Augmented reality medical training simulators can provide a realistic and immersive experience by overlapping the virtual scene on to the real world. Latency in augmented reality (AR) medical training simulators is an important issue as it can lead to motion sickness for users. This paper proposes a framework that can achieve real-time rendering of the 3D scene aligned to the real world using a head-mounted display (HMD). Model deformation in the 3D scene is categorised into local deformation derived from user interaction and global deformation determined by the simulation scenario. Target shapes are predefined by a simulation scenario, and control points are placed to embed the predefined shapes. Free-form deformation (FFD) is applied to multiple shapes to efficiently transfer the simulated model to the HMD. Global deformation is computed by blending a mapping matrix of each FFD with an assigned weighting value. The local and global deformation are then transferred through the control points updated from a deformed surface mesh and its corresponding weighting value. The proposed framework is verified in terms of latency caused by data transmission and the accuracy of a transmitted surface mesh in a vaginal examination (VE) training simulation. The average latency is reduced to 7 ms, less than the latency causing motion sickness in virtual reality simulations. The maximum relative error is less than 3%. Our framework allows seamless rendering of a virtual scene to the real world with substantially reduced latency and without the need for an external tracking system.

A method for the morphing of surface/volume meshes suitable to be used in hydrodynamic shape optimization is proposed. Built in the OpenFOAM environment, it relies on a Laplace equation that propagates the modifications of the surface boundaries, realized by applying a free-form deformation to a subdivision surface description of the geometry, into the computational volume mesh initially built through a combination of BlockMesh with cfMesh. The feasibility and robustness of this mesh morphing technique, used as a computationally efficient pre-processing tool, is demonstrated in the case of the resistance minimization of the DTC hull. All the hull variations generated within a relatively large design space are efficiently and successfully realized, i.e., without mesh inconsistencies and quality issues, only by deforming the initial mesh of the reference geometry. Coupled with a surrogate model approach, a significant reduction in the calm water resistance, in the extent of 10%, has been achieved in a reasonable computational time.

This paper proposes a method for optimising the hull form of ocean-going trawlers to decrease resistance and consequently reduce the energy consumption. The entire optimisation process was managed by the integration of computer-aided design and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the CAESES software. Resistance was simulated using the CFD solver and STAR-CCM+. The ocean-going trawler was investigated under two main navigation conditions: trawling and design. Under the trawling condition, the main hull of the trawler was modified using the Lackenby method and optimised by NSGA-II algorithm and Sobol + Tsearch algorithm. Under the design condition, the bulbous bow was changed using the free-form deformation method, and the trawler was optimised by NSGA-Ⅱ. The best hull form is obtained by comparing the ship resistance under various design schemes. Towing experiments were conducted to measure the navigation resistance of trawlers before and after optimisation, thus verifying the reliability of the optimisation results. The results show that the proposed optimisation method can effectively reduce the resistance of trawlers under the two navigation conditions.
