Abstract. Dirgantara AP, Megantara EN, Husodo T, Febrianto P, Wulandari I, Shanida SS. 2021. The existence of Asian small-clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus Illiger, 1815) in the UCPS Hydropower, Cianjur, West Java. Biodiversitas 22: 4391-4401. Little information about the existence of small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinereus) in Indonesia is available. Small-clawed otter is the top predator and biological indicator of wetland health. However, the small-clawed otter population in the world has decreased due to anthropogenic factors. This study aims to reveal 1) estimate the population size of small-clawed otters and 2) the small-clawed otter signs at the UCPS Hydropower construction site, Cianjur, West Java. This study used a qualitative approach in February-April 2017. Sign surveys (feces, footprints, leftovers, and dens) and camera trapping were applied in this study. There were 32 signs with details of 21 feces, eight footprints, and three dens. The estimation of small-clawed otter population size at UCPS Hydropower ranges from 5-14 individuals in total scattered in the Citali-Cisokan, Cilengkong, and Cirumamis rivers. In addition, the discovery of infant and bedding repair activities shows that the habitat in the UCPS Hydropower area supports the daily needs of small-clawed otters, especially in terms of breeding and shelter. Further studies are needed regarding the impact of the UCPS Hydropower construction on the existence of small-clawed otters, especially in the overlapping between small-clawed otter habitat and the UCPS Hydropower construction sites, by monitoring and making wildlife management policies.

The only means of conserving a species or a habitat in a human-dominated landscape is through promoting coexistence while minimizing conflict. To achieve this, it is vital to understand how wildlife are impacted by direct and indirect human activities. Such information is relatively rare from areas with high human densities. To investigate how animals respond to altered ecological conditions in human-dominated landscapes, we focussed on a wild herbivore of conservation concern in Krishnasaar Conservation Area (KrCA) in Nepal. Here, blackbuck Anticope cervicapra, a generalist grazer, lives in refugia located in a growing human population. We studied the impacts of humans on habitat-use and behaviour of blackbuck. We laid 250 x 250 m grid cells in the entire KrCA and carried out indirect sign surveys with three replications for habitat-use assessment. We observed herds of blackbuck for 89 hours in different possible habitat types, location and time of the day using scan sampling methods. Our habitat-use survey showed that habitats under intensive human use were hardly used by blackbuck, even when high-quality forage was available. In areas with low levels of human activity, natural risk factors, primarily habitat openness, was the major predictor of habitat-use. Interestingly, livestock presence positively influenced habitat-use by blackbuck. Blackbuck were substantially more vigilant when they were in forest than in grassland, again indicating an influence of risk. Overall, blackbuck appear to be sensitive to risk associated with both natural and anthropogenic factors. Our findings have direct implications for managing human-wildlife interactions in this landscape, specifically regarding strategies for livestock grazing in habitats highly used by blackbuck and concerning predictions of how changing land-use will impact long-term persistence of blackbuck. Our work suggests that wild herbivores may be able to persist in landscapes with high human densities so long as there are refuges where levels of human activity are relatively low.

AbstractThe Himalayan Monal is a conservation priority species in its entire distribution range. Its population is declining in many areas due to various anthropogenic threats. The information on species distribution and its abundance is lacking in many areas which are vital for conservation and management planning. Hence, through the present study, we have assessed the abundance and occupancy of Himalayan monal in Uttarkashi district (Uttarakhand). We used camera traps and conventional sign surveys for documenting the species during 2018-2019. We installed a total of 69 camera traps (2819 trap nights) and surveyed 54 trails (650 km) which represents entire habitat and topographic variability of the landscape. The occupancy and detection probability was modelled using the habitat variables. The top model showed that occupancy probability of Himalayan monal was positively influenced by the slope (β =27.52 ±16.25) and negatively influenced by Reserve Forest (RF) (β= −8.14 SE ± 4.99). The observed naïve occupancy of Himalayan Monal was 0.69 in the study area, which was slightly lower than the estimated occupancy. However, in the null model, the site occupancy estimated was found to be 0.82±0.08 and with detection probability 0.23±0.03. The overall abundance of monal was estimated about 171.58 ±10.2 in the study area with an average density of 0.62/ km2. The activity pattern analysis indicates that monal remains very active between 6.00 hrs −12.00 hrs and relatively less active during mid-day when humans are most active 11.30 hrs-16.30 hrs. The present study is a first attempt to estimate occupancy and abundance using camera traps as well as sign survey for the species primarily from non-Protected Area (PA). We found that Himalayan monal is abundant outside the PAs, which is a good indication for its long-term viability and also identified areas for conservation and management prioritization in Uttarkashi.

Sloth bear populations in India are threatened, and the ecology and distribution of the species occurring in the region's protected areas are known, but there is no scientific basis underlying management strategies for sloth bear. We used bear indirect and opportunistic direct signs like feeding site, scats, foot print trails, claw marks on climbing trees, to study habitat use and distribution of sloth bear (Melurus ursinus) across Balaram Ambaji Wildlife Sanctuary and Danta Reserve Forest, Gujarat, India from April, 2010 to January 2011. We survey 40 grids (5 × 5 km) 3 km signs survey = 120 km × 3 = 360 km and total 766 bear signs were recorded, and for vegetation we surveyed 40 grids × 2 km vegetation transect = 80 km were sampled. A total of nine (9) vegetation types were recorded and the bear sign where crossed check with the vegetation forest type. Fruits appear to be a key resource for sloth bears, and factors affecting fruit abundance or seasonality will affect bear foraging as well as the humans to depend on such fruits as a food common resource. Knowledge of this relationship will allow managers to be more proactive in managing bears. We recommend using sign surveys for monitoring changes in sloth bear presence, as they are inexpensive, efficient, and can be conducted by trained rangers.

Cuvier, 1823) at designated area of Cisokan Hydropower, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20:  762-769. One of the endemic species of Indonesia is the Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica). Sunda porcupine is a big rodent which has unique defense mechanism behavior using its quills. This research was conducted in the designated area of Cisokan Hydropower (PLTA Cisokan), in West Java, Indonesia. The method in this study is qualitative to determine the total population and distribution. Data collection techniques were carried out by sign surveys (burrow, footprints, quills, food sites, and feces), camera traps, and semi-structured interviews. The result shows the number of porcupine populations in the designated area of Cisokan Hydropower is 6-29 individuals. Porcupine population is distributed in five regions, namely the first region consisting of Pasir Gagak, Cigintung, Batu Sahulu and Batu Nunggul; the second region is Batu Tumpeng and Batu Wulung; the third region is Curug Japarana; the fourth region consists of Sarongge and Cadas Gantung; and the fifth region is Pongpok. Based on the type of land cover, the porcupine population is commonly found in the types of shrub/huma /ladang, talun, and natural forests.

AbstractThe jaguar (Panthera onca) is widely distributed across a broad range of habitat types, where its feeding habits and habitat use patterns vary significantly. The jaguar and its main arboreal prey – the brown-throated sloth (Bradypus variegatus) and the red howler monkey (Alouatta juara) – are widespread in the Amazonian floodplain forests of the Mamirauá Reserve. These forest-dwelling species are the most common mammal species both in the continuous forest and the forest patches surrounded by a river matrix – the fluvial islands – of the Solimões and Japurá rivers. We used sign surveys along line-transects to assess the pattern of habitat occupancy by jaguars in Amazonian floodplain forests. Specifically, we (i) tested whether habitat occupancy by jaguars differs between river islands and continuous forest; and (ii) evaluated whether and how the local abundance of sloths and howler monkeys influence the probability of site occupancy by jaguars. We built an occupancy model and used Bayesian inference to reach these goals. The proportion of sites estimated to be used by jaguars was ψ = 0.75 (HPD95: 0.36–1.00), and it did not differ between islands and continuous forest. The abundance of both prey species had a direct influence on jaguar’s habitat use, whereas the aquatic matrix seems to have a negligible effect on the use of islands by jaguars. We conclude that the isolation of the river islands within the aquatic matrix does not hamper jaguars to use them. We also conclude that prey search modulates jaguars’ habitat occupancy patterns with both prey species having a similar effect. This finding is compatible with the previously reported importance of sloths to the diet of jaguars in the study region despite its lower abundance than howlers. Finally, we suggest that sign surveys are an alternative method to assess the pattern of jaguar habitat occupancy in floodplain forests.
