Cichlids are highly abundant and commercially important fish in freshwater ecosystems in Nigeria. This study examined the diversity and abundance of cichlids in Ikere Gorge Reservoir. Four fishing villages were randomly selected from 12 fishing villages in Ikere Gorge Reservoir as sampling sites. Cichlids were sampled randomly and examined from fishermen catch in each selected fishing village; were identified with appropriate keys; the weight and abundance of the catches were recorded. The data obtained was subjected to descriptive statistical analysis using SPSS (Version 20.0) software to determine the abundance of fish species. Fish species diversity was carried out by using Palaeontological Statistics (PAST). Eight species of cichlids were sampled in Ikere Gorge but Sarotherodon galilaeus was the most abundant species while the least abundant species was Pelmatolapia mariae. It was observed that, cichlids were  abundant in rainy season than in the dry season. Likewise, cichlids were abundant in Ikere-gorge reservoir but they have low diversity. This may be as a result of unsustainable fishing pressure and deforestation of riparian forest and sedimentation in Ikere-gorge reservoir. Therefore, to maintain sustainable fishing activities and improve cichlids population in Ikeregorge reservoir, unsustainable activities in and around Ikere Gorge reservoir should be put under control. Reservoir regulation has been playing an increasingly important role in water resources development and its influence on the hydrological processes of downstream tributaries has attracted much attention. The lower Han River is selected as a case study to examine the hydrological and hydraulic influence of the upstream flow regulation of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) in the middle Yangtze River, China. Based on a hydrodynamic model and the observed data, the hydrological processes in the lower Han River were simulated and their changes were analyzed under the impoundment influences of the TGR. The results indicated that there were obviously hydrological changes in the lower Han River after the TGR operation. The decreased stage downstream the TGR during the impounding periods of the TGR resulted in an increase in the stage difference, current speed, hydraulic gradient and the discharge ratio. In addition, the stage difference between the two rivers was decreased during the periods of water compensation from the TGR, which led to the outflow congestion in the lower Han River. The hydrological changes in the lower Han River were the response to the flow regulation of the TGR and the inflow of the two rivers. The variation in the rating curve in the lower Han River mainly resulted from the stage difference between the two rivers during the dispatching periods of the TGR. These results help to explain the hydrological variability under the impounding influence of the TGR for the lower Han River and they can be extended to other river tributaries downstream to the reservoirs.

Abstract. Reservoirs on rivers can disrupt organic carbon (OC) transport and transformation, but less is known how river reaches directly below dams contribute to OC processing. We compared how reservoirs and their associated tailwaters affected OC quantity and quality by calculating particulate OC (POC) and dissolved OC (DOC) fluxes, and measuring composition and bioavailability of DOC. We sampled the Yampa River near Maybell, Colorado, USA, and the Green River above and below Fontenelle and Flaming Gorge reservoirs as well as their respective tailwaters from early snowmelt to base flow hydrological conditions. In unregulated reaches (Yampa River, Green River above Fontenelle reservoir), DOC and POC concentrations increased with snowmelt discharge. POC and DOC concentrations also increased with stream discharge below Fontenelle reservoir, but there was no relationship between DOC and stream flow below Flaming Gorge reservoir. The annual load of POC was 3-fold lower below Fontenelle Reservoir and nearly 7-fold lower below Flaming Gorge reservoir, compared to their respective upstream sampling sites. DOC exported to downstream reaches from both reservoirs was less bioavailable, as measured with bioassays, than DOC upriver of the reservoirs. Lastly, tailwater reaches below the reservoirs generated OC, exporting potentially 1.6–2.2 g C m−2 d−1 of OC to downstream ecosystems. Therefore, the effect of impounding rivers on C fluxes is greater than the impact of the reservoirs alone given the additive effect of tailwater reaches below dams, which may produce and export comparable amounts of likely autochthonous carbon to downstream reaches.
