language taste). The estimation is explicated through the language game, the use of phraseological units, epithets, iterations, and antitheses. These devices create the meliorative contexts as well as the pejorative ones. The most emphasized semantic aspect “Language and national identity” is formed in the newspaper texts, primarily, due to the discourse specificity of the regional edition. One of the local historical dominants of the regional edition is tied to the topic of the destiny of the small nation. Apart from the materials about the Shor language, the main semantic aspect of the media image of language in the examined newspaper texts of the 21st century is the aspect “language and education”.

In 1975, the Broadway musical Chicago brought together a host of memes and myths, the gleefully subversive character of American musical comedy, the reckless glamor of the big-city newspaper, the mad decade of the 1920s, the work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon—two of the greatest talents in the musical’s history—and the Wild West gangsterville that was the city of Chicago itself. The tale of a young woman who murders her departing lover and then tricks the jury into letting her off, Chicago seemed too blunt and cynical at first. Everyone agreed it was show biz at its brilliant best, yet the public still preferred A Chorus Line, with its cast of innocents and sentimental feeling. Nevertheless, the 1996 Chicago revival is now the longest-running American musical in history, and the movie version won the Best Picture Oscar. As this text looks back at Chicago’s various moving parts, including the original 1926 play that started it all, a sexy silent film directed by Cecil B. DeMille, a talkie remake with Ginger Rogers, the musical itself, and at last the movie of the musical, we see how the American theatre serves as a kind of alternative news medium, a town crier warning the public about the racy, devious interior contradictions of American society.

This chapter discusses the life and career of Chicago’s playwright, Maurine Watkins. Against the backdrop of the era at the time of Chicago’s writing, her profile suggests a breakaway personality. She left her home and family to try for a writing career, competing with men as a reporter on a fast-and-furious big-city newspaper and generally going after what she wanted with a resolve unusual in those steeped in small-scale township values and a religious upbringing. Yet Watkins was not a flapper. In fact, her life completely upends the twenties stereotype of the insurgent maiden slicing away at received notions of womanhood. Watkins’ hair was bobbed and she had her own way of doing things, no matter what men told her. But she compacted with no new gods and made no rumpus in the temples. Here was a true individual: even her nonconformism was nonconformist.
