Abstract. Iconographic representations, such as historical photos of geographic spaces, are precious cultural heritage resources capable of describing a particular geographical area’s evolution over time. These photographic collections may vary in size, between hundreds and thousands of items. With the advent of the digital era, many of these documents have been digitized, spatialized, and are available online. Browsing through these digital image collections represents new challenges. This paper examines the topic of historical image exploration in a virtual environment enabling the co-visualization of historical photos into a contemporary 3D scene. We address the topic of user interaction considering the potential volume of the input data. Our methodology is based on design guidelines that rely on visual perception techniques to ease visual complexity and improve saliency on specific cues. The designs are additionally implemented following an image-based rendering approach and evaluated in a group of users. Overall, these propositions may be a notable addition to creating innovative ways to visualize and discover historical images in a virtual geographic environment.

The spatial conflicts in the construction of high-speed railways not only reduce project efficiency, but also lead to serious accidents. To address these key issues, this paper presents a dynamic simulation method for constructions processes based on a virtual geographic environment. This approach can facilitate the identification of conflicts in the construction scheme through accurately expressing and analysing the intricate spatio-temporal relations among railway facility components, construction equipment and the surrounding environment. First, a high-precision virtual geographic scene in which the construction process and methods can be visualized and modelled intuitively is established with terrain, imagery, and engineering 3D models. Then, the overall construction processes can be accurately simulated by a sequential display of the railway components and the behaviour of construction equipment. To simulate the behaviour of construction equipment, the linkage relations between each joint of construction machinery are accurately modelled and animation control parameters are extracted. Finally, a construction simulation of a high-speed railway bridge was performed, and the experimental results show that the proposed method can provide a scientific basis for the optimization of complex engineering construction schemes, safety hazard assessments, and related full life cycle tasks.

The core of intelligent virtual geographical environments (VGEs) is the formal expression of geographic knowledge. Its purpose is to transform the data, information, and scenes of a virtual geographic environment into “knowledge” that can be recognized by computer, so that the computer can understand the virtual geographic environment more easily. A geographic knowledge graph (GeoKG) is a large-scale semantic web that stores geographical knowledge in a structured form. Based on a geographic knowledge base and a geospatial database, intelligent interactions with virtual geographical environments can be realized by natural language question answering, entity links, and so on. In this paper, a knowledge-enhanced Virtual geographical environments service framework is proposed. We construct a multi-level semantic parsing model and an enhanced GeoKG for structured geographic information data, such as digital maps, 3D virtual scenes, and unstructured information data. Based on the GeoKG, we propose a bilateral LSTM-CRF (long short-term memory- conditional random field) model to achieve natural language question answering for VGEs and conduct experiments on the method. The results prove that the method of intelligent interaction based on the knowledge graph can bridge the distance between people and virtual environments.
