Coordinated intersection management (CIM) has gained more attention with the advance of connected and autonomous vehicle technology. The optimization of passing schedules and conflict separation between conflicting vehicles are usually conducted based on the predefined travelling paths through the intersection area in the CIM. In real-world implementation, however, the diversity of turn paths exists due to multiple factors such as various vehicle sizes and automation control algorithms. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the variation in left-turn paths affects the feasibility and viability of optimal passing schedules, as well as the safety and efficiency of intersection operation. To do this, we start with identifying six typical left-turn paths to represent the variation. A scenario-based simulation is first conducted by using each of the paths as the nominal path. The optimal schedules and the corresponding alternative schedules are generated to calculate indicators for nominal performance, average performance, and robustness. The best path is selected in terms of schedule optimality and robustness. With schedules obtained by solving CIM models using the selected path, the left-turning CAVs are assumed to travel along one of the six paths randomly to simulate the path divergence. A surrogate safety measure, PET, is utilized to assess the safety of the intersection under CIM. The theoretical PET with the nominal path and the actual PET with the random path are calculated for each conflict event. Comparisons of two PET sets show the increase in conflict risk and vehicle delay. The conclusion can be drawn that the variation in left-turn paths causes the decline in safety level and travelling efficiency and should be considered in the CIM model to ensure safe and efficient implementation in the intersection.

Genomic studies have been a major approach to elucidating disease etiology and to exploring potential targets for treatments of many complex diseases. Statistical analyses in these studies often face the challenges of multiplicity, weak signals, and the nature of dependence among genetic markers. This situation becomes even more complicated when multi-omics data are available. To integrate the data from different platforms, various integrative analyses have been adopted, ranging from the direct union or intersection operation on sets derived from different single-platform analysis to complex hierarchical multi-level models. The former ignores the biological relationship between molecules while the latter can be hard to interpret. We propose in this study an integrative approach that combines both single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and copy number variations (CNVs) in the same genomic unit to co-localize the concurrent effect and to deal with the sparsity due to rare variants. This approach is illustrated with simulation studies to evaluate its performance and is applied to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride measurements from Taiwan Biobank. The results show that the proposed method can more effectively detect the collective effect from both SNVs and CNVs compared to traditional methods. For the biobank analysis, the identified genetic regions including the gene VNN2 could be novel and deserve further investigation.

The position of the actual intersection points is determined by the graphs of the curves, but the imaginary intersection points do not lie on the graphs of these curves, and their position on the plane remains unclear. This work aims to determine the geometry of imaginary intersection points, introduces into consideration the concept of imaginary complement for these algebraic curves in the intersection operation, determines the form of imaginary complements, which intersect at imaginary points. The visualization of imaginary complements clarifies the curves intersection picture, and the position of the imaginary intersection points becomes expected.

Urban road intersection bottleneck has become an important factor in causing traffic delay and restricting traffic efficiency. It is essential to explore the prediction of the operating performance at intersections in real-time and formulate corresponding strategies to alleviate intersection delay. However, because of the sophisticated intersection traffic condition, it is difficult to capture the intersection traffic Spatio-temporal features by the traditional data and prediction methods. The development of big data technology and the deep learning model provides us a good chance to address this challenge. Therefore, this paper proposes a multi-task fusion deep learning (MFDL) model based on massive floating car data to effectively predict the passing time and speed at intersections over different estimation time granularity. Moreover, the grid model and the fuzzy C-means (FCM) clustering method are developed to identify the intersection area and derive a set of key Spatio-temporal traffic parameters from floating car data. In order to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model, the floating car data from ten intersections of Beijing with a sampling rate of 3s are adopted for the training and test process. The experiment result shows that the MFDL model enables us to capture the Spatio-temporal and topology feature of the traffic state efficiently. Compared with the traditional prediction method, the proposed model has the best prediction performance. The interplay between these two targeted prediction variables can significantly improve prediction accuracy and efficiency. Thereby, this method predicts the intersection operation performance in real-time and can provide valuable insights for traffic managers to improve the intersection’s operation efficiency.

The safety of at grade road intersections is a relevant issue with social, economic, and environmental implications. It is related to the behavior of a driver approaching an intersection that, in its turn, is affected by kinematic and physiological variables. This study proposes a model to calculate the intersection operation time (IOT) for typical non-signalized 4-leg and 3-leg (or T-leg) urban intersections. Data available in the literature have been considered in order to identify the points of interest and assess the number and the time of a driver’s eye fixation on them. When approaching an intersection, the probability of glancing in a particular area changes with the distance to the yield or stop line; for this reason, a probabilistic approach was used to model the phenomenon. All possible maneuvers have been considered: left turning, right turning, and through-movement. The proposed model allowed an objective comparison between time spent by drivers for various maneuvers and layout conditions, and identification of the critical conditions. Indeed, significant differences in terms of IOT were found: they could lead to modification of the traffic management considering different needs of road users, traffic demand, and geometrical and functional constraints.
