Galician literary historiography shows links and ruptures that refer to the cultural history of Galicia itself and to the sequence of historical events that have delineated the social, economic and political development of the country since the 19th century. These coordinates comprise a series of processes, including the elaboration and propagation of ideologies aimed at achieving a way out of political subalternity and oriented towards the horizon of national emancipation. Those events and these processes also marked the connection of Galicia with modernity and the dynamics of historical change. As a result of the above, this book analyses critically the institutionalization processes of the history of Galician literature – with special emphasis on historiographic models such as that of Said Armesto, Carvalho Calero, Méndez Ferrín and others – and indicates the need to undertake a productive methodological innovation of the discipline in heuristic, organic and discursive terms. It further argues that this update should pay attention to substantive theoretical debates, not exclusively of specific cultural coordinates, such as Galician ones or any others that could be considered. Among these, the cooperation between history and sociology, the intellection of literary facts as historical facts, the review of the link between literary history and nation, the public uses of literary history, and the inquiry of discursive choices that promote a less self-indulgent and predictable historiography. This essentially involved a challenge, that of permanent dialogue with some of the most powerful critical reinterpretations of the Galician historiographic tradition and with alternative models constituted from feminist thought, postcolonial theories, the sociology of the literary field or the systemic theories of culture, as well as with the contributions made from a post-national understanding of the literary phenomenon.

The study of masculinity and its representation is especially fascinating in Spanish and Galician literature of the mid-20th century. In the two stories to be analyzed in this essay, “O xogo da Guerra” (“The War Game”) and “Agarda longa ao sol” (“Long Wait under the Sun”) — both written by Carlos Casares (Ourense 1941-Nigrán, Pontevedra 2002)—the versions of masculinity displayed by male characters can be considered as denunciations of the model that Franco wished to impose: made in his image, disciplined, cold, and violent. Manhood in Casares is characterized by an ability to accept nonconformity and to assume a reality that conflicts with masculine epistemology as it is known. The new man is ready to absorb a new reality and free a society consumed by hatred, pushing it towards democracy and understanding. Galicia and its people are the main protagonists of these transformations.

Resumen: Este artículo ahonda en la vinculación de José Ángel Valente con la literatura y la cultura gallegas. Se examinan ciertas intertextualidades significativas presentes en el poemario Cántigas de alén y en otros textos, que revelan la huella insoslayable de Vicente Risco a la hora de establecer una lógica del asentamiento que viene a contradecir la poética explícita del autor (fundada, como se sabe, sobre una potente conciencia exílica) y que acaba proyectándose sobre la lectura que Valente hace de Rosalía de Castro. Materiales como la biografía, las cartas, el Diario anónimo o el catálogo de la biblioteca del poeta permiten contextualizar estas deudas en un entramado de sociabilidad afectiva e intelectual que ayuda a comprender la incardinación específica del poeta en el espacio cultural gallego, caracterizado por el conflicto y la diáspora. Palabras clave: José Ángel Valente; literatura y cultura gallegas; Cántigas de alén; Vicente Risco; Rosalía de Castro. Abstract: This article explores José Ángel Valente’s link to Galician literature and culture. Meaningful intertextual presences displayed in the collection Cántigas de alén and in other texts are evaluated. They reveal the inescapable mark of Vicente Risco in establishing a logics of settlement that comes to contradict the explicit poetics of the author (founded, as known, on a strong conscience of exile) and which ends up projected upon Valente’s reading of Rosalía de Castro. Materials as biographies, letters, the Diario anónimo and the catalogue of Valente’s personal library allow to contextualize these debts within a framework of intellectual and affective sociability that helps to understand the poet’s specific incardination in the Galician cultural space, as characterized by conflict and diaspora. Key words: José Ángel Valente; Galician literature and culture; Cántigas de alén; Vicente Risco; Rosalía de Castro.

Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) representa un papel canónico tanto na literatura castelá como na galega. Propomos unha visión da súa figura autoral á luz da Teoría dos Polisistemas Literarios formulada por Itamar Even-Zohar, a cal entende a tradución literaria como un factor fundamental do concepto de influencia. Acto seguido, presentaremos un exercicio de literatura comparada onde poremos en relación as obras de Rosalía coas doutros autores da sua época, o que nos dará una mellor idea do seu papel, tanto nas relacións centro-periferia literarias, como na configuración dunha literatura europea. Veremos como a autora bebe de fontes literarias insospeitadas. Por último, examinaremos a súa obra de para ver como Rosalía escapa de calquera clasificación tradicional posible, sendo o seu espazo de acción, precisamente, a fronteira.Rosalía de Castro (1837-1885) holds a canonic role in both Castilian and Galician literature. A vision of her authorial identity is proposed in terms of Itamar Even-Zohar’s Polysystem Theory, which understands literary translation as a fundamental factor in the concept of influence. Subsequently, an exercise in comparative literature will be presented in which de Castro’s Works are examined in relation to those of other authors of her time, which will shed light on the nature of her role, both in center-periphery relations and in the constitution of a European literature. De Castro’s unsuspected sources of literary inspiration will then be discussed. Lastly it will be considered how de Castro’s body of work has escaped from any traditional classification whatsoever, as its sphere of action is, for all intents and purposes, the border space.
