Learning in advance? Interspecific recognition ability in male Eurasian blackcaps

Interspecific aggression is common in bird communities. It is thought to be a consequence of learned behavior or misdirected intraspecific aggression. In the former case birds acquire the ability to identify individuals of other species by social learning of species-specific traits during interactions with heterospecifics in a shared habitat. I conducted a two-choice song playback experiment to investigate the role of associating signals from two sensory modalities, auditory and visual, in shaping the agonistic response of male Eurasian Blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla) to simulated male Garden Warbler (S. borin) intruders. I measured focal males’ response to playbacks to the song of a Blackcap or a Garden Warbler while giving them a choice between stuffed male models of both species presented in their territories. The experiments were carried out in early spring, before the arrival of Garden Warblers from Africa. I found that male Blackcaps were able to associate species-specific songs with species-specific plumage types. The ability to associate signals characterized not only experienced after-second-year old males, but also second-year old males that had not had the opportunity to defend breeding territories against heterospecifics. This suggests that second-year old male Blackcaps acquire the ability to associate Garden Warbler song with plumage before they use this skill when defending territory during their first breeding episode. Male Blackcaps do not mistake male Garden Warblers for males of their species, but rather learn these associations during the first months of life. However, the possibility that these associations are innate cannot be excluded.

Cranial ornamentation in the Late Cretaceous nodosaurid ankylosaurHungarosaurus

Bony cranial ornamentation is developed by many groups of vertebrates, including ankylosaur dinosaurs. To date, the morphology and ontogenetic origin of ankylosaurian cranial ornamentation has primarily focused on a limited number of species from only one of the two major lineages, Ankylosauridae. For members of the sister group Nodosauridae, less is known. Here, we provide new details of the cranial anatomy of the nodosauridHungarosaurusfrom the Santonian of Europe. Based on a number of previously described and newly identified fragmentary skulls and skull elements, we recognize three different size classes ofHungarosaurus. We interpret these size classes as representing different stages of ontogeny. Cranial ornamentation is already well-developed in the earliest ontogenetic stage represented herein, suggesting that the presence of outgrowths may have played a role in intra- and interspecific recognition. We find no evidence that cranial ornamentation inHungarosaurusinvolves the contribution of coossified osteoderms. Instead, available evidence indicates that cranial ornamentation forms as a result of the elaboration of individual elements. Although individual differences and sexual dimorphism cannot be excluded, the observed variation inHungarosauruscranial ornamentation appears to be associated with ontogeny.

Evolution and role of the follicular epidermal gland system in non-ophidian squamates

Many lizard and amphisbaenian lineages possess follicular glands in the dermis of the inner thighs and/or the area anterior to the cloaca. These tubular glands produce a holocrine secretion that finds its way to the external world through pore-bearing scales (femoral and/or preanal pores). Secretions are composed of proteins and many lipophilic compounds that may function as chemosignals in lizard and amphisbaenian communication. In recent years, we have begun to develop an understanding of the adaptive significance of these secretions, and they are currently thought to play an important role in a variety of processes in these animals. While it appears that epidermal gland secretions function in intra- and interspecific recognition and territoriality, research has focused largely on their role in mate assessment. Despite these recent studies, our knowledge on the true role of the chemicals found in epidermal secretions remains poorly studied, and there are many possible avenues for future research on this topic. Here, we review the literature on the follicular epidermal glands of non-ophidian squamates and provide a first taxon-wide overview of their distribution.

Introgression of wing pattern alleles and speciation via homoploid hybridization in Heliconius butterflies: a review of evidence from the genome

The diverse Müllerian mimetic wing patterns of neotropical Heliconius (Nymphalidae) have been proposed to be not only aposematic signals to potential predators, but also intra- and interspecific recognition signals that allow the butterflies to maintain their specific identities, and which perhaps drive the process of speciation, as well. Adaptive features under differential selection that also serve as cues for assortative mating have been referred to as ‘magic traits’, which can drive ecological speciation. Such traits are expected to exhibit allelic differentiation between closely related species with ongoing gene flow, whereas unlinked neutral traits are expected to be homogenized to a greater degree by introgression. However, recent evidence suggests that interspecific hybridization among Heliconius butterflies may have resulted in adaptive introgression of these very same traits across species boundaries, and in the evolution of new species by homoploid hybrid speciation. The theory and data supporting various aspects of the apparent paradox of ‘magic trait’ introgression are reviewed, with emphasis on population genomic comparisons of Heliconius melpomene and its close relatives.

Chemosensory species recognition may reduce the frequency of hybridization between native and introduced lizards

The introduction of alien species to islands by human activity can cause catastrophic consequences for small populations of island endemics. Hybridization between the endangered and endemic insular lizard Podarcis atrata (Boscá, 1916) from the Columbretes Islands (Mediterranean, Spain) and the common mainland lizard Podarcis hispanica (Steindachner, 1870) could potentially occur because mainland haplotypes have already been detected in the islands, the two species are closely genetically related, and the frequency of visitors to these islands is increasing. However, reproductive decisions of lizards are often mediated by species recognition mechanisms based on chemical cues. On the basis of this observation, even if some mainland P. hispanica lizards were introduced to the islands, interspecific recognition might make rare an eventual hybridization with the insular P. atrata. We examined interspecific chemical recognition between the insular P. atrata and the mainland P. hispanica. Our results showed that lizards of both sexes responded more strongly (i.e., directed a significantly higher number of tongue flicks) to scents of conspecific individuals than to scents of heterospecifics. Chemical recognition of conspecifics by endemic island P. atrata lizards may reduce the occurrence of hybridization with introduced mainland P. hispanica lizards and protect the insular gene pool.

Recognition of other species' aerial alarm calls: speaking the same language or learning another?

Alarm calls given by other species potentially provide a network of information about danger, but little is known about the role of acoustic similarity compared with learning in recognition of heterospecific calls. In particular, the aerial ‘hawk’ alarm calls of passerines provide a textbook example of signal design because many species have converged on a design that thwarts eavesdropping by hawks, and call similarity might therefore allow recognition. We measured the response of fairy-wrens ( Malurus cyaneus ) to playback of acoustically similar scrubwren ( Sericornis frontalis ) aerial alarm calls. First, if call similarity prompts escape independent of learning, then fairy-wrens should flee to playback of scrubwren calls outside their geographical range. However, fairy-wrens fled only in sympatry. Second, if call similarity is necessary for learning heterospecific calls, then fairy-wrens should not respond to sympatric species with different calls. We found, on the contrary, that fairy-wrens fled to the very different aerial alarm calls of a honeyeater ( Phylidonyris novaehollandiae ). Furthermore, response to the honeyeater depended on the specific structure of the call, not acoustic similarity. Overall, call similarity was neither sufficient nor necessary for interspecific recognition, implying learning is essential in the complex task of sifting the acoustic world for cues about danger.

Mechanisms of heterospecific recognition in avian mobbing calls

Some birds emit special calls, referred to as mobbing calls, when they detect a predator in their area. These calls are easily localisable and function to rally other individuals to help chase out a threatening intruder. Interestingly, individuals may respond to the mobbing calls of other sympatric species. To understand the mechanism underlying interspecific recognition it is essential to determine whether birds also respond to the mobbing calls of allopatric species. If, as has been suggested, learning is important for call recognition, then calls from allopatric species should not evoke mobbing. If, however, there are intrinsic (and possibly convergent) characteristics of mobbing calls, then novel calls from allopatric species should evoke mobbing. We conducted two playback experiments with apostlebirds (Struthidea cinera, Family Corcoracidae), Australian mud-nesters, to understand mechanisms underlying mobbing-call recognition. The first demonstrated that allopatric mobbing calls could elicit a response significantly greater than control stimuli, but less than that elicited by playback of conspecific calls. The second demonstrated that the dominant frequency was critical for eliciting mobbing, rather than the commonly assumed broad bandwidth. Taken together, these results suggest that experience with a particular species' call is not essential to elicit mobbing; rather, intrinsic aspects of the calls themselves may explain heterospecific recognition.
