Zirconia (ZrO2) aerogels show excellent insulating performance and have been widely applied as a thermal protector in furnaces, nuclear reactors, and spacecraft. The nondestructive determination of their interior microstructure is significant for evaluating their mechanical and insulating performance. In this study, we performed nondestructive structural investigation of an yttria-stabilized ZrO2 fiber insulation tile using synchrotron X-ray in-line phase-contrast microtomography at a pixel resolution of 6.5 µm. Taking advantage of the edge enhancement of phase-contrast imaging, single yttria-stabilized ZrO2 fibers were clearly distinguished; furthermore, interior aggregates were nondestructively observed at this spatial resolution. This work demonstrates the advantages and potential of synchrotron X-ray microtomography for the structural analysis of porous ceramic materials. By combining higher-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources and CCD detectors with higher spatial and temporal resolutions, we anticipate that we can further understand the relationship between aerogel microstructure and function, especially under in-service conditions at high temperatures.

Zirconia fiber not only can be used for a long time in 1600°C, but also has low thermal conductivity at high temperature. Due to the excellent insulation performance, it has a broad application prospect in aerospace, aviation, energy and other areas. In the present study, we chose yttrium stabilized zirconia fibers and nanometer zirconia powder as main material and adding soluble starch, zirconium sol as low temperature and high temperature binder. Rigid zirconia fiber board was prepared by material slurry, filter shaping, stripping drying and high temperature calcination. After high temperature calcination of 1600°C for 12h, sample pore are mainly concentrated in 25-75μm, bending strength performance is best when the adding amount of nanometer zirconia powder was 7%, the thermal conductivity is only 0.132 W·m-1·K-1 at 1400°C.

The zirconia fiber reinforced ZrO2 porous composites have been fabricated by precursor infiltration and pyrolysis techniques. The rheological properties and ceramization mechanism of ZrO2 preceramic solution were observed. The results showed that with the increase of infiltration/ pyrolysis cycles the density of as-prepared composites increased. But the compression strength of composite firstly increased and then decreased, which indicates mechanical properties of composites relevant with density, fiber/matrix interface and porous structure. SEM observation revealed fiber pull-out within samples through 17 infiltration/pyrolysis cycles, which would make contributions to the enhanced mechanical properties of composites.
