Abstract Water pipe networks have a large number of branch joints. Branch joint shunting generates vortices in the fluid, which excite the pipe wall to produce a type of branch noise. The branch noise is coupled with the leak source signal through the pipe. Here, a novel leak location protocol based on the complex-valued FastICA method (C-FastICA) is proposed to address the leak location problem under the branch noise interference. The C-FastICA, a complex-value domain blind deconvolution algorithm, effectively extended the cost function, constraint function, and iteration rules of the instantaneous linear FastICA into the complex-valued domain. The C-FastICA method was used to realize the separation of branch noise and leak source signal. The experimental results showed that the separation efficiency of the C-FastICA was higher than that of time-domain blind convolution separation (T-BCS). Furthermore, the relative location error of the C-FastICA method to the leak point was less than 14.238%, which was significantly lower than in traditional T-BCS and direct cross-correlation (DCC) technology.

Abstract Blind deconvolution (BD) is an effective algorithm for enhancing the impulsive signature of rolling bearings. As a convex optimization problem, the existing BDs have poor optimization performance and cannot effectively enhance the impulsive signature excited by weak faults. Moreover, the existing BDs require manual derivation of the calculation process, which brings great inconvenience to the researcher's personalized design of the maximization criterion. A new BD algorithm based on backward automatic differentiation (BAD) is proposed, which is named BADBD. The calculation process does not require manual derivation so a general solution of BDs based on different maximization criteria is realized. BADBD constructs multiple cascaded filters to filter the raw vibration signal, which makes up for the deficiency of single filter performance. The filter coefficients are determined by Adam algorithm, which improves the optimization performance of the proposed BADBD. BADBD is compared with classic BDs by synthesized and real vibration signals. The results reveal superior capability of BADBD to enhance the impulsive signature and the fault diagnosis performance is significantly better than the classic BDs.

Minimum correlated generalized Lp/Lq deconvolution (MCG-Lp/Lq-D) is an important tool to detect periodic impulses in vibration mixture. It is proved to be a more stable technique than maximum correlated kurtosis deconvolution (MCKD) to recover the fault impulse under strong noise conditions. However, MCG-Lp/Lq-D still has limitations. One of the necessary conditions for the success of MCG-Lp/Lq-D is to provide a precise period of fault. An imprecise prior period will lead to performance degradation or even failure of the method. Therefore, in this paper, a MCG-Lp/Lq-D with adaptive fault period estimation capability is proposed, adaptive minimum correlated generalized Lp/Lq deconvolution (AMCG-Lp/Lq-D). The proposed method uses the autocorrelation function of envelope signal to estimate the fault period adaptively in each iteration and then takes the estimated period as the input parameter of MCG-Lp/Lq-D for the next iteration optimization. The proposed method does not require precise prior fault period input, which greatly improves the fault recovery accuracy and application range of MCG-Lp/Lq-D. Eventually, simulated and experimental data verify the effectiveness and superiority of AMCG-Lp/Lq-D.
