In aquaculture, the density of fish stock, use of feeding, and surrounding environmental conditions can easily result in an excessive concentration of harmful compounds that require continuous monitoring. Chemical sensors are available for most of these compounds, however, operative conditions and continuous monitoring in water make the development of sensors suitable for long and unattended deployments difficult. A possible solution is the development of engineered automatic labs where the uptake of sample and the contact with water is reduced and the use of a minimal quantity of reagents enables the implementation of reliable chemical assays. In this paper, a platform for automatic chemical assays is presented. The concept is demonstrated with the detection of nitrites based on the well-known colorimetric Griess reaction. The platform is centered around a lab-on-a-chip where reagents and water samples are mixed. The color of the reaction product is measured with low-cost optoelectronic components. Results show the feasibility of the approach with a minimum detectable concentration of about 0.1 mg/L which is below the tolerance level for aquaculture farms.

Proper maxillomandibular relationship registration can be clinically challenging during a digital workflow in full-arch rehabilitations. This dental technique requires the manufacturing and use of a hybrid surgical guide custom scanning device, indicated to be used during implant placement surgery, in addition to being used to simultaneously register the maxillomandibular relationship and transfer the implants’ 3D positioning, ensuring a fully digital workflow in full-arch implant-supported prosthesis rehabilitation. The sequence of steps presented here will allow dentists and dental technicians to conduct rehabilitations from denture to the final implant-supported prosthesis using a full-digital protocol, using a minimal quantity of intraoral devices and digital tools.

The genetic diversity of the parasite Echinococcus multilocularis, the infectious agent of alveolar echinococcosis, is generally assessed on adult worms after fox necropsy. We aimed to investigate E. multilocularis polymorphism through the microsatellite EmsB marker using a noninvasive approach. We tested batches of isolated eggs (1, 5, and 10) from 19 carnivore fecal samples collected in a rural town located in a highly endemic area in France to determine the best strategy to adopt using a minimal quantity of parasite DNA while avoiding genetic profile overlapping in the analysis. Several molecular controls were performed to formally identify the Taeniidae eggs. In total, 112 egg batches were isolated and 102 EmsB electrophoregrams were obtained in duplicate. Quality sorting was performed through the Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between each EmsB duplicate. Forty-nine batches with r > 0.9 remained in the analysis, mainly 5- or 10-egg batches. Three EmsB profiles were emphasized by hierarchical clustering and matched those from human lesions and adult worms previously genotyped and collected in the same area. We show that the genetic diversity of the parasite can be assessed from isolated E. multilocularis eggs in a spatiotemporal context using a noninvasive approach.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is mainly transmitted through respiratory droplets from positive subjects to susceptible hosts or by direct contact with an infected individual. Our study focuses on the in vitro minimal time of viral absorption as well as the minimal quantity of virus able to establish a persistent infection in Vero E6 cells. We observed that 1 min of in vitro virus exposure is sufficient to generate a cytopathic effect in cells after 7 days of infection, even at a multiplicity of infection (MOI) value of 0.01. Being aware that our findings have been obtained using an in vitro cellular model, we demonstrated that short-time exposures and low viral concentrations are able to cause infection, thus opening questions about the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmissibility even following short contact times.

Post operative pain management is always a challenge for ano-rectal surgeons. Haemorrhoidectomy is often involved with severe post operative pain and discomfort during defecation. Ayurvedic surgeon most of the time depends of contemporary medical science and uses analgesics, which has its own adverse effects. Many times mere oral ayurvedic medicines are not sufficient to mange post operative pain. Basti (enema with medicines) is regarded as best treatment for vata dosh vitiation. Vata dosh vitiation is the main cause for the pain. In post operative wounds also, trauma and blood loss lead to vata vitiation and causes pain. There are different types of basti’s explained in the classics. Matrabasti (enema with medicated oil) is a type of Sneha Basti which can be given in all seasons without any strict regimen of Diet. It is a procedure where a minimal quantity of medicated oil or medicated ghee is used in the form of enema.  Post operative wound will aggravate vata and lead to pain. Hence matrabasti which is having minimal medicine is tried in post operative cases of haemorrhoidectomy. This increases time taken for the onset of pain after haemorrhoidectomy and also helps in easy evacuation of stools in post operative period.

AbstractWith increasing environmental concerns, the substitution of mineral oil-based cutting fluid has become an urgent issue. Using vegetable soybean oil as base fluid, nanofluid cutting fluids (NFCFs) were prepared by adding different weight concentrations of nanographite particles (NGPs), and their penetration and lubrication performances were studied. A novel simulated tool-chip slit with micrometer-sized geometry was manufactured to evaluate and quantify the penetration rate of the NFCFs by image analysis approach. Moreover, a large number of comparative experiments on the closed-type broaching machine were carried out to compare the performance of the proposed NFCFs and a commercial cutting fluid in terms of cutting force, workpiece surface roughness, and metal chip. It is found that there is an optimal NGP concentration in NFCF for practical cutting applications. When the concentration of NGP is 0.4 wt%, the broaching process lubrication exhibits an ideal mixed lubricate state, resulting in minimal friction resistance, and thus, both the cutting force and chip curling angle reach their corresponding best values. Moreover, the proposed NGP-based vegetable-oil cutting fluid exhibits excellent environment-friendliness and low-cost consumption in the minimal quantity lubrication (MQL) method; this demonstrates its potential for replacing the traditional broaching cutting fluid.
