Abstract The study of aerodynamics and heat transfer in the recuperator convective stage of the recuperative-burner unit with the jet leakage of the flue gas flow onto the outer cylindrical surface is carried out. Numerical modeling of the problem was carried out in a three-dimensional formulation using the ANSYS Fluent software package. It was found that in the original design of the recuperative-burner unit, there is a significant unevenness of heat transfer along the length and perimeter of the working surface of the convective stage. In the initial section of the annular gap, a stagnant zone with the lowest heat transfer rate is observed. To eliminate the stagnant zone and to intensify heat transfer on the surface in this area, it is proposed to make the entrance to the perforated pipe in the form of an inner quarter of a torus; to install smooth protrusions on its surface; to locate an annular flow divider on the inner surface of the heat transfer wall, which separates the front part of the annular channel with formation of a set of vortex chambers. The research results are presented.

A comprehensive series of emissions measurements were taken from two pieces of equipment used by the Canadian Forces. A field kitchen burner unit and the engine from the Light Armoured Vehicle III (LAVIII) were operated using two base fuels: low and ultra low sulphur diesel fuel blended with three different biofuels. Methylesters from canola, tallow and yellow grease were mixed in a range of volumetric proportions from 0 to 20%. Additionally, both very low sulphur diesel and aviation turbine fuel (JP-8) were tested against neat low sulphur diesel fuel. The complete chemical analysis conducted on all test fuels will not be presented here. A full range of gaseous emission measurements were obtained including oxides of nitrogen, unburnt hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and dioxide and limited sulphur dioxide measurements. Two means of monitoring particulate matter were used with one proving to be more effective than the other. Novel techniques were used to obtain the burner unit emissions results and the AVL 8-mode test sequence was applied to the Caterpillar engine from the LAVIII. Although emission trends were detected, levels were often on the margins of perceptibility of the gas analysis system, and atmospheric conditions were challenging. Nevertheless, a methodology was developed and refined. Some correlations were made between the chemical analysis and emissions results. The testing will allow the Canadian Army to estimate its emissions footprint.

This study focuses on fundamental characteristics of DME combustion, aiming at the development of low-NOx multi-ports burner. Multi-ports burner consists of a fuel-port and surrounding multi-air-ports. The strong re-circulation flow is formed by the small air jets, thus the short flames form a cluster on every burner unit so that the thermal NOx generation is significantly suppressed to a very low level. The NOx emission of the DME from the co-axial diffusion burner was over 130ppm beyond the level of the other fuels. On the other hand; NOx emission of DME from the newly advanced multi-ports burner was reduced to 60ppm at 0% O2. With the help of the low-NOx combustion system, referred to as the tube-nested combustion, NOx emission of DME was further reduced to 20ppm at 0% O2.

The results of experimental investigation of the basic parameters of one-burner, 1/18 sector of a full-scale annular combustor of the “Turboatom” GTE-115 gas turbine unit are presented. Specifics of fuel burnup and formation of toxic pollutants in premixed combustion using a pilot diffusion burner are presented. Generalized dependences of combustor characteristics versus flow parameters and an optimized algorithm of combustor loading are illustrated.
