Abstract The interactions with human drivers is one of the major challenges for autonomous vehicles. In this study, we consider urban crossroads without signals where driver interactions are indispensable. Crossroads are parameterized to be used in studying how drivers pass the crossroad while maintaining a desired speed without collision. We define a probability of yielding for each car as a function of vehicle speed and the distance-to-intersection for both vehicles, while the interactions between vehicles are characterized by a point of action for incoming vehicles from different directions. Driver behaviors in terms of acceleration/deceleration given current circumstances are also modeled probabilistically. The method is then analyzed and validated by data collected from human drivers in the simulated environments. The result shows comparable prediction accuracy to the state-of-the-art method, where characteristic parameters of drivers are also shown to be critical for the behavior predictions. We also extend our model to two real-world urban crossroads applications : crash analysis and traffic characteristic parameters identification. In both cases, our prediction results are analogous to those acquired in virtual environments. For autonomous vehicle, our method can help building a computer-driving logic that matches human behaviors, such that interactions between different drivers will be more intuitive.

Sylhet is a Metropolitan city of north east part of Bangladesh, aspect severe traffic problem due to speedy and unrestrained development. This happens due to intolerable level of inequity in transportation demand and supply scenario. To assess the asperity of the existing traffic system engrossed by enormous traffic problem in Sylhet city a study was steered by Civil and Environmental Engineering department. Purpose of this study to show the traffic characteristic in Sylhet City and developed utility function of numerous modes of vehicles. Floating car or Moving observer method were used to determine the traffic characteristics and multiple regression is used to develop utility function. Results shows that center of city (Bondor to Amborkhana) have highest traffic flow and overcrowding. It is conceived that this outcome will assist in the development of future traffic model and prevent from traffic congestion of Sylhet City.

With the application of synchronized phase measurement devices and the rapid development of communications networks, WAMS is gradually becoming the focus of domestic and international science and technology researchers. Based on the OPNET simulation software, this article looks into the communication line of WAMS and conducts a study on WAMS link bandwidth and designs a new method of detecting traffic characteristic. Finally, it proves the conclusion that communication line traffic characteristic can be improved as bandwidth increases. The results will have a higher value for the design of wide area measurement system.
