In investigating how member ability is translated into group brainstorming performance, it was predicted that a group’s collective intelligence (CI) would enable it to capitalize on member ability while maximizing process gains and mitigating process losses. Ninety-nine groups were randomly assigned to complete a short brainstorming task using a hybrid (individual-group work) or collective (only group work) task structure. High CI groups were better than low CI groups at translating member ability into group brainstorming performance. Additionally, this hybrid structure was more beneficial for low CI groups than for high CI groups in generating total ideas.

BACKGROUND In times of COVID-19, we are challenged to experiment with alternative platforms or software to connect people. In particular, the struggle in health research arose to interact with patients and care professionals. The latter is additionally faced with an extreme workload to fight the pandemic crisis. Creative strategies are developed to continue research among patients and care professionals to improve quality of care. This paper addresses the issue of synchronous online nominal group sessions, a common consensus method used for group brainstorming. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to share our experiences with performing online nominal group sessions using the video conference software Microsoft® Teams. In addition, we aim to create a practical guide with recommendations for researchers. METHODS We critically analysed data collection of online nominal group sessions, according to the Fishbone methodology. RESULTS Performing synchronous online nominal group sessions is challenging but offers opportunities. Although interaction with and among the attendees complicates the process, the major advantage of online sessions is their accessibility and low time investment. The role of the moderators is of major importance and good preparation beforehand is required. Recommendations for future online nominal research were formulated. CONCLUSIONS Online nominal group sessions seem to be a promising alternative for the real-life commonly used technique. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the benefits must be highlighted. More expertise is needed to further refine the practical guide for using digital software in research and to achieve optimal performance.

The article discusses methods for increasing the value of an enterprise through innovation. Project management models and managers' participation in their formation are studied. Methods of active search for ideas, both in group and individual terms, are investigated. The method of generating ideas — group brainstorming, as well as an alternative method — «brainwriting», which includes several tools. Their strengths and weaknesses are revealed. The process of sorting ideas using the clustering method is described. The necessity of having these tools in organizations is justified.

Student evaluations and judgments of the accounting method used in the restatement of financial statements by a public company for channel stuffing are examined. To reduce any heuristics and biases that may have affected student judgments, a group brainstorming method was incorporated to supplement individual assessments made by the students. The case study was administered to 206 students in three student groups: non-degree, justice school and business school students. Qualitative evidence about the efficacy of the use of the brainstorming technique is provided. Between-subjects’ assessments of the accounting restatements show that justice school and business school students are more likely than non-degree students to disagree with the assessment that the restatement was appropriate. Empirical evidence was also found for the presence of social identity bias between business school and justice school students’ evaluation of sanctions. Implications on the use of behavioral techniques in accounting and ethics education are discussed.

Long-standing wisdom holds that criticism is antithetical to effective brainstorming because it incites intragroup conflict. However, a number of recent studies have challenged this assumption, suggesting that criticism might actually enhance creativity in brainstorming by fostering divergent thinking. Our paper reconciles these perspectives with new theory and a multimethod investigation to explain when and why criticism promotes creativity in brainstorming. We propose that a cooperative social context allows criticism to be construed positively, spurring creativity without inciting intragroup conflict, whereas a competitive social context makes criticism more divisive, leading to intragroup conflict and a corresponding reduction in creativity. We found support for this theory from a field experiment involving 100 group brainstorming sessions with actual stakeholders in a controversial urban planning project. In a cooperative context, instructions encouraging criticism yielded more ideas and more creative ideas, whereas in a competitive context, encouraging criticism yielded fewer ideas and less creative ideas. We replicated this finding in a laboratory study involving brainstorming in the context of a union-management negotiation scenario, which allowed us to hold constant the nature of the criticism. Taken together, our findings suggest that the optimal context for creativity in brainstorming is a cooperative one in which criticism occurs but is interpreted constructively because the brainstorming parties perceive their goals as aligned.

This  study  aims  to  explore  the  vertical  alignments  between  HR  department  activities  and  the company's HR strategy. The goal of this study is to ensure how HR activities can be aligned with HR strategies to enhance the HR department works in the context of achieving company goals. The study was conducted by depth discussion of scientific journals that have been written with interactive group brainstorming approach, consisting of 21 students into three groups to discuss and generate ideas about HR activities and their strategic relationships while researchers guide and provide the materialsneeded. The group identified and agreed on seven HR activities including job design; mobilization; selection; retention and separation; performance management; employee training; and compensation, and aligned with each of the four HR strategies identified including the Bargain Laborer; Free Agent; Loyal Soldier; and Committed Expert. The results of the study revealed the relevance of the activities of the HR department with the company's HR strategy. Total organizational performance also be positively influenced by HR activities through the company's HR strategy

The increasing growth in the development of new technology is changing the way users interact with products. Thus, designers must re-think the human-machine interfaces (HMI) for communicating information regularly. Co-creation – the process of joint creation of users and designers – is an approach to product and experience development that can substantially benefit the generation of innovative product proposals. The present paper aims to assess the feasibility of co-creation workshops for the development of proposals for interfaces of Artificial Intelligence derived products through a case study on interfaces for autonomous vehicles. For this purpose, two sessions of co-creation workshops using group brainstorming techniques were conducted with undergraduate and graduate Design students and professors, who are specialists in interaction and information design. The results showed that the interfaces proposed by the designers were communicated information in a wide range of ways, making use of existing technologies to present messages in an innovative manner, meeting autonomous vehicles’ users’ needs.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the factors that discourage construction workers from undergoing skill development training, and to suggest steps for making the training programmes more attractive to them. Design/methodology/approach The research used an exploratory approach of unstructured interviews with construction workers (bottom-up approach), and the guided group brainstorming technique with the help of experienced industry professionals (top-down approach). Findings From the unstructured interviews, five inhibiting factors were identified which discourage construction workers from undergoing training. Furthermore, to recognise the causes of the inhibiting factors, 13 possible causal attributes (PCAs) were identified from the brainstorming approach. Subsequently, these PCAs were classified into five possible causal factors (PCFs) on the basis of those concerned stakeholder(s) that are most closely involved and most responsible for fixing them. Research limitations/implications The research provides recommendations to practitioners for pragmatic and permanent resolution of each of the PCFs, which serves as a framework for the construction industry to reduce the scarcity of trained workers in the industry. Also, the results may serve as a model for the planning and successful implementation of any new skill-training programme for the construction workers in any developing economy, such as India. Originality/value This research contributes to the literature by highlighting the views of construction workers on the training establishments, which very few studies have considered in the past. Also, the research provides a detailed process of brainstorming approach, which will help the research community to appreciate its use in studies related to the construction industry.
