It is important to identify cognitive and achievement characteristics that differentiate students who are twice exceptional because they are gifted and have a learning disability (2e-LD) from gifted and average ability peers because this information informs empirically-based identification and support systems for this population. In this study, I classified school-age participants ( N = 3,865) in the nationally representative standardization sample for the Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ IV) Tests of Cognitive Abilities and Achievement as potentially gifted, 2e-LD, or of average ability based on their WJ IV performance. I compared mean levels of performance, strengths and weaknesses, and intraindividual heterogeneity across 2e-LD, gifted, and average-ability groups. The 2e-LD group demonstrated greater heterogeneity in performance, and their strengths and weaknesses were largely consistent with past research and writing on 2e-LD characteristics. Results support some 2e-LD identification recommendations from the literature and highlight the potential benefits of individualized assessment, dual differentiation, and a de-emphasis of speeded academic tasks.

We show that if $(X,\Vert \cdot \Vert )$ is a Banach space that admits an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm and the set of all norm-attaining functionals is residual then the dual norm $\Vert \cdot \Vert ^{\ast }$ on $X^{\ast }$ is Fréchet at the points of a dense subset of $X^{\ast }$ . This answers the main open problem in a paper by Guirao, Montesinos and Zizler [‘Remarks on the set of norm-attaining functionals and differentiability’, Studia Math. 241 (2018), 71–86].

Chromophobe carcinoma constitutes a small subset of all renal carcinomas. Within this category, rare tumors with divergent differentiation have been recognized. Herein, we report a rare case of composite chromophobe and collecting duct carcinoma and describe its pathologic and clinical features.

Students who are gifted and have a learning disability (GLD) may not be identified, in part because of disagreement regarding appropriate identification criteria. In this study, suggested GLD identification criteria were applied to a nationally representative sample of school-age students to determine the number and characteristics of students identified by each set of GLD criteria. Many but not all students identified as potentially GLD had relative weaknesses in lower order processing abilities and achievement, as hypothesized for this population. Students also exhibited academic strengths, which suggests dual differentiation would be appropriate. Commonly used intraindividual discrepancy criteria identified most potentially gifted students as potentially learning disabled; therefore, these are not valid stand-alone criteria to identify learning disabilities in gifted youth. Results suggest it may be best to combine alternative gifted criteria, an intraindividual LD criterion, and examination of absolute deficits in processing and achievement. Additional implications for research and practice are discussed.

Some gastric carcinomas show composite features of neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) and α-fetoprotein (AFP)-producing carcinoma, which are very rare; only a few cases have been reported to date. We reviewed an additional 2 such cases of gastric carcinoma, which were both advanced aggressive tumors showing regional lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis. Both cases were accompanied by ordinary adenocarcinoma forms, implying that they had preceded the NEC and AFP-producing carcinoma components. A distinctive feature was the finding suggestive of dual differentiation of tumor cells to neuroendocrine and AFP-producing phenotypes, which was identified even in the metastatic tumor in the regional lymph node. Because both tumors predominantly showed poorly differentiated forms, the final pathologic diagnosis must rely on the immunohistochemistry. Pathologists should always keep in mind the existence of such tumors for the correct diagnosis of some gastric carcinomas with specific phenotypes, especially in pathologic diagnosis on biopsy.

Adenomyoepithelioma of the breast is an uncommon tumor characterized by dual differentiation into luminal cells and myoepithelial cells. A spectrum of histologic patterns is observed among these tumors and even in different areas of individual tumors. These lesions can be diagnostically challenging, especially when a core needle biopsy is performed, because of the heterogeneity of adenomyoepitheliomas. Recognition of the biphasic cellular elements and the characteristic overall architecture of the tumors in combination with immunohistochemistry are essential to establish the correct diagnosis. Although most tumors have a benign clinical course, local recurrences, malignant transformations, and distant metastases have been reported. All the reported malignant adenomyoepitheliomas with metastases have shown significant cytologic atypia and brisk mitotic rates. Therefore, adequate sampling of the tumor to identify these features is necessary. A complete excision with adequate margins would lower the chance of local recurrence or potential for metastasis.
