Abstract The effect of equilibrium poloidal flow and pressure gradient on the m/n = 2/1 (m is the poloidal mode number and n is the toroidal mode number) tearing mode instability for tokamak plasmas is investigated. Based on the condition of ≠0 ( is plasma pressure), the radial part of motion equation is derived and approximately solved for large poloidal mode numbers (m). By solving partial differential equation (Whittaker equation) containing second order singularity, the tearing mode stability index Δ′ is obtained. It is shown that, the effect of equilibrium poloidal flow and pressure gradient has the adverse effect on the tearing mode instability when the pressure gradient is nonzero. The poloidal equilibrium flow with pressure perturbation partially reduces the stability of the classical tearing mode. But the larger pressure gradient in a certain poloidal flow velocity range can abate the adverse influence of equilibrium poloidal flow and pressure gradient. The numerical results do also indicate that the derivative of pressure gradient has a significant influence on the determination of instability region of the poloidal flow with pressure perturbation.

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light provides a new degree of freedom for carrying information. The stable propagation and generation of OAM modes are necessary for the fields of OAM-based optical communications and microscopies. In this review, we focus on discussing the novel fibers that are suitable for stable OAM mode transmission and conversion. The fundamental theory of fiber modes is introduced first. Then, recent progress on a multitude of fiber designs that can stably guide or generate OAM modes is reviewed. Currently, the mode crosstalk is regarded as the main issue that damages OAM mode stability. Therefore, the coupled-mode theory and coupled-power power theory are introduced to analyze OAM modes crosstalk. Finally, the challenges and prospects of the applications of OAM fibers are discussed.

AbstractEinstein–Maxwell-scalar models allow for different classes of black hole solutions, depending on the non-minimal coupling function $$f(\phi )$$ f ( ϕ ) employed, between the scalar field and the Maxwell invariant. Here, we address the linear mode stability of the black hole solutions obtained recently for a quartic coupling function, $$f(\phi )=1+\alpha \phi ^4$$ f ( ϕ ) = 1 + α ϕ 4 (Blázquez-Salcedo et al. in Phys. Lett. B 806:135493, 2020). Besides the bald Reissner–Nordström solutions, this coupling allows for two branches of scalarized black holes, termed cold and hot, respectively. For these three branches of black holes we calculate the spectrum of quasinormal modes. It consists of polar scalar-led modes, polar and axial electromagnetic-led modes, and polar and axial gravitational-led modes. We demonstrate that the only unstable mode present is the radial scalar-led mode of the cold branch. Consequently, the bald Reissner–Nordström branch and the hot scalarized branch are both mode-stable. The non-trivial scalar field in the scalarized background solutions leads to the breaking of the degeneracy between axial and polar modes present for Reissner–Nordström solutions. This isospectrality is only slightly broken on the cold branch, but it is strongly broken on the hot branch.
