Disturbance is common in natural ecosystems, but increasingly defines them. While there are many descriptions for the dynamics of an ecosystem's response to disturbance, there are few descriptions for the dynamics of the disturbance itself. I describe a novel application of a model based on the production of amplitude envelopes in acoustics and electronic music synthesis, with varying parameters Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release (ADSR). I show that varying the parameters of the ADSR model is sufficient to produce and vary the qualitative disturbance regimes described by previous authors, and is capable of producing dynamics not previously considered. I tested the utility of the ADSR model by applying it to a logistic growth model. I found that manipulating the attack and release parameters of the ADSR model changes the population dynamics estimated by these models. This implies that responses to disturbance are determined not only by the resilience and resistance of the ecological system, but also the dynamics of the disturbance itself. My hope is that the ADSR model will prove useful to researchers in either describing disturbances in long-term ecological data, or in producing disturbances for simulations or experiments.

Abstract It is a challenge for the dynamic inspection of railway route for freight car transporting cargo that out-of-gauge. One possible way is using the inspection frame installed in the inspection train to simulate the whole procedure for cargo transportation, which costs a lot of manpower and material resources as well as time. To overcome the above problem, this paper proposes an augmented reality (AR) based dynamic inspection method for visualized railway routing of freight car with out-of-gauge. First, the envelope model of the dynamic moving train with out-of-gauge cargo is generated by using the orbital spectrum of the railway, and the envelope model is matched with a piece of homemade calibration equipment located on the position of the railway that needs to be inspected. Then, the structure from motion (SFM) algorithm is used to reconstruct the environment where the virtual envelope model occludes the buildings or equipment along the railway. Finally, the distance function is adopted to calculate the distance between the obstacle and the envelope of the freight car with out-of-gauge, determining whether the freight car can pass a certain line. The experimental results show that the proposed method performs well for the route selection of out-of-gauge cargo transportation with low cost, high precision, and high efficiency. Moreover, the digital data of the environments along the railway and the envelope of the freight car can be reused, which will increase the digitalization and intelligence for route selection of out-of-gauge cargo transportation.

In this study, a hysteresis envelope mathematical model for the double extended end-plate bolted beam-to-column joint is proposed. The aim of a proposed joint model is to provide a more realistic behaviour of steel frames under seismic loading by using nonlinear static pushover analysis. The hysteresis envelope model defines the ratios between the monotonic properties of the joints and the properties of the joints during cyclic deformation. The proposed models are based on the hysteresis curves of the joints obtained by numerical simulations. The numerical model takes into account the geometric nonlinearity of the connecting elements, preloading of bolts, contacts between plates and bolts, and nonlinear properties of steel. Nonlinear static pushover analyses of steel frames are performed where the behaviour of the joints is described using the proposed hysteresis envelope models. The results are compared with the nonlinear static pushover analyses of steel frames with a trilinear monotonic joint model. Based on the results, the values of maximum peak ground acceleration for moment-resisting frames with the monotonic model of joints and hysteresis envelope model are estimated.

AbstractThis manuscript is related to the construction of relativistic core-envelope model for spherically symmetric charged anisotropic compact objects. The polytropic equation of state is considered for core, while it is linear in the case of envelope. We present that core, envelope and the Reissner Nordstr$$\ddot{o}$$ o ¨ m exterior regions of stars match smoothly. It has been verified that all physical parameters are well behaved in the core and envelope region for the compact stars SAX J1808.4-3658 and 4U1608-52. Various physical parameters inside star are discussed herein, non-singularity and continuity at the junction has been catered as well. Impact of charged compact object together with core-envelope model on the mass, radius and compactification factor is described by graphical representation in both core and envelop regions. The stability of the model is worked out with the help of Tolman–Oppenheimer–Volkoff equations and radial sound speed.

Many biological microswimmers locomote by periodically beating the densely packed cilia on their cell surface in a wave-like fashion. While the swimming mechanisms of ciliated microswimmers have been extensively studied both from the analytical and the numerical point of view, optimisation of the ciliary motion of microswimmers has received limited attention, especially for non-spherical shapes. In this paper, using an envelope model for the microswimmer, we numerically optimise the ciliary motion of a ciliate with an arbitrary axisymmetric shape. Forward solutions are found using a fast boundary-integral method, and the efficiency sensitivities are derived using an adjoint-based method. Our results show that a prolate microswimmer with a $2\,{:}\,1$ aspect ratio shares similar optimal ciliary motion as the spherical microswimmer, yet the swimming efficiency can increase two-fold. More interestingly, the optimal ciliary motion of a concave microswimmer can be qualitatively different from that of the spherical microswimmer, and adding a constraint to the cilia length is found to improve, on average, the efficiency for such swimmers.

AbstractThe aerospace industry utilizes nickel-based super-alloys due to its high level of strength and corrosion resistance. To evaluate milling strategies regarding tool wear, the prediction of forces during these cutting operations is essential. This comprises the determination of the undeformed chip thickness. Due to the complex interdependencies of tool engagements, the determination of these thicknesses is challenging. A geometric physically-based simulation system was extended by a novel time-discrete envelope model to increase the precision of the calculated undeformed chip thicknesses. In order to take tool wear into account, digitized topographies of cutting inserts in different states of tool wear were modelled.
