Fe/S clusters generated in situ from simple iron salts and sulfur S8 were found to be highly efficient to catalyze the decarboxylative redox condensation of arylacetic acids with nitroarenes in the presence of N-methylpiperidine as a basic additive.

In the study presented here, the three Russian basic additive and contrastive coordinating conjunctions i, a and no were compared to their two Norwegian counterparts og and men when used in utterance-initial position. By means of a direct comparison of sentences from Russian and Norwegian novels and their translations, both differences between the languages and language-internal boundaries between the conjunctions were made apparent. A core meaning was formulated for each of the five conjunctions. Their basic properties account not only for their use in general, but they can also explain certain specific qualities and conditions for pragmatic use in utterance-initial position.

CaCO3 (aragonite or calcite) with various unusual biomimetic morphologies, such as pumpkin-like, olive-like, willow-leaf-like, cauliflower-like, etc, have been successfully synthesized by one-step microwave-assisted method using CaCl2, (NH4)2CO3 or Na2CO3, basic additives (urea, hexamethylenetetramine ((CH2)6N4), ethylenediamine (C2H8N2) and NaOH), poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)) in polyol. The effects of reaction temperature, reaction time, and type of basic additive on the products were investigated. The reaction temperature and type of basic additive have significant effects on the morphology of CaCO3. This method is simple, fast, low-cost and may be scaled up for large-scale production of CaCO3 with various morphologies.

Two- or three-component catalysts composed of (i) sulfur or sulfur compound (H2S, CS2, COS, Na2S), (ii) basic additive (triethylamine, CH3ONa, Na2S), and usually (iii) vanadium(V) compounds (e.g. NH4VO3) were found to catalyze efficiently the reaction of CO + H2O with isomeric nitrophenols to give the corresponding aminophenols. The reaction proceeds smoothly at 398 and 483 K and initial pressure of 7 MPa, and its rate increases from 2- to 4-nitrophenol. The selectivity to aminophenols exceeding 96 per cent was obtained at the water to nitrophenol molar ratio higher than 5. The solvents such as methanol and dioxane ensured better contact of the reactants, which was necessary for achievement of such a high selectivity. The effectiveness of the sulfur components (based on the S content) is expressed by the following sequence: S : CS2 : Na2S : H2 S : COS = 1 : 1.2 : 2.5 : 10 : 11. The reaction takes place also under the reduced CO pressure to 0.1 - 0.35 MPa. Formation of side products and mechanism of the reaction are discussed.
