ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the predictive CT features of spread through air spaces (STAS) in patients with small-sized lung adenocarcinoma.MethodsFrom January 2017 to May 2019, patients with confirmed pathology of small-sized lung adenocarcinoma (less than or equal to 2 cm) and who underwent surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical, pathological, and surgical information and CT features were analyzed.ResultsA total of 47 patients with STAS (males, 61.7%; mean age, 56 ± 8years) and 143 patients without STAS (males, 58%; mean age, 53 ± 11 years) were included. Pathologically, papillary, micropapillary, solid predominant subtypes, and vascular and pleural invasion were most commonly observed features in the STAS group. Radiologically, higher consolidation tumor ratio (CTR), presence of spiculation, satellites, ground glass ribbon sign, pleural attachment, and unclear tumor–lung interface were more commonly observed features in the STAS group. CTR, presence of ground glass ribbons and pleural connection, and absence of cystic airspaces were considered as stable predictors of STAS in multivariate logistic models. The receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis for predicting STAS demonstrated higher area under the curve (AUC) in the model that used CTR (0.760, 95% confidence interval, 0.69–0.83) for predicting STAS than in the model that used long diameter of entire lesion (0.640).ConclusionsCTR is the best CT sign for predicting STAS in small-sized lung adenocarcinoma. The ground glass ribbon is a newly found indicator and has the potential for predicting STAS.

The features and generality of the effect of hydrostatic pressure and annealing on the surface relief of the contact and non-contact side of the Fe77Ni1Si9B13 metal glass ribbon are revealed. The relationship between transformation of the ribbon surface inhomogeneities under these effects and possible formation of nanocrystalline regions are analyzed. We found that the evolution of the surface inhomogeneities at the contact side of the ribbon after annealing procedure leads to appearing of discrete-sized fractions in these regions

The present study investigation, our results on characterization of commercially pure-Ti alloy brazed with metallic glass ribbons of Ti20Zr20Cu60-xNix (x = 30, 40, and 50) metallic glass ribbons were produced using a vacuum melt spinner. These ribbons were then used as filler materials for vacuum brazing of two Ti alloy plates at 1268, 1277 and 1279 K for a period of 10 min. Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and the energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The as-spun ribbons showed fully amorphous structure when examined on both surfaces by XRD and also verified by TEM investigation. The brazing joint of two Ti-plates using the metallic glass ribbon when brazed with Ni50 was found to be of very high strength. FESEM characterization of the cross-section of the brazed joints shows sub-micron size grains uniformly distributed in the matrix with brighter appearance. FESEM and EDX analysis revealed that the sub-micron grains are rich in Ti & Ni while the matrix phase mainly consisted of Ti. BSE image along with EDS Analysis indicated that the brazed joint has a presence of NiTi2 and Cu2 (Ni Zr) phases which could be responsible for increase in the strength of the brazed joint.
