Poultry co-product chicken frames (CF) and wooden breast (WB) along with ingredient technology use may bring enhanced value to the pet food industry. Therefore, the current study focused on evaluating CF and WB combinations along with sodium alginate and encapsulated calcium lactate pentahydrate (ALGIN) inclusion within a fresh pet food formulation under simulated shelf-life conditions. Fresh chicken frames (CF) and boneless-skinless wooden breast (WB) were ground and allocated randomly to one of ten treatment combinations with either 0.5 or 1.0% added ALGIN. Ground treatments were placed into a form and fill vacuum package and stored using a reach-in refrigerated case for 21 days. Packages were evaluated for instrumental surface color, lipid oxidation, water activity, and pH on days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 21 of the display. Packages of pet food were lighter, less red, and more yellow (p < 0.05) with increasing percentages of CF regardless of ALGIN inclusion, whereas pH was greater (p < 0.05) and lipid oxidation was less (p < 0.05) with increasing percentage of WB. Water activity increased (p < 0.05) when WB and ALGIN inclusion increased. The current results suggest that the use of ALGIN in a poultry co-product pet food formulation can improve shelf-life characteristics such as surface color and lipid oxidation in fresh pet food.

The Life of Type (LOT) of a naval High Speed Light Craft (HSLC) can be limited by its structural fatigue life. The fatigue life of a ship is influenced by many factors, such as geometry, fabrication quality, the long-term load distribution, and analytical techniques. The complex dependencies between these factors and the fatigue life cause uncertainty in predictions. A lack of understanding of uncertainty can adversely affect the management of LOT risks, resulting in the reduction of availability of the ship and costly repairs. Therefore, improved understanding of the benefits and limitations of different fatigue life evaluation approaches informs the management of risks relating to the ship’s LOT. This paper presents the first phase of work in a comparative analysis of different fatigue life evaluation approaches for naval HSLC. The present work involves a holistic data review, codification of the data to reveal key themes, and individual expert comparative analysis of the different approaches. The next phase of the study is also described.

To reveal the global picture and emerging evolution trends with sufficiently large literature data of RC structure’s service life prediction, especially the time to corrosion initiation, the scientometric analysis on the corresponding evolution trends was performed by using visualization software CiteSpace and VOSviewer in this paper. First, the application of CiteSpace and VOSviewer and retrieval strategy for data collection were described. And then, information visualization analysis was carried out based on the papers related to RC structure’s service life evaluation from publications number evolution, journal distribution, and authors’ contribution. Finally, document cocitation network, cooccurring keywords network, and timeline view of keywords network were conducted to discuss the research hotspots on time to corrosion initiation evaluation of reinforcement. Research results reveal that the number of publications on RC structure’s service life evaluation reached its peak in 2011. Besides, Structural Safety is the journal that makes the most significant contributions, and Professor Li CQ is the author with the most contribution score. Moreover, the knowledge body of the time to corrosion initiation prediction consists of six clusters; the high-citation articles in this field mainly focus on the multiple-parameters model and probabilistic reliability method.

The present-day interest in the use of composite-steel joints in primary marine applications requires an in-depth knowledge of the fatigue performance of thick adhesive joints. This paper reports on experimental tests, quasi-static and fatigue, performed on unaged and aged bi-material double strap joints with thick adhesive bondlines. The specimens are monitored by Digital Image Correlation and Infrared Thermography techniques to evaluate the types and extent of damage that occur in the joint during fatigue loading. The S-N curve of the aged joint is evaluated along with it’s fatigue limit. It is found that the unaged specimens fail due to cohesive damage, hackles and disbond at the adhesive-adherend interface and the aged specimens failed due to delamination within the composite. The specimens that survived fatigue loading showed similar residual strength as specimens that were not fatigue loaded.
