Abstract The remediation of Pb, Cd, and Zn contaminated soil by ex situ EDTA washing was investigated in two pot experiments. We tested the influence of (i) 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5%wt zero-valent iron (ZVI) and (ii) a combination of 5%wt vermicompost, 2%wt biochar, and 1%wt ZVI on the metal availability in EDTA-washed soil using different soil extracts (Aqua regia, NH4NO3) and plant concentrations. We found that EDTA soil washing significantly reduced the total concentration of Pb, Cd, and Zn and significantly reduced the Cd and Zn plant uptake. Residual EDTA was detected in water extracts causing the formation of highly available Pb-EDTA complexes. While organic amendments had no significant effect on Pb behavior in washed soils, an amendment of ≥ 1%wt ZVI successfully reduced EDTA concentrations, Pb bioavailability, and plant uptake. Our results suggest that Pb-EDTA complexes adsorb to a Fe oxyhydroxide layer, quickly developing on the ZVI surface. The increase in ZVI application strongly decreases Zn concentrations in plant tissue, whereas the uptake of Cd was not reduced, but even slightly increased. Soil washing did not affect plant productivity and organic amendments improved biomass production.

The interaction of EDTA with calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and its impact on the sorption of U(VI) by C-S-H in the presence of EDTA at varying concentrations has been investigated under N2 and ambient atmosphere. The solid phase characterization was performed by FTIR, XRD and TGA measurements and the uranium concentration in solution has been determined by alpha-spectroscopy. At increased EDTA concentrations ([EDTA] > 0.1 M) calcium is complexed and extensively extracted from the solid resulting in a quantitative dissolution of the Ca(OH)2 phase and deterioration of C-S-H. At lower EDTA concentrations ([EDTA] ≤ 0.01 M), EDTA is sorbed into the solid phase and the associated adsorption capacity (qmax = 0.67 mol/kg) has been evaluated by fitting the corresponding data with the Langmuir isotherm model. The incorporation of EDTA in the C-S-H matrix was corroborated by FTIR, XRD and TGA measurements. Regarding the effect of EDTA on the U(VI) sorption by C-S-H, evaluation of the experimental data reveal a significant decrease of the Kd values in the presence of EDTA most probably due to the stabilization of U(VI) in the form of U(VI)-EDTA complexes in solution. Under ambient conditions a further decrease of the Kd values is observed because of the formation of U(VI)-carbonato complexes related to CO2 dissolution and hydrolysis.

[RuII(edta)(L)]2–, where edta4– =ethylenediaminetetraacetate; L = pyrazine (pz) and H2O, can reduce molecular oxygen sequentially to hydrogen peroxide and further to water by involving both outer-sphere and inner-sphere electron transfer processes.

EDTA can complex with radionuclides (RNs) to form negatively charged complexes, making it difficult for clay minerals to retard the diffusion of RNs waste. The diffusion coefficient of RNs in water (Dw) is an important parameter for the safety assessment of the repository. In this study, the effectsof EDTA on the diffusion of metal ions (Cu2+, Sm3+, Nd3+, Lu3+ and Zn2+) were investigated by a capillary method. The experimental results showed that [Cu-EDTA]2-, [Sm-EDTA]-and [La-EDTA]-have higher Dw thanthe Mn+. Whereas, [Nd-EDTA]-and [Zn-EDTA]2- have lower Dw than Nd3+ and Zn2+ cations. The Dw is consistent with the literatures, indicating the validity of the capillary method to determine the diffusion coefficients. According to Stokes-Einstein relation, the ionic radius and ionic potential of the ion are in disproportional to the Dw value. Cu-, Sm-and La-EDTA complexes have smaller molecular size than the uncomplexed metal ions, indicating that the Mn+ ions might be associated with many water molecules to form hydrated ions with larger ionic radius. Whereas the [Nd-EDTA]-and [Zn-EDTA]2- have larger molecular size than Nd3+ and Zn2+ cations.
