Deep-water king crabs of the genus Paralomis White, 1856 collected during three cruises of the Fishery Oceanographic Research Vessel Sagar Sampada in the western Bay of Bengal (528–777 m depths), one cruise in the eastern Bay of Bengal off Great Nicobar Island (337 m depth), and four cruises in the southeastern Arabian Sea (315–1245 m) were identified. They are referred to Paralomis ceres Macpherson, 1989, recorded for the first time from Indian waters and P. indica Alcock & Anderson, 1899, reported for the first time from the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. In addition, this study reports the morphological variability among the P. indica populations in the shape of the carapace and dorsal rostral spines, nature of the branchial and cardiac regions and abdominal marginal spines, and the relative lengths of pereopods 2–4. Mitochondrial Cytochrome oxidase I (594 base pairs) and 16S rRNA (503 bp) gene sequences of P. ceres and P. indica (602 and 497 bp, respectively) revealed that they formed distinct lineages. A key to the Indian Ocean species of Paralomis is provided.

The present study aims at gaining more insight into the evolution of warm pool and associated sea level dome in the southeastern Arabian Sea before the summer monsoon onset.  The results show that the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) maximum in the warm pool region is found during April close to the southwest coast of India.  The Sea Surface Height (SSH) maximum over the same region is observed during December. The collapse of sea level dome begins well in advance during the pre-monsoon whereas the warm pool collapses after the onset of summer monsoon during June.  Therefore, there is a lag of about three to four months between the collapses of the sea level high and the warm pool.  Most interesting aspect is the dramatic increase of SST from September and SSH from October which is continued throughout the post monsoon season (October - December). Therefore, both the collapse and evolution of warm pool are dramatic events before and after the summer monsoon.                    There are considerable variations in the intensity of warm pool and the height of sea level dome on interannual scale.  The variation during El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) epoch of 1987-88 has revealed many interesting features.  During El-Nino year 1987 the warm pool intensity reached its peak in June whereas during La Nina year 1988 the warm pool attained its maximum intensity much earlier, i.e., in April.

Background: The success or failure of spawning in any population affects the fishery. Hence, studies on spawning, maturation, fecundity and length at first maturity become essential in drafting management strategies. The detailed information on reproductive traits of Sphyraena obtusata will be helpful in sustainable management and conservation in the study area. Methods: Three hundred and fifty five specimens of S. obtusata were collected fortnightly from Mangaluru and Malpe fishing harbors during August 2019 to March 2020. Maturity of gonads was examined by macroscopic and histological investigations. Spawning periodicity was worked out based on maturity stages and seasonal gonadosomatic index. Gravimetric method of analysis was employed to evaluate the fecundity from randomly collected samples of gravid females. Result: Overall sex ratio revealed that the population had significantly higher (p less than 0.05, X2 test) proportion of females than males. The length at 50% maturity (Lm50) for females and males was estimated at 21.1 and 21.5 cm respectively. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) and the availability of matured individuals for both the sexes in various percentage indicated a prolonged breeding period from October to March with peaks in November and December. The absolute fecundity varied from 91,942 eggs (20.0 cm TL) to 1,34,445 eggs (27.0 cm TL) with an average of 1,12,878 ± 2,984 hydrated oocytes per female.
